Everyone will care when they see their Android friends using apps designed for higher performing machines that will not run on their iPads. This is already starting to happen. This is no different as to why people buy newer more powerful computers. Yea, if you are just using the iPad to browse the internet or apps as they exist today then you should be fine. Just like you are fine using a single core Mac computer if you are only doing Word processing.
The next generation apps will make the need for higher processing tablets and phones more apparent.
Not to mention (that I keep mentioning) the other hardware "specs" that ARE visably apparent that the iPad won't have that others have, such as 4G, USB, HDMI, microSD and the like, as well as a shiny new more modern OS. Bottom line is that the iPad 2 is still going to look like a first generation device. The iPad undoubtedly will still be the best selling tablet by far - Apple had a big head start and a loyal core market of fanboys, but they will definitely lose a lot of ground this year to Android devices, as is the same as what has happened on the phone side. They'll need to step up their game and stop playing around giving us minor updates after a year. The market is still too young and dynamic for them to rest on their laurels.
But of course, the specs are just speculation. We'll see what REALLY happens in about 18 hours.
