It's ugly because it's LG.Nice price for a panel of that size and quality. Why they had to make it so ugly is beyond me.
All LG minitors look ugly and cheap.

You're not looking at it right. It's ugly because it's LG.
All LG minitors look ugly and cheap.
Those people which the panel is made for. Read: people that are working in the aesthetics sector - graphic designers, movie makers, 3D designers ... love to have an 'aesthetic' screen. What you're saying is that what they are doing has no value at all. While all of you are complaining about the most ridiculous non-issue (aesthetics), I'm sitting here waiting for a proper 24" IPS panel @ 144hz.
The feature here is color-accuracy. For example the Eizo ColorEdge 32" 4K screen, covers 99% of RGB (a wider gamut than P3) and costs $5,739. This baby is a bargain (but ugly).Isn't this still expensive considering it's size/features? I would expect a display this big to be somewhere around $500-$600 max.
Good point. Only Apple would have the courage to say "screw you" to current-model 5K iMac and Mac Pro owners.Because it was codeveloped with Apple. LG wouldn't have made anything like this if Apple weren't involved. I'm not talking about design, I'm talking about the panel, audio, USB-C only, camera, software integration, components, etc.

$1000 for that ugly, overpriced monitor with poor build quality. Get Tim out of there.
It's a 5k screen - there aren't really enough 5k screens on the market to make a comparison, mainly just the iMac (which has a computer thrown in) and Dell's 5k display (which launched for about $1500 list price but has been on sale for somewhat less) and maybe one or two others.
In the UK, the Dell 5k display seems to be going for about the same price ~ £900 ($1 ~ £1 at the moment once you allow for tax) & there's a HP 5k display at over £1300 - neither of those has Thunderbolt (they use 2xDisplayPort connections) so the LG price actually seems pretty reasonable with the discount.
No, the only things obviously wrong with this display are (1) the debatable aesthetics, (2) the ridiculously restrictive connectivity (no DP/HDMI in, no USB-A despite plenty of room) and (3) its continued non-availability.
Anyone get the feeling 2016 will be remembered as the year the world figured out that Apple no longer had its **** together?
A product goes on sale, and then hours later, stops being sold? What is this nonsense?
It's one mess after another. One underwhelming product launch after another. And meanwhile, old competitors are doing interesting and exciting things.
The gap is closing Tim. This is exactly what happened in the late 80s and early 90s. It takes awhile, and out of the blue the world will change and Apple will no longer be relevant again. I hope this doesn't happen, but it's clear Apple leadership is getting left behind.

How is Samsung supposed to produce something that looks nicer, when there is nothing to copy?It would be nice if Apple worked with Samsung on some Thunderbolt 3 displays too. (Not that I can see this ever happening). The functionality of this display looks good, but as other people have already stated - this thing is UGLY!!
Because it’s an Apple tool. If you don’t care how it looks, why aren’t you using a PC?

On MacRumors, people only see the frame. In the real world, it displays a picture and nobody looks at the frame. If you work in open office space like I do, all other people around (including clients) just see the frame. Sure, for an isolated studio I wouldn't care what it looks like.
Don't forget the AirPod vaporware.Anyone get the feeling 2016 will be remembered as the year the world figured out that Apple no longer had its **** together?

Dream on. This is a 5K monitor. Anything under $1,000 is cheap. You'd be lucky to get 4K for $500-$600.
Maybe I am naïve, but you see bigger 4K screens for like $300. Wouldn't this just be a marginal improvement?

You may be stunned to learn there are people on macrumors who already own or intend to buy just such a machine!
Perhaps some of those people are amongst us here on this thread...

Tiny base? It's no smaller than an iMac base, and from video reviews looks very stable.
Bigger, faster, more beautiful - 27" is spot on for retina 5k, not sure what you mean by faster (response? speed of light???) and beauty is subjective.
As for 5k being wasted in a 27" display, try telling that to a retina iMac owner and we'll tell you you're wrong. Oh, I just did!![]()
