It's not that difficult to make a monitor that isn't fugly like this one. And design aesthetics are important to people , even if you think it's vain.

You guys have bigger problems than worrying about Apple and aesthetics, why are you even complaining about them when their products largely suck? Where's the 144hz refresh rate on that monitor?? Why is there no HDMI or Displayport connector? Apparently looks are more important than it being technically gimped?

Please explain why a TOOL needs to look pretty before fulfilling it's basic function.

Can someone please tell me if this monitor will work with a 2015 iMac 5K? I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere. Thanks in advance!
95% sure it's a no.

This monitor is hideous and honestly I lost faith Apple will bring an Apple display now. Unless Apple surprise us in the next 6 months with a MacPro upgrade. it look quite obvious they are dropping the desktops and maybe only sticking with the iMac. We'll see. Sad times.
They have announced not in monitor business.

$1000 for that ugly, overpriced monitor with poor build quality. Get Tim out of there.
5k display, coupled with a $1500-$2000 laptop, is about what you'd expect for a high-end 5k computer. This combination, though, has Apple backing and portability (laptop at least).

"Ugly" to those how care about looks over performance....

LG: "We've got this fantastic monitor. It has USB-C, HDMI, display port inputs. Look, some USB3 sockets so you can plug in your existing gear, and a few USB-C ones too. Round the side here, there are buttons for the menu system, brightness, contrast, etc. Also, an SD card slot, Ethernet port for pure convenience. So, just plug one cable into your computer, and this monitor will be a great hub that'll work with any computer now and in the future. What do you think, Tim?"

Tim: "Get rid of it all. USB-C Thunderbolt only, no buttons. Next!".
I started to feel all excited, a monitor with all those things and then the realism sets in and it was just your imaginary product. Oh well, I can always wish.

Why they did not put the LG technology in an Apple panel (with a look in line with the new mac book pro, with the same colors choice, same finish ... ) is beyond my understanding. No more ideas Apple?

Maybe the product logo should include both the "LG" and Apple symbols. Would that be a first in product branding?
Right, but then they would have to offer three years of AppleCare. Whereas the LG Ultrafine monitors only have a two-year warrantee, which is non-transferable! So, good luck if you want to sell yours, or if it fails in month 25.

The product doesn't work any worse without the Apple logo. It's not something I will be losing sleep over.
No Apple logo = No AppleCare or support obligations. Not good. Especially if you have a screen problem, and don't know if it's the MBp/Tb3 or Lg/Uf/5k (for example).

Who said that? Certainly not me.

I agree with those who say it can and should be both technically advanced with at least some attempt at a design aesthetic.

I want form AND function, and it's not that difficult.

You may be stunned to learn there are people on macrumors who already own or intend to buy just such a machine!

Perhaps some of those people are amongst us here on this thread...

Tiny base? It's no smaller than an iMac base, and from video reviews looks very stable.

Bigger, faster, more beautiful - 27" is spot on for retina 5k, not sure what you mean by faster (response? speed of light???) and beauty is subjective.

As for 5k being wasted in a 27" display, try telling that to a retina iMac owner and we'll tell you you're wrong. Oh, I just did! :p

But does that price include the required sofa to sit on while using it? :D

Seriously though, I hope I don't need to point out that a 55" 4K TV is not the same as a 27" 5K computer monitor.

Also, I'd love to hear where you can buy a 55" KS8000 for the same price as the LG 5K.
i know its not the same but still.
you can buy a 55" from samsung or best buy for $999 right now

That's a lovely 5K TV...

Oh wait.

(from someone who has the 65" KS8000)
ya ya. you won't be able to tell the difference between a 4k and 5k screen anyway :p
I have a 65" ks9000 hehe

Not such a nice price when you consider that in order to use it you have to also buy a new computer with Thunderbolt 3.
Do we know if the Lg/Uf/5k will work with ANY other PCs sporting TB3 ports? Or is there some unique Apple/SST circuitry involved that would make that impossible? So this monitor will only work with one machine (currently). No Windows devices, no secondary market, and limited resale value without a transferable warrantee.

Indeed it's like something that came out of Dell in 2002. Look at that hydrocephalic top bezel -camera or not, the whole thing is unsightly. And I thought LG was pioneering ultrawide and/or bezel-less designs in their other display offerings. Buying Apple used to mean buying an entire aesthetic. I hope Apple returns to the standalone display business, if Jony (re)tires of making christmas trees and books.

Agreed. I mean look at their oled tv's they are beautiful. This...not so much

I gotta admit this kind of rings true, if only because, subliminally, you can see the word “ugly” in there.

hydrocephalic

Okay, that cracked me up.

Because it’s an Apple tool. If you don’t care how it looks, why aren’t you using a PC?

To all the people saying the LG Ultrafine is ugly, have you seen/touched one in person? I'll admit that I was a little apprehensive when I saw the design, but I went for the 4K due to the USB-C connectivity. it is a very nice piece of hardware, and looks and feels like a premium product. Really happy with it.
