Great, thanks. I got all excited to purchase TWO of these and the "Add to Bag" is dimmed out... What a tease!

@jclo - for the last two hours it appears not to be on sale anymore in any country. Might be useful to add an update to the article? :)
...and as if by magic! :D

just a question. Why is everyone ordering this monitor - meaning what is the end use? From what i can gather, it won't be ideal for critical calibration (no self calibration, only 14.7 million colors, doesn't say what % of Adobe RGB sRGB, etc). Is it just because it is 5K and 27 inch? Just seems a bit much for what it is.

It also had the P3 wide colour gamut of the new MBP and acts as a thunderbolt 3 docking station including power and 3 extra USB-C ports. Unlike the 4k display, the USB-C ports on this monitor run at full speed too.

It really is a bargain at the (reduced) price and contrary to some posters here, it looks like it is really nicely made. Yes the forehead isn't ideal but then again neither is mine!

I already have a 5k iMac and just today I got a 15" MBP + TB and I'm thinking of adding one of these monitors so that I can repurpose or sell my 5K iMac. That will simplify my workflow as I won't need to constantly keep work files in sync between iMac and MBP. Generally this is easy enough but for some things (git working folders mainly) it can be a pain.

I now have a little script monitoring the Apple website for changes to availability of this monitor - I just hope I'm awake when the email comes in... :)

If you work in open office space like I do, all other people around (including clients) just see the frame. Sure, for an isolated studio I wouldn't care what it looks like.

Spot on comment to why this monitor is a crap design. A row of TBdisplays or imacs look great - a row of these LG monitors will look like you operate HP machines from 5 years ago. Amazing.

Yep, I added an update. Sorry for the delay -- I couldn't tell if it was removed or if it was the same caching issue some people had been seeing. In the future, please feel free to shoot me an email if I'm slacking on an update or am missing crucial info. It's juli@macrumors.com.

Just wanted to say I always see your name on the articles, and thanks for the hard work and for making Macrumors so great. Wouldn't ever think you were slacking ;)

Not the worst looking display ever made, but ugly nonetheless, and projects bad design ethos for an Apple associated product.

Part of the reason I've paid Apple Tax was for amazingly designed products - sometimes works of industrial art that could truly inspire me. And to have something like this be the head of your setup is just..... i don't get it.

The LG UltraFine 5K Display was first introduced at Apple's October 27 Mac event alongside a matching 4K Display, but until today, the 5K Display has been available for purchase, with Apple listing a vague availability date of "December."

That bezel. That tiny base. WTF? Who is going to willingly put that on their desks? No thanks, bigger, faster, more beautiful panels are already available from other manufacturers and while 5K in such a small package is nice, it's wasted IMO unless you're a edge-of-your seat typist or something.

This line, one that has been repeated in other articles, is striking to me. Hard to see what is even remotely Apple like about this display. I'm sure it's an okay display, but it certainly doesn't seem to fit in with Apple's style. Disappointing really that this is "Apple's option".

jerry16, is it really hard for you to see what's remotely Apple-like about this display?

This is the first external 5K 27" monitor, which is same size and resolution as 5K 27" iMac. It connects over Thunderbolt 3, and has 3 USB-C outputs. Just like Thunderbolt display before it, it powers the MBP over a single video/data/power cable. It has no on-screen controls - you can control the brightness and speaker volume from your MacBook. It has a mic and camera for facetime calls.

It's basically a 5K Retina Thunderbolt display, except the visual design is not Apple's. But it behaves exactly like one.

This monitor makes it possible to have a laptop and a 27" external monitor with Retina display. Before, your only option to get Retina at 27" was buying an iMac.

I know it wasn't "designed" by Apple but if they are going to collaborate somehow, require some design. I don't this this display would make it into the new book out.

Because it was codeveloped with Apple. LG wouldn't have made anything like this if Apple weren't involved. I'm not talking about design, I'm talking about the panel, audio, USB-C only, camera, software integration, components, etc.
"Codeveloped" in what way? I think what you mean is "co-marketed."
If you could please point out which parts of this panel are Apple-developed, I would appreciate it.

Jesus, who the hell cares that the top is a slight bit larger than the bottom/sides. The camera is at the top.

It's a 5K that has one cable convenience for my new MacBook Pro, and has the exact same brightness/color depth as my new Mac. Seems like a winner to me.

But it won't work at 5K with a Mac Pro, right?

I love owning practical products even more. Perhaps you could get your vanity checked out?

It's not that difficult to make a monitor that isn't fugly like this one. And design aesthetics are important to people , even if you think it's vain.

That top eye brow cannot be unseen

Mono-brow

I realise there's a camera up there, but what's with that large forehead?

It's a five head.

Not such a nice price when you consider that in order to use it you have to also buy a new computer with Thunderbolt 3.
You may be stunned to learn there are people on macrumors who already own or intend to buy just such a machine!

Perhaps some of those people are amongst us here on this thread...

Tiny base? It's no smaller than an iMac base, and from video reviews looks very stable.

Bigger, faster, more beautiful - 27" is spot on for retina 5k, not sure what you mean by faster (response? speed of light???) and beauty is subjective.

As for 5k being wasted in a 27" display, try telling that to a retina iMac owner and we'll tell you you're wrong. Oh, I just did! :p

Id rather buy a 55" samsung ks8000 for the same price

But does that price include the required sofa to sit on while using it? :D

Seriously though, I hope I don't need to point out that a 55" 4K TV is not the same as a 27" 5K computer monitor.

Also, I'd love to hear where you can buy a 55" KS8000 for the same price as the LG 5K.

The richest company in the world but they can't find the resources or find it important to update their iconic desktop screens?

Before: a beautiful screen that draws the attention to their brand in any office or hotel lobby.

Now: a generic screen from the nineties PC era.

Soon: the end of Mac mini and Mac Pro.
