The thing is, if they bump up to the 1.2Ghz processor (A5), double the ram to 512MB and make it smaller, is it really *that* much behind? Even with 256MB RAM it runs smoothly. The Engadget review of the Xoom said at times it had some slow downs and it has 1GB RAM, right? (Maybe even 512MB). Sometimes it's not so much about the specs as it is about how well it works. Apple made 256MB RAM work REALLY well.
Are the new processors really so much advanced that Apple would be blown out of the water if they put out 1.2Ghz dual core wit 512MB ram?

This is so true. A dual-core cpu, beefier gpu, 512MB RAM, slimmer, FaceTime camera would literally double the performance. Even without the Retina Display this would still be a really nice upgrade.

hmm

I am hoping apple does not make the mistake of releasing a third IPAD later this year. I was waiting to by the second one but will do not need it. I will wait for a third one if announced but i feel it will hamper sales for the second one.

Also agreeing with the people above specs do not matter all the time for things like ram and processor. Look at nintendo. Look at what nintendos developers can do with the specs of their systems compaired to others.

Any news about the live feed? Will it be available?

Also, it would be nice to have an email @apple/me, but don't know if Apple wants to be in the ad based free email business.

Unsure about iPad 3 later in 2011

but that's what we, the american consuming public does best, right?

We continue to wait and buy and wait and buy......and on and on it goes.

Meanwhile back in china, millions of people, including underage children are paid peanuts, are infected by an assortment of contaminative chemicals that make them sick sometimes for life, then they're bought off by god knows who not to talk, and all for the love of Apple.

Yea, lets make sure we don't talk about this hideous aspect of their business ensuring nothing ever changes and they keep buying their products with our eyes wide shut!'

It's really kinda disgusting!

This type of post is frustrating and has no place in a tech forum. Your priorities will differ from others', but unless someone is actively infringing on your right to believe, live, and care about whatever is your focus (however noble it may or may not be), why engage in inflammatory rhetoric?

That being said, Apple has been trending for years towards streamlined catalogs. The announcement that a 13" MacBook product will be discontinued would not shock me for this reason. The addition of an iPad falling between 9.7" and 3.5" would.

Apple currently has 3 major product lines (at least speculatively) on predictable refresh paths - March/April (iPad), June/July (iPhone), and September (iPod). The MacBook line has been trending towards annual as well, but it would take someone with more energy than I to determine if a legitimate pattern exists (now it's - what - October and February?). This distribution of product releases guarantees 12 months of Apple speculation and expectation, leading to huge sales for each and every one of those lines. A shift from March to September for the iPad might actually lead to cross-product cannibalization, which seems very un-Apple like to me.

If this was the case, who wouldn't wait 6 months for 4G, 128 GB, and retina display?

Tony

The people who are happy with the specs of iPad 2 would not wait for this or those who can't afford to pay the extra cost of 128GB, 4G, & Retina Display.

Personally... you have to consider the source of this "staffer".

Anyone who would spill the beans on probably one of the hottest products on the market when working for a very secretive company like Apple and make a statement like that needs to have his head examined and is probably not a reliable source to begin with.

Again... I'll wait and see what reality is, but I'm guessing most of the obvious specs are dead on. It would be nice if there was a "wow" feature we didn't expect.... something most "staffers" wouldn't know anyway as Apple keeps the good things well under wraps even internally.

If they had plans to release an iPad 3 so soon after the iPad 2, why even release the iPad 2 at all? Apple is still selling iPads like hotcakes, and it doesn't make sense to put something out there knowing it's not up to par with what is excepted/wanted by Jobs.

Especially if it would be in short supply when iPad 1 is finally readily available on store shelves. No way iPad 2 could have sufficient supply to meet demand.

Unless you don't like to keep your computer powered on when you leave the house, there are a bunch of free through $10 apps that can stream media off of your computer to your device and do a darn good job at it. I don't see the reason for Apple to take on this role, really. It would be especially pointless it you can only access media purchased from iTunes.

