I should have said to name one that someone actually cares about. And this runs on the Xoom?

What store do I go to if I want to buy the Playbook or HP TouchPad? Oh, they don't freaking exist.

alot of college and highschool kids use bbm. main reason i want a bb. still its rumored that rim is going to take bbm cross platform.

You realize that everything you are saying is opinion, right?

Have you seen or tried a Xoom? It looks pretty much the same as the iPad except for the aspect ratio. Most people THINK it's an iPad when they see it. It's battery life is similar to the iPad. It doesn't run hot. As for the interface, it's cooler than OS4 after getting used to it. Try it. It runs smoothly, in the store at least. Apps will be written to take advantage of the increased speed and memory. My iPad stutters with higher texture 3D games even right now, let only more advances game being developed for higher processor devices.

The specs DO matter in REAL terms. The core market for tablets is STILL techies.

Tony

Agreed. Apps are limited to the hardware currently. This is where I feel Apple messed up. Honeycomb is something new, not just a mobile OS ported to a tablet like IOS is. I'm sadly probably defecting to a Honeycomb tablet. The apps that will be coming are going to really have potential to outdo anything on the iPad. Unless IOS 5 brings an iPad version that tempts me to wait it out longer.

Because part of the user experience is novelty. "Newness" is a tangible feature. Also, while technical specs may be invisible to the average user, new features such as FaceTime and more storage are visible and necessary to stay competitive.

An iPad will be NEW to whoever buys it, regardless if it's an iPad 1 or iPad 2. The general public would keep buying iPad 1 if they didn't know about iPad 2 - most don't even know there is an event tomorrow to announce a new iPad. To them, Apple = good enough, regardless of the tech specs.

That's Apple's problem. There isn't a newness factor. Similar to what I said above, Honeycomb looks and feels different than Android on a phone. How many people have posted since iPhone 4 came out that they don't feel like they got a new phone because its well... kind of the same. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, an iPad really lacks a newness different factor except for screen size. My Mac feels different than my iPhone, and I like that. Some people don't care, many do. Face Time on the iPad is a welcome feature, but can't call it new. And it's not a feature that people have been using in droves as it is now. I think Apple has gotten a bit complacent with design over the past 5 years or so. I love my uni-body iMac, but outside of going from plastic to metal and a white apple to a black apple, not really different.

When the iPad came out, it was the only thing out there. A touch tablet was a "new" "hot" thing, but now there is competition. With iPad one no one needed to care about the specs. There was nothing comparable, but now there is. It's like buying a car, or an appliance, or a desktop. Our society has become one that with a few key stroke in Google can compare features. If the Xoom, iPad, and say Toshiba's soon to be tablet all came out at the same time, do you think the iPad would have sold as well? Not everyone who bought it bought it people they're Apple fans. It was new. Now it's not new. Now there's choice. And If you're dropping $500-$800 on some tech, most people will try to future proof their purchase with specs to make it last longer. I'm an Apple fan boy, and I'm probably going Honeycomb.

Not sure it would even be legal for them to have all your music on the cloud (did you really buy it or copy it) and hard pressed to believe even apple has the resources to put every customers entire collection in cloud. More likely you can stream from a home computer over the web.

They don't really need to store that much... definitely not "everyone's" entire collection. Just one instance of each song. Then make it appear to each user that it is in their "folder" but really the millions that own each song would just need it stored one time not millions of times.

I think it seems obvious that the cloud should do this, as it wouldn't require any more space than it already does to have each song they sell. Think about when they sell the music, their servers have one copy of each song, and yet millions can buy each song.

I don't know about storing "your" external non-itunes music, but once you have it what is the difference? What could even happen for uploading your own music is it could identify the song immediately without even actually uploading it. It could identify that the song is indeed on your computer without DMCA protection or that you have the right to that song and it's yours... that is the way I see it. Apple owns the music industry right now, so I cannot see them losing the battle if that is what they want to do and why wouldn't they?

