The specs DO matter in REAL terms. The core market for tablets is STILL techies.

Tony
Of course the Zoom looks interesting (if expensive), but the core market for tablets is not techies: the niche market is for high-spec, highly customisable devices; the core, mass market is for tablets as very simple to use content consumption devices. That's why my parents have an iPad ;)

You realize that everything you are saying is opinion, right?

Who said otherwise?

I strongly disagree. The core market for iPad is the general public. The secondary and growing market is corporate and specific professionals (i.e. med). Given the non technical nature of iOS (no visible file system, limited customization, no terminal UI) technical people are probably one of the slimmest slices on the pie chart.

I just don't buy it that there will be an iPad 3 later this year. Certainly, Apple can't ANNOUNCE that tomorrow since that would kill iPad 2 sales. And I don't see how they can come in with just a minor spec bump and expect to compete with the high spec tablets coming out now - they would certainly lose market share.

LOL to who? Come down to earth.

Then you agree with me...the general public would keep buying iPad 1.

The problem with apple (or lack thereof) is that they make a single product that must suit techs and the general public alike.

Knew it...

I'm in total agreement with this latest RUMOR. Apple has had this thing for a while and because of the recent competition of newer/better spec wise tablets they have to release early the iPad 3. IMOHO, i would wait for the iPad 3. Apple has failed by releasing an inferior revision of their magical device. They know this and should have included spec bumps in the first version.

iPad 2 = iPad 1 with front & rear facing camera, minor spec bumps that not going to compare to competition (BET). SHAME ON YOU APPLE. You'll see.

Apple is making iPad 4s and 5s right now and fine tuning it. We should all wait for the iPad 3 where they will definitely need to show us that they can be innovative and not slow to market.

LOL to who? Come down to earth.

Everyone will care when they see their Android friends using apps designed for higher performing machines that will not run on their iPads. This is already starting to happen. This is no different as to why people buy newer more powerful computers. Yea, if you are just using the iPad to browse the internet or apps as they exist today then you should be fine. Just like you are fine using a single core Mac computer if you are only doing Word processing.

The next generation apps will make the need for higher processing tablets and phones more apparent.

Not to mention (that I keep mentioning) the other hardware "specs" that ARE visably apparent that the iPad won't have that others have, such as 4G, USB, HDMI, microSD and the like, as well as a shiny new more modern OS. Bottom line is that the iPad 2 is still going to look like a first generation device. The iPad undoubtedly will still be the best selling tablet by far - Apple had a big head start and a loyal core market of fanboys, but they will definitely lose a lot of ground this year to Android devices, as is the same as what has happened on the phone side. They'll need to step up their game and stop playing around giving us minor updates after a year. The market is still too young and dynamic for them to rest on their laurels.

But of course, the specs are just speculation. We'll see what REALLY happens in about 18 hours. :)

Im hoping for AT LEAST 512mb RAM, Front/Rear Cameras, Faster Processor, new case design, and sd/usb ports.

or else im buying an Archos 101 tablet to hold me over till the ipad 3. $300 bucks for a tablet that hardware wise is absolutely badass.

You won't get SD or USB. You'll get everything else.

Sadly I know

I really think the high res screen should be a must with this update, but i doubt well get that either.

I just got accepted for my Apple Barclays card, and would love to take advantage of the 0 percent financing. This damn thing better be good. However, other than the iphone 4/original ipad I feel like these keynotes are always a let down.

Wow, as if anyone would believe an Apple employee would hurt his own company. Besides, is MR lining it's pockets from Motorola and the likes? Talk about hurting sales with unfounded BS, the second iPad hasn't even been announced yet!!! :apple:

Not everyone would sell their soul to the company they work for. Even apple. I know that I talk bad about some of the things BB does (never in front of customers of course) even though I work there

Weren't you saying "You do realize that this is just your opinion right?"

You seem to be quoting fact. USB perhaps unlikely. SD slot... I think there's a possibility that it may exist as a method for importing photos and other media. Apple has been adopting it throughout their lineup.

How do you guys think the MobileMe will be applied to the already subscribers, if they are offering a free version?

Yeah.. and I don't believe Apple would have a media event for a minor spec bump. If it's not Dual-core.. then I'm not buying. I'll get a 1st gen for cheap! Again, how many times do we have to hear that APPLE EMPLOYEES DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO PRE-RELEASED PRODUCTS! This is something moto or another company did to stir competition. They know the iPad 2 will be legit!

The idea that "everyone" has Android-using friends is where this all falls apart. I know one person who uses Android and he's another techie. I don't see them losing anything to Android yet because they've still got the jump on everybody. This thing's been in the pipe for years, and most companies have only really started bringing stuff to market in this area since the iPad hit.

And besides, all this talk of SD ports, HDMI, it's all bunk and the general public doesn't care. Case in point - iPods and iPhones. These things have never been top of the line on spec, ever, but they offer an extremely desirable compromise of form and function. This is why they sold so well.

The thing is, Apple doesn't care about spec freaks anymore. You can't please them and the general public are a much bigger group, and they're far happier with far less - so long as it is easy enough to slot into their life.

Well I know is MobileMe is just email right at this time (March 1st, 2011) and no other parts (Calender, etc.) is available. Plus with this data center coming online I sure hope iDisk gets fixed ASAP! The iDisk is being wiped all over the internet by DropBox and everyone knows it!

For my wild speculation we will get iTunes internet "Lockers" this fall during the iPod/Music event they hold every Fall.

Not sure what you're looking at, but I just logged into Mobile Me and everything is there and working.

Name one app that runs on the playbook or HP or Xoom that won't run on a iPad.

You realize that everything you are saying is opinion, right?

Have you seen or tried a Xoom? It looks pretty much the same as the iPad except for the aspect ratio. Most people THINK it's an iPad when they see it. It's battery life is similar to the iPad. It doesn't run hot. As for the interface, it's cooler than OS4 after getting used to it. Try it. It runs smoothly, in the store at least. Apps will be written to take advantage of the increased speed and memory. My iPad stutters with higher texture 3D games even right now, let only more advances game being developed for higher processor devices.

The specs DO matter in REAL terms. The core market for tablets is STILL techies.

14.8 million is a lot of techies....

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Maybe Apple will drop the iPod Touch name and replace the current 4G Touch with a new 5" or 6" iPad in September. That may be causing the confusion of a "iPad 3" coming later this year to "replace" the iPad being announced tomorrow.

iPad nano!

--from the article--

The iPad 2 is expected to thinner and lighter than the first iPad. It will have both front- and rear-facing cameras for FaceTime videoconferencing and for photos and video.

It will have a larger, beefier speaker but the screen is expected to be the same resolution as the first iPad — no super high-res screen for this update.

It will have a faster chip and more RAM, and it will likely have a Qualcomm dual-mode wireless chip for connecting to both GSM and CDMA data networks.

Let's see, thinner - lighter - both front and rear cameras - Facetime videoconferencing - better sound - faster chip - more RAM - dual mode wireless (combined ATT / Verizon). Yeah, you're right, almost nothing of interest here. Definitely should wait until iPad 3 ships...

the new iPad

I got my hands on one of the new iPads, can't really say much about it until after tomorrow.
