The iPad 3 will be so great? I don’t think so! I think the iPad 4 will be better than 3.

Although I’ve heard the iPad 5 could give the iPad 4 a serious run for its money...

Rumors tell of something even better than that, though... I think I’ll keep waiting....

Why buy the best tablet around, when something even better exists in the imagination? (You can tell this has been a hard year for me to wait and not get an iPad! I can wait no more.)

Maybe Apple will drop the iPod Touch name and replace the current 4G Touch with a new 5" or 6" iPad in September. That may be causing the confusion of a "iPad 3" coming later this year to "replace" the iPad being announced tomorrow.

Never. The iPod touch is the new mainstream iPod and it is an iconic name that Apple probably doesn't want to drop anytime soon.

More importantly, apple executives over the last year have stated that the current iPad sized is essential for a great tablet computing experience. This phrase is never used for the iPod or the iPhone.

As some have said, there might very well be a larger iPod and even a larger iPad, but I highly doubt there will ever be a smaller iPad.

They may see greater sales potential with a Sept release. Which means they have two choices. Keep the ipad 1 till sept or release an intermediate upgrade now and then the ipad 3 in six months in sept.

Frankly I dont see why they dont just keep the ipad 1 till sept. There is no competition. Then in sept when there is a bit they release this total bomb of an upgrade. But that is why I dont get paid the big dollars.

And to those saying why store all the shows on the cloud? please god please so I dont have to have 600 gb and growing media collection. it would free me to get the air without having to worry about needing accesss to my shows.

Because, as it is, MobileMe isn't cloud-based at all. :p

Anything purchased from iTunes will be stored for free. If you want to upload unpurchased items, there will be a cost for it.

That would make sense since they wouldn't actually have to use up extra storage space to "store" anything I purchased from iTunes. They'd just have a virtual link to the content I purchased.

How is this an insult?

Yes, iPhones and iPods have been on a yearly refresh cycle, but the Macs tend to get a spec bump every 6-8 months. Also, with the wave of Android tablets being released later this year, and with Web OS and RIM also making a debut, Apple doesn't have the luxury it had back in 2007 with the first iPhone, they need to move quicker to stay ahead of the game with the iPad.

Its not an insult, its technology, and people should know by now that their will always be something newer and faster just around the corner.

Actually, Macs are also shifting to an annual cycle; the shortest cycle in recent years was about 9 months whereas the most recent MacBook Pros were about 11 months,

I do agree, though, people are taking everything too seriously and personally for no reason and to find this insulting is an example of that. But I don't think Apple would stray from annual cycles. It kinda makes sense, actually; iOS refreshes in the spring and fall and full updates in the summer, which each major such iteration accompanied by some hardware improvements. It's a good way to keep up with competitors' cycles, especially when we're at a point where software, at least IMO, matters more.

Ok maybe they can offer 10gb per customer, certainly not unlimited and I still stick to it not being legal!

I agree, if they offer user storage, they will definitely put a limit on it.

I don't think there will be any legal problems, otherwise Dropbox, Amazon S3 and similar services would have the same problem. I think there will be some clause in the user agreement that the end user is responsible for all uploaded content, just like an ISP is not responsible for copyright infringement even though it happens over their lines.

the third generation, ipad, my god, who is the guy kidding!
please.

so we get a modest bump up and a camera, and then have to wait a year for the next incarnation.

but that's what we, the american consuming public does best, right?

We continue to wait and buy and wait and buy......and on and on it goes.

Meanwhile back in china, millions of people, including underage children are paid peanuts, are infected by an assortment of contaminative chemicals that make them sick sometimes for life, then they're bought off by god knows who not to talk, and all for the love of Apple.

Yea, lets make sure we don't talk about this hideous aspect of their business ensuring nothing ever changes and they keep buying their products with our eyes wide shut!'

It's really kinda disgusting!

Yes, but if Jobs goes on stage and announces that MM will not be cloud-based, customers and the media will eat it up and go wild.