Additionally, I think it is stupid that to own an iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, that you need a computer at all. The whole point of the iPad for many is to eliminate their old style computer or netbook with it. Why not eliminate the need for connectivity to computers at all for all iOS devices? Seems like the future to me. Don't require any iOS product to have the system requirements of anything at all, and begin to dominate by allowing each device its own connectivity to the cloud for mass storage whether real or virtual and etc.

Here are some closeup pics of the mockup I hadn't seen before...they claim to be shot 15 hours ago. Found on Flickr.

I completely agree with you, but it seems like something about iPad 2 will be a bit disappointing, who knows. Maybe it's just that they couldn't secure enough retina-type displays, and iPhone 5 production would be threatened in June.

alot of college and highschool kids use bbm. main reason i want a bb. still its rumored that rim is going to take bbm cross platform.

So, it isn't cross platform, doesn't run on anything but a BB device and this is your killer app? How many years until you get to high school?

Now, where do I buy the playbook?

Bto

i feel that apple will announce the iPad 2 that will be a smallish update tomorrow at expected costs and say that in due to production constraints for those who want one a retina iPad will be available in June for $150 more. Those who want to wait can and those who dont care will get an ipad that is available tomorrow with camera, speed bump etc

Close - I think we'll see a dual core iPad with 1 gig of ram with a retina display being a bto option for an extra $$$ - available in 90 days - with preorders to start march 15th.

Retina on a 512 Meg iPad would leave it too memory constrained (opinion).

I believe that Apple will offer a hybrid system:

1) iTunes purchases available from anywhere to any Mac or iOS device without local storage necessary.

  • This would satisfy the labels and studios because it wouldn't allow users to potentially benefit from improving the use of pirated material
  • It would fortify Apple's position in media sales because it would encourage people to buy from iTunes
  • iTunes sales would increase exponentially, justifying offering Me.com for free
  • This system would eliminate the need for Apple's responsibility for upload bandwidth, only streaming downloads from items that are already stored on iTunes servers

2) Other non-iTunes media would still be stored locally on a Mac or PC in iTunes' database but Me.com would facilitate streaming from your iTunes to any other Mac or iOS device.

I think this system would satisfy most people:

  • You get to have access to all your media -- iTunes and non-iTunes -- on all your devices anywhere you are.
  • iTunes content staying on the server means no need to manage large file libraries (option to download to your HDD if you wish)
  • Free Me.com

The only compromise is that non-iTunes content would mean that you have to have iTunes running at home. I think this is a fair compromise. Maybe you can pay for server space to upload your non-iTunes content but perhaps it's better to just purchase your content on iTunes instead.
I agree.

A hybrid system with three level, tiered pricing.

Level 1) a modest $50 - limited

Level 2) a bit more revenue for Apple $100 - most services

Level 3) exclusivity for the user & bragging rights for Apple $150 - full service all included.

duuuuuudde...

i didn't think of that AT ALL. that would suck, because i'm pretty sure i'd have to wait for that if they announced that tomorrow. i don't think i could handle buying one of the lower-tiered ones (if this is what they're truly planning on, i know you're guessing), knowing that an incredible one is coming in a month to three months or whatever. yeeeesh i really really hope that isn't the case.

i'd rather them not even say anything about retina if they're doin somethin like that..just so i'm blind and won't know better about when it'll actually come out..

Last minute iPad predictions...

I'm going to reiterate what some people have said here. Apple would not be calling a press conference for a spec bump. Just last week, they updated Apple's most important Mac lineup on Apple.com exactly because they were spec bumps. Important technology such as as Thunderbolt was introduced and it still didn't merit a press conference. What Apple will introduce tomorrow is an all new iPad.

I'm placing my bets on Apple borrowing technology from MacBookAir in an all new redesigned iPad. I anticipate blade SSD's that'll allow a significant jump in storage -- up to 256GB on the higher end.

A 300+ dpi (retina) display is unlikely this early but I expect improvements in contrast and brightness, as well as antireflective properties to better place iPad in the heating competition with eReaders.

