No different than this garbage "flat" and "modern" design. Screams that designers have no talent.

You're incredibly misinformed about design and the amount of work that goes into composition, typography, and intent.

In Marc Newson I trust...or not.

This design was an obvious challenge to innovation. He designed this as a statement towards the other automotive designers that their cookie-cutter/collage take on automotive design is flawed. I think this is brilliant only for it's break in habitual design.

He's right. Now let's see what he can come up with.

I seriously appreciate your comment. You're one of the few on this thread who has challenged, rather than mocked, two incredibly respectable designers. You deserve somebody to buy you lunch.

Marc Newson's design is awfully familiar...

Based on the Apple Watch, we can expect the Apple Car to be as every bit as innovative and aesthetic as the Trabant.

It absolutely looks similar if you blindfolded me and fed me the two photos. Are you nearsighted? Look at the details.

I also think car designers are lazy. I picked up a 2016 Mazda6 a month ago and I do enjoy it. However, look at the rear ends of some cars and SUVs. They all look very similar. Just lazy. I don't know what's wrong with Toyota to add a big plastic open mouth at the bottom of their Corolla and Camry.

Problem is whenever someone does a unique rear end everyone criticizes it until they replace it with a more conventional rear. The camaro is a great example. Above I pointed out the pretty unique rear it had at one point. Here's what it has now (and it gets worse every refresh!)

Though admittedly even the new one is still pretty decent.

Then again, the tail of an SRT8 charger looks pretty fantastic too.

Oh yeah, gotta give the mustang honorable mention:

To be fair, all of those are either fairly expensive or nonconventional cars. The 300 and charger are about as close to a mundane midsize as you get before things start to get depressing.

If you look at a dart, they softened and cheapened it up to Corolla standards. It's still better, but not by much

Even that is better though.

I think the problem is you're looking at boring cars XD

Too right! Ive may be right that car design has generally become pretty pathetic, but given where he's taken iOS and OSX design, he has no business gripping about the design of anything. "Flat" may be perfectly nice for smartphone and laptop case designs, but is a hideous disaster for user interface look & feel. Skeuomorphic and 3D look & feel can't come back fast enough. Maybe there is some logic by which it makes sense for Apple to get in the car business, but if they're doing it because Ive is a 'design genius' of all things, they are headed for disaster - he's a really good computer & phone case designer...

Meanwhile, back in the computer business, where the &%*$ is the 4K Thunderbolt Display, AppleTV app store, Homekit, TB connected graphics cards in OSX, updated MacPro, XServe replacement, etc.?? Apple needs to get some of it's core business back in focus before playing in unrelated industries.

You have somewhat of a point with the Mustang in regard to the parts of the current design that are reminiscent of Mustangs from the time when Mustangs were cool. As far as styling goes, the rest are just 'meh' at best. Except the Cadillacs. Those are flat out 'barf'!
Automotive technology, engineering, and manufacturing have made impressive strides. Automotive styling has, with very few exceptions, gone down the toilet.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but that's a good thing - at least it actually has some design.

Just googled the Toyota Echo, I've couldn't have been more right about that thing, or modern cars in general. "Nothing" and "insipid" - spot on. Even the modern Aston's suffer from it - they look so similar to modern Ferraris, Bentleys and (obviously) Jaguars, not to mention the sports cars knocked out by the normal car makers.

To be fair. You need to have two tail lights and blinkers and doesn't really leave much room for a different look when you add in the trunk.
Don't forget the 5-mile per hour bumper, they're pretty cookie-cutter.

OMG. You beat me to the punch. Newson, like everyone else, can have an opinion about car design. But when you design the Ford 021C, you don't have a lot of room to talk about design. Although from 1999, this thing looks like something a 6 year old drew with crayons. I personally think he's wrong about today's automotive design. There are numerous beautifully designed cars on the road today.

Haven't you been taught anything about what good design is, from buying Apple products?

Johnny, you have been in costumer electronics for most of your career. Automotive design is "the big leagues" compared to the work you have done.

While your reputation gives clout for your opinion, let's see some product design to back it up. If not, this is just anyones opinion over pints at the local pub.

Designing a single consumer item is child's play compare to developing an entire moving environment where you have a very tough job mixing aesthetics and functionality.

"Apple’s Industrial Design Group includes Julian Hönig a former car designer with Lamborghini and Audi. At Audi, he designed the exteriors of the Audi Q3 crossover, the Audi A4 Avant and the Audi A4 Limousine. Hönig joined Apple in 2010, and is named in 118 patents awarded to Apple, according to a patent database search."

Hope Apple is working into NextGen FAA's blanket GPS system due by '25 and moving style of "brick and rubber" autos to aerial platforms - integrating phones into navigation - rival consumer-level and elite control level devices will make for interesting contests, nice rides to auto museums where we can see Graham Bell's early phone juxtaposed with 2024 Aston Martin relic.

The Wall Street Journal has published an in-depth profile of industrial designer Marc Newson, a longtime friend of Apple design chief Jonathan Ive who joined the Cupertino-based company in September 2014. The interview touches upon a number of topics, ranging from Newson's creative process and design philosophies to his favorite artists and fashion designers.

Just months after reports claimed Apple is actively researching and developing an electric and possibly self-driving vehicle, Newson added fuel to those rumors by referring to the automotive industry as one of his design pet-peeves. The designer said that while cars used to encapsulate "everything that was good about progress," the industry is now "at the bottom of a trough."Newson's comments certainly do not imply that Apple is working on a vehicle, but it is clear that multiple executives at the Cupertino-based company are car enthusiasts. Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue joined Ferrari's Board of Directors in November 2012, while Ive has owned several luxury vehicles ranging from Aston Martins and Fiats to Bentleys and Land Rovers.

The New Yorker also reflected on how Newson and Ive are "car guys" in February:It was reported in February that Apple has hundreds of employees, including former Tesla, Ford and GM engineers, working on an electric vehicle at a top-secret research lab possibly located in the Sunnyvale area. The much-rumored initiative, known internally as "Project Titan," likely remains in the early stages of research and development, with Bloomberg reporting that Apple hopes to begin production in 2020.

The Echo was a pretty ugly car... narrow and tall...

But nothing matches the ugliness of the Pontiac Asstek.