Isn't mobile me already cloud based?

to a point. you can play one song at a time if you save them in the music folder. but it can't stream it all at once and play one song right after the other. You have to individually click on each file for it to play the song.

would work great if you could do the idisk app and the songs all play one after the other.

I don't see how they can come in with just a minor spec bump and expect to compete with the high spec tablets coming out now - they would certainly lose market share.

I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Tony

The thing is, if they bump up to the 1.2Ghz processor (A5), double the ram to 512MB and make it smaller, is it really *that* much behind? Even with 256MB RAM it runs smoothly. The Engadget review of the Xoom said at times it had some slow downs and it has 1GB RAM, right? (Maybe even 512MB). Sometimes it's not so much about the specs as it is about how well it works. Apple made 256MB RAM work REALLY well.
Are the new processors really so much advanced that Apple would be blown out of the water if they put out 1.2Ghz dual core wit 512MB ram?

Ugh. Again with these iPad 3 rumors. Since when did people forget that apple reserves new numbers for completely redesigned products? They didn't throw more memory in the iPhone 3G and call it the iPhone 4, did they? They called it the 3GS. New numbers are reserved for completely redesigned products. They're not going to throw a retina display in the iPad and call it the iPad 3.

Heres how I see it going down: they announce potentially 12 models (I'd say 8 is more likely, as they'll probably just offer 32gb and 64gb models and drop the 16gb). Coming out soon would be the non-retina display model (wifi and 3G models), then later this year, for a heftier price tag (because you're crazy if you think they'll offer a retina display for the same or lower price point than the current iPads), you'll have the option to get the models with retina displays and maybe built in sd card slots. Both will still be considered iPad 2, or simply iPad (2nd gen).

This strategy would make sense as it would let the casual audience that doesn't care about retina, and would rather save some cash, order right away, and it would still keep apple in the tablet race this year because everyone would know a retina display model is in fact coming near the end of the year. Apple wouldn't lose sales, and it keeps them competitive. Makes sense.

By making people second guess themselves they wait and when the iPad 3 fails to materialize in the Fall they get upset and jump ship into the arms of the competition.

Uh, no, the kind of person who holds off on purchasing anything in anticipation of the iPad 3 will either keep waiting until it gets released or else buy an iPad 2 if they are tired of waiting.

If they were the type to go with the competition, they wouldn't be waiting for the iPad 3 in the first place.

For most American broadband collections, uploading a 10GB collection of music would take days to weeks, and then Apple would have to handle a LOT more traffic than they do now. On the other hand, streaming music from a home PC takes between 120-320kbps, which most homes have.

Uh. The iPhone 3GS wouldn't have been named the iPhone 4 anyway since would have been the iPhone 3. Just imagine how confusing that would have been.

That's because the iPhone 4 was actually the 4th iPhone. The 3G was the second, the 3GS the 3rd.

I think they just didn't want to use the 3G line of naming because they still use 3G technology, and 3GS+ wouldn't be very Apple-like :) So they switched from network technology-style naming to simple sequential numbering.

Mobile Me Renewal

I have a bit of a quandary. I have being watching the rumors and reports that Apple has stopped taking payments for Mobileme service. I was a little unsure if I should renew my mobile me service (which I have had since the inception of itools. I went ahead in hopes that if apple did make the service free, I would not end getting charges. Yet yesterday my renewal was up and I was charged $100. Am I out that $100 if they decide to make it a free service tomorrow?
Only time will really tell, Just didn't know if anyone has the same predicament.

I'm guessing we will see the following:

iPad 2

Revised thinner case
Upgraded RAM and CPU
Same HD sizes
Front/Rear camera

iPad 3

Upgraded display res
Upgraded HD sizes
4G (LTE)
Upgraded camera w/ flash

I'm actually excited about the MobileMe announcement. It should be good. I want to get my money's worth before they make it free (if they do).
