All the ports in the back are USB-C. So you will still need ALL your dongles to connect anything and everything.

Yes, but you will connecting them once and then leaving them there permanently (more or less). None of this rat's nest of cables people seem to be freaking out over.

I am not seeing the poor build quality.

I am looking at various unboxing videos on YouTube and the monitor looks gorgeous. You have a 5k display at less than half the price of what Dell used to sell. You get to connect everything over a single cable, which negates the majority of the "dongle-gate" criticism when working from your desk. But all people can complain about is that it lacks a glowing Apple logo on the back?

Honestly, it looks pretty decent. I'm not in the market for one, but I don't think it's the end of the world. Sure, an all aluminum enclosure be nicer.

It really doesn't seem too bad - decent clean design at least:

Nice touch with how the monitor slides up and down (fast forward to 1:57):

And what I think are subtle Apple touches:

Ugliest monitor I've seen in a long time-Apple clearly had no conversation with LG on the aesthetics. A shame cause the price is right and picture is outstanding.

Don't misunderstand my posts here. I actually think it's a really good monitor. Having just 1 cable to drive it, from a laptop is amazing. Yeah the looks are meh, but I guess i"m used to PC monitors and a huge step up from the previous Apple Mirror with an LCD almost half an inch behind it. Based on the reviews, looks like it's glossy, but there isn't a separate piece of glass apart from the panel itself.

Charging while using the monitor is amazing too. Brightness control, everything from software is awesome too. And all for 950 bucks, that's an incredible deal.

I'm just pissed that it ships 6-8 weeks. Macbook ships in Jan now. Either they are insanely popular and they can't keep up with demand, or Cook needs to go back to being a COO or hire someone who understands how to manage supply chain and inventory and/or hire someone that is a little better at forecasting sales.

If not for the shipping BS, I'd probably be all over it (and maybe still will be).

Come on, that's one case we don't need Apple's "courage". There is plenty of space on the display to add HDMI, mini-Displayport, USB hub and yes, a headphone jack. I am using a 45 inch 4K TV for half that price as a monitor and it rocks. Plus, I can connect a Roku to a spare port and watch TV from the couch when I am not busy working.

Has anyone connected the 4k display to their 2015 retina MacBook pro? I read that you can use a Thunderbolt 2 cable with an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and plug a 2015 MBP into the 4K version of this monitor.

I would love it if anyone can confirm that. (or debunk that if it's not true)

I'm also curious if the same connection (Thunderbolt 2 with adapter) would work on the 5K version of this monitor? I'm wondering if the 5K version is able to display lower resolutions than 5K, or if it only accepts a 5K signal.

I haven't tried the 4K, but I do have a 34" UW TB monitor connected via the adapter. Allows me an almost single cable solution - Everything except power via the TB2 cable and a USB3 Hub.

What cable management?

The uses you cite are't the only things someone would want to connect to their computer, or apple (LG) would not have put ports on the back of the display. There will be cables, and it does seem there might have been a better design to accommodate them. But I'm just looking forward to getting the displays.

BTW: As of roughly 8 pm EST today I was unable to order online; contacted the store via chat, and the chat-guy said, yeah, I see we sold some; no, they can't be ordered now. He is waiting to get two of them too so he was sympathetic.

H. Flower says: "Part of the reason I've paid Apple Tax was for amazingly designed products - sometimes works of industrial art that could truly inspire me. And to have something like this be the head of your setup is just..... i don't get it."

Sounds like an entrepreneurial opportunity: sell cheap aluminum frames to hang on the display.

just a question. Why is everyone ordering this monitor - meaning what is the end use? From what i can gather, it won't be ideal for critical calibration (no self calibration, only 14.7 million colors, doesn't say what % of Adobe RGB sRGB, etc). Is it just because it is 5K and 27 inch? Just seems a bit much for what it is.

What I want to know:

1.) Can you use this monitor with a non-Mac?

2.) Can you adjust the brightness using the brightness keys on the Apple keyboard when my laptop is in clamshell mode?

Why in the **** is the shipping time 6-8 weeks. I ****ing hate apple. This marks my damn blood boil

Chill! I'm glad they'll offer it soon, cause I ordered my maxed-13" MBP using the Barclay free financing offer, and other purchases can be aggregated with it to get the same free financing. I'm glad for them to take my order early, knowing it'll be a while before it's delivered.

But hey: Congrats for getting an order through. I think you're one of a lucky few. Are they letting the order stand?

I agree. The bezel on my ordered MBP with Touch Bar is black; I think the display's black surround will look better with that--dare I say more Apple-like?--than aluminum would.

"black is the new aluminium"

I just spoke with someone with Apple's support chat, and they claim that the monitor has not gone on sale in the US and will not until December. I've seen the monitors as unavailable since this article was posted, as well.

Because it was codeveloped with Apple. LG wouldn't have made anything like this if Apple weren't involved. I'm not talking about design, I'm talking about the panel, audio, USB-C only, camera, software integration, components, etc.

Then maybe the product logo should include both the "LG" and Apple symbols. Would that be a first in product branding?

Looks like we have the same setup. I too have a 13" MBP and plan on using this 5K as its external display.

I paid using PayPal Credit (no payments and interest for 6 mo). It still says Pending. That's kind of strange because it usually instantly deducts it from my PayPal Credit. I hope Apple didn't screw up and will cancel these orders. I'll let you know if this is the case.

I guess I can wait but still 6-8 weeks is insane. I guess it's not that bad because my new MBP will be here in 3-4 weeks. Before new year. I too used PayPal Credit to buy my MBP and the money was deducted instantly. TheL LG5K is still pending from Apple though..... =/

Probably a number of people here would like Cook to go back to COO and fire up the Steve AI for CEO. What could possibly go wrong...

@jclo - for the last two hours it appears not to be on sale anymore in any country. Might be useful to add an update to the article? :)