The ONLY advantage that I can see is if Apple can someway pre-process and compress VIDEO that are DRM protected on-the-fly such that it can actually stream over 3G. No one can do that now. Also, if you were able to see embeded lyrics for your streaming music files, that would be something no one is doing as well. I doubt much that we get either of these, so the MobileMe cloud thing would be a totaly non-event for most.

Here are my predictions, Apple please prove me wrong.

I think Apple underestimated what competition was going to make available by the time iPad 2 came out. I think the Moto Xoom having a dual core cpu and other technology goodies took Apple for a shocker (keeping in mind that Xoom has poor battery and higher cost for a base option, also keeping in mind HP may have a hit with there tab). I think Apple was planning on making the iPad 2 a change like iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS. In other words, camera(s), ram upgrade, speed bump (not dual core, faster single core) and maybe lighter. Apple figured they would sell a lot of these because there are a lot of people that wait for revision b (and they still may). However now that competition does (some what) exist, Apple has to step things up and it is to late to do it with the iPad 2. So maybe John G, and what others are saying with the iPad 3 release later this year is true and can work well for Apple. New iPod shuffle, iPod Nano, iPod Touch, and iPad (no more iPod Classic). Then when the iPad 3 comes out it will have all the bells and whistles to properly compete with competition.

I think iPad 3 with retina could be possible this year. And when it does get released, it's gonna be HUGE. I predict iPhone 4 all over again. Apple website down, human sacrifice, dog and cats living together...MASS HYSTERIA.

Apple doesn't need to save YOUR music library to the cloud. The cloud simply has to know that you have access to it.

Apple isn't going to store 'Poker Face' a million times on its servers. It simply has to acknowledge that you have the rights to play back the song.

Wouldn't this make more sense

if you could stream your tunes from mobileme on your iphone etc that is a HUGE plus. right now, you can play music on idisk on your iphone but it doesn't play songs in a play list. only one by one.

The future is the cloud, not mass storage on your computer. The routes they are going with phones and ipad's you can bet music storage streaming from the cloud is what is gonna happen tomorrow.

yeah good thought for sure.

It sounds to me like this source is just a macrumors reader, unless the community has just happened to guess everything right and there is nothing additional whatsoever for the source to add.

So, does that not mean MobileMe is already a Cloud-based service?

yes, it is a cloud-based service. they would just be enhancing it greatly. you can stream your music from mobileme BUT only 1 song at a time. hopefully you could stream a playlist etc without having to mess with files on computers etc.

I still don't understand why people would think that Apple is going to release another iPad later this year. That is not like them, or any company really...

Why is it not like them? They have released iMacs 3 months apart in the past.
I think the eveidence is mounting that something is due out later this year.

The people who seem unable to believe this either want Apple to fail, or are those who were planning on getting the iPad 2 and are now annoyed/irritated because they face the decision of whether to buy or not.

Why does everyone think MobileMe will be free? Have you thought Apple might just be offering it digitally like in the App Store? If they do that they could sell it for full retail price instead of it being discounted on Amazon and eBay.

that is a possibility as well. There could possibly also be a free version that may entice people to purchase or upgrade their account later.

if it is really free, hopefully i can get a refund as i just paid to renew mine back in December.

granted i paid only $58 for family pack through amazon LOL.

the third generation, ipad, my god, who is the guy kidding!
please.

so we get a modest bump up and a camera, and then have to wait a year for the next incarnation.

What's really disgusting to me are the hypocritical posts from people like yourself. You've been posting on this site for years and therefore are just as much of a consumer as everyone else on here. Something tells me you aren't writing your post from your office at the Peace Corps.

These types of posts drive me crazy. This isn't freshman-year, and you aren't some kid who just realized that beef comes from cows, and are now going to try vegan for 6 months, until you forget all about it.

I'm not saying you're statements are wrong, but I'm merely saying you (and I, for that matter) are no better than the hardcore fan-boys that make my eyes roll as they complain about each new product being "not good enough" as if the industry owes them something.

Check your altruism at the door...its a tech forum.