This hasn't been speculated or talked about much but I'm going to predict Thunderbolt support. Apple's going to want to push the standard into the mainstream and there's no better platform to do so than on iPad. I won't go as far as to say that the dock connector will be gone, but either a Thunderbolt port will be introduced alongside the dock connector or support will be built into the dock connector itself. A dock to Thunderbolt cable will be included. No other Apple device will benefit more from a 10Gbps transfer rate than iPad.

Processor and memory spec jumps are a foregone conclusions. Incremental updates to A5 and at lease 512MB are most likely.

Improved sound won't come at the expense of design. I don't expect a speaker at the back. Placement on the back is actually worse than on the bottom. Sound should travel towards the user, not away from them.

Finally, a theme that'll drive new iOS features will be "more autonomy". Users will rely less --- or not at all -- on a Mac or PC to use their iPad. The MobileMe cloud will have a lot to do with that. Entire iTunes and and iPhoto libraries will be run directly from iPad without the need for a Mac.

An SD card slot would appear likely under this scenario. Allowing users to add photos without the need for an adapter is an important feature if Apple wants people to use their iPads as their photo management device.

I know some of these are a long shot but I have reasoning for the introduction of each of them. Now we wait. See you all tomorrow :)

Why Not Buy Each New Model For $100 Each Time?

Apple will announce iPad 2 tomorrow? I had no idea. Lame that we will have to wait for iPad 3 for double resolution display. Oh well.
IPad 2 will be great I will buy it. IPad 3 will be greater, and I will
Buy that too.
Me too. What I don't understand is why anyone would wait for version 2 or 3 etc when the cost of selling the last one and buying the next one will amount to about $100 each time. :confused:

I'm confident a dual core A5 running @ 1GHz will be more than a small upgrade. I also think capacity will be doubled to 128 GB at the top. Those two things alone will make the iPad 2 rock way more than the one we've been using to date. :D

the third generation, ipad, my god, who is the guy kidding!
please.

so we get a modest bump up and a camera, and then have to wait a year for the next incarnation.

but that's what we, the american consuming public does best, right?

We continue to wait and buy and wait and buy......and on and on it goes.

Meanwhile back in china, millions of people, including underage children are paid peanuts, are infected by an assortment of contaminative chemicals that make them sick sometimes for life, then they're bought off by god knows who not to talk, and all for the love of Apple.

Yea, lets make sure we don't talk about this hideous aspect of their business
ensuring nothing ever changes and they keep buying their products with our eyes wide shut!'

It's really kinda disgusting!

Not to minimize the point you're making, because I agree in many respects, but outsourcing to China is not a tactic employed solely by Apple.

i've been thinking of getting the 32GB wifi version. if they up the ante on the memory to 32/64/128, i may reconsider, but really, i don't see why someone would need all that space for the ipad?

i have an ipod touch for all my music. i don't plan on putting a lot of music at all on the ipad really, and i don't think apps will take up a ton of space. i don't use a lot of photos on it either. so do most people who want the bigger space just want it for their music and everything else? or is there something i'm missing?

iPad Eve Poem

'Twas the night before iPad, when all through Jackling House

Not an iDevice was stirring, not even a multi-touch mouse;

The banners were hung on Yurba Buena Center with care,

In hopes that St. Jobs soon would be there;

The children were nestled in black turtle-neck threads,

While visions of FaceTime danced in their heads;

And mamma by her Macbook, and I near my Pro,

Had just settled down for a HD photo,

When up on Macrumors.com I sensed such a clatter,

I sprang from the Launchpad to see what was the matter.

A new Safari window open, I flew like a flash,

Searching for news, scouring through iTrash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen tech

The glow of the Apple, much like a sunset.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a Mercedes SL55, and my eye glints a tear.

With a little old driver, so lively and boss,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Jobs.

More rapid than Thunderbolt, his Geniuses they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Schiller! now, Ives! now, Cook and Forstall!

On, Sewell ! on Williams! on, Mansfield and Johnson!

