For the same reason a 3G iPad is not an iPhone. It doesn't include Phone.app and doesn't require a phone contract.

People who buy iPod Touches use them as pocket computers. It isn't surprising they'd like to have network access everywhere instead of just wifi. That's already a reality with the iPad, and it makes sense that they would make other devices work with those same pay as you go data plans.

So this is just iPhone without the phone.app. Do you know how much iPhone costs without AT&T?

Exactly. The iPod Touch 3G would actually be the same exact price as the iPad 3G.

I don't see it happening.

Also because a) it might well infringe on the exclusivity contracts even if it *doesn't* have phone.app and isn't called a Phone, or certainly there will be massive friction about it and b) in markets where there is no exclusivity contract, it is already perfectly possible to buy an unlocked iPhone 4, at those prices, and shove a data-only microSIM in it.

The problem is ATT won't let it on the network without a voice plan. I've been asking them over and over. I'd buy an iphone at cost with an ipad data plan. They say NO in no uncertain terms. I think they are afraid I'll use voip with it (which I have no intention of doing).

This would not be helped by an iPT 3G.

NO. They call it a nano because of its size. Its much smaller then the mini, the player it replaced.

and it still could be the shuffle. It would either

  • Need a tacktile screen. Meaning you press down on the screen
  • Buttons on the side.

My original point was why it will be labeled with the "nano" moniker versus "shuffle". Of course it's called that nano because it's smaller. Also, it doesn't need a tactile screen because it will use an inline remote control and possibly include voice activation features like the iPhone. Also, tactile button-type screens usually only have a uni-directional click. For a tactile nano screen to be useful like you describe, it would have to be 4-way. I'm not sure the mechanics would be reliable and cost effective enough for a small, low cost device such as this. From the leaked cases, it looks like it may have dedicated volume buttons on the device too.

If the new iPodTouch has two cameras and FaceTime, it will be very disruptive. First, it will be the beginning of the end of point and shoot digital camera. Second, it will be the beginning of the end of the cell phones.

The unsubsidized iPhone 4 in the United States is $599 for the 16GB model, although it is still carrier locked to AT&T. Unlocked unsubsidized iPhones are sold elsewhere in the world, typically at higher prices.

Any chance of a Iphone software update?
Tomorrow? Chances are slender. Apple has not released an iOS 4.1 beta to developers for a while.

If the new iPodTouch has two cameras and FaceTime, it will be very disruptive ... it will be the beginning of the end of the cell phones.
No, FaceTime only works over WiFi. An iPod touch with 3G data would be very interesting, especially if it had a month-by-month data plan like the iPad 3G.

Cell phones aren't going anywhere - neither are land lines. The internet is not a reliable way to make phone calls, especially not mobile ones. Probably never will be.

I haven't scanned all of the posts, but it seems like few are mentioning the announcement of iOS4 for the iPad. I'd really appreciate that update as soon as possible!!!
I'm pretty sure Apple told iPad developers at WWDC in June that iOS 4 would be released to iPads in November.

Note that Apple hasn't seeded a single iOS 4 beta to iPad developers. iOS 4 is not coming to the iPad tomorrow.

I want new Mac Pro's with USB 3.0, Lightpeak, Blu-ray, and lower base prices - ooops, wait...

iTunes is inevitable

iTunes is most definitely getting an upgrade. It is inevitable. Why? I usually stay up until past midnight to check out the new music. The entire iTunes was not updated to show new music on the front page and in the genre page. The new music is in fact listed in the top album releases but not on the front pages where they always seen changes every Tuesday.

iTunes is no doubt getting updated. Pissed me off when I couldn't see much of any new music except mainstream junk.

AppleTV with app support = threat to Wii? Granted with the right controller.

I don't believe the Touch 3G will have Text Messaging either.

iPods are a given,

so my only wish is:
AppleTV
1080p
External drive support

I hope so but not holding my breath.

Music adds to my productivity. Distractions, including the Internet and applications, subtract from it. I'll get any iPod that's nano-sized or smaller with 32GB of storage... as long as there's no apps included. If there are, it will be no sale or I'll go to the old nano.

Yes! I'm not the only one!

I noticed that the iTunes music store hasn't been updated for the new releases today. That usually means (if I am remembering correctly) that an update to iTunes is coming.

Of course! THAT'S why that is. That makes perfect sense; I remember that happening once iTunes 8 or 9 came out.

My prediction, based on a guess is that the new iLife app will allow you view or "play" iLife files on yuor IOS device. That means videos you make in iMovie and songs you make in Garage band, Slide shows of you photos and all the other content can be stuffed into an IOS app you can put on your phone. I doubt it will create a true iPhone app. There will be a player app that plays some kind of packaged file iLife will have some way to bind the file to a generic player and end result will look to the iPhone user like a self playing media file, very limited new class of app that you can create in iLife 11.

Of course they would say that. But why are you bothering even asking them? I use an iPhone with the iPad data plan right now. And yes, I'm using Skype and SIPphone for voice.