To the top of the stage! to the top of the screen!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away clean!"

As dry Droids that before the wild Blackberry fly,

Who when they met with an obstacle, just stared to the sky,

So up to the press the Geniuses they flew,

With the Fedex trucks full of iToys, and Steven-Paul too.

And then, while in iTunes, I heard in advance

The dancing and chanting, of all Apple fans!

As I flicked through my iPhone, and was multi-tasking background,

Down the aisle St. Jobs came with a bound.

He was dressed in blue jeans, from his waist to his foot,

And his eyes were filled with such a joyous look;

A bundle of rumors he had carried on his back,

he looked like a madman never looking back.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His desktop immaculate, iTunes so varied!

His scroll was inertial,patents drawn up like pros,

And TimeCapsule so thin ,as white as the snow;

Terabytes and more, forever space to grow.

And the rumors encirlced every young mans dream;

An iPad with dual-cameras, large speaker, and Retina screen!

Could there be more from MobileMe?

Who knows? Perhaps it may even be FREE!

Old tech in the past was bulky and slow.

But our eyes back then thought it was a show!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke many words, and went straight to presentation,

And filled all the blogs; who then turned to temptation,

And laying his finger aside of touch screen,

And giving a wonderful iGleam, up the marketshare rose;

as the joyous conference came to a close.

And away they all worked for the next iDelight.

and I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,

"Happy iPads to all, and to all a good-night."

Apple would not be calling a press conference for a spec bump.

Most iPod Touch updates are spec bumps, as was the iPhone 3GS, yet they still had special events. I think we're just going to see other things in addition to the iPad that as a whole are worth an event.

I'm Buying What's New Every Time

I'm guessing we will see the following:

iPad 2

Revised thinner case
Upgraded RAM and CPU
Same HD sizes
Front/Rear camera

iPad 3

Upgraded display res
Upgraded HD sizes
4G (LTE)
Upgraded camera w/ flash
If this was the case, who wouldn't wait 6 months for 4G, 128 GB, and retina display
Me. I believe in buying each new top of the line model every time they're released. Cost of selling the last model after buying the next is likely to never exceed $100-$200. That's way too little an amount to keep current. I read an awful lot of posts here that ignore this fact.

I Need A 128 GB Model Really Badly. Willing to Pay Premium Price Too.

I have 1481 Apps organized in folders on 6 pages of my iPad and they take up 45 GB of storage space. The 64 only nets 59.2 GB. so even to store a small amount of music, movies and photos I need a 128 GB model for sure. :eek:

The secret sauce for iPad 1.5 will be Thunderbolt port out the top for connection to large display...
iOS 5 will finally include connectivity for external storage, but only via Thunderbolt.

Possibility of bumping to 128 gig storage

iPad 2.0 in Sept will be the big update... HD and other goodies and gestures abound!

wow that is a ton of apps. how in the world do you find time to use them all?

also, if they announce an ipad 2 pro with retina tomorrow, i'll pay whatever. i want it.

how exactly does thunderbolt work? i have a new hdtv and it'd be cool to hook my ipad up to that, so how does it work if ipad 2 had thunderbolt?

i'm gonna do what i did for the iPad and wake up at 2am (western australian time) full of hopes for the announcement of iPad 2 and end up being dissapointed at the spec bump (and OH DEAR LORDY LORD, a camera)

like some of you guys/gals here, i think apple has definitely became complacent. design (mad props to ive) is the only area that apple does astoundingly. hardware and software is abysmal at best. milking off their golden cow to the max.. don't get me wrong. iOS is amazing.. but it's evolution is pathetic..

i would really hope against all hope that we'll get an iOS that's catered more towards a tablet. honeycomb, webOS, heck, RIM's playbook even has a far better feature filled OS than the iPad's. sure, it's not smooth etc.. but i'd rather apple perfect the invention of a car rather than just stick to a bicycle just because cars are faulty..

and hardware wise, yes, we dont "need" the massive horsepower of 1GB RAM etc but having more is always nicer isn't it..
