I think Apple underestimated what competition was going to make available by the time iPad 2 came out. I think the Moto Xoom having a dual core cpu and other technology goodies took Apple for a shocker

That seems impossible. The first generation of Tegra2 devices began to show up in trade shows early last year in various working conditions. It didn't take a corporation tech planner to see there will be a ton of Tegra2 tablets by March 2011. If anything it's amazing how little worthwhile Tegra2 tablets are available at this point.

A local + cloud hybrid system

I believe that Apple will offer a hybrid system:

1) iTunes purchases available from anywhere to any Mac or iOS device without local storage necessary.

  • This would satisfy the labels and studios because it wouldn't allow users to potentially benefit from improving the use of pirated material
  • It would fortify Apple's position in media sales because it would encourage people to buy from iTunes
  • iTunes sales would increase exponentially, justifying offering Me.com for free
  • This system would eliminate the need for Apple's responsibility for upload bandwidth, only streaming downloads from items that are already stored on iTunes servers

2) Other non-iTunes media would still be stored locally on a Mac or PC in iTunes' database but Me.com would facilitate streaming from your iTunes to any other Mac or iOS device.

I think this system would satisfy most people:

  • You get to have access to all your media -- iTunes and non-iTunes -- on all your devices anywhere you are.
  • iTunes content staying on the server means no need to manage large file libraries (option to download to your HDD if you wish)
  • Free Me.com

The only compromise is that non-iTunes content would mean that you have to have iTunes running at home. I think this is a fair compromise. Maybe you can pay for server space to upload your non-iTunes content but perhaps it's better to just purchase your content on iTunes instead.

What if it was only iTunes based content you could store, so you never had to upload anything?

Every item you buy on iTunes gets moved to your Cloud Account, so its always there, without needing to be on your device?

For me that would kill it, as I don't buy any Music/Video on iTunes. Only apps as I have no other option with apps.

They would never do that would they?

It would be a feature of their content. With Amazon's market competing, they could offer an itunes based MobileMe feature for free with your iTunes purchase.

If it were me I would totally offer this since it creates a stickiness to their storefront. Is it enough for me to buy all my content through iTunes? Probably not, but I would likely purchase from iTunes more as long as the price for content was competitive.

if you could stream your tunes from mobileme on your iphone etc that is a HUGE plus. right now, you can play music on idisk on your iphone but it doesn't play songs in a play list. only one by one.

The future is the cloud, not mass storage on your computer. The routes they are going with phones and ipad's you can bet music storage streaming from the cloud is what is gonna happen tomorrow.

You can stream the same music from your own computer with a $3 app. That includes by artist, by album, by playlist, same as in iTunes. There are a bunch of them - Audiogalaxy, StreamToMe, Zumocast, Air Video and the like. They all work fantastically. No need to upload anything. No need for iDisk or MobileMe. The only disadvantage is that you have to have your computer powered on.

And yes, you are right. The FUTURE is the cloud. Like the 2020 future. The NOW is disk based storage. Broadband carriers are imposing bandwidth limits and have extremely inconsistent services. When cities go totally Wi-Fi, that's when the revolution starts. And that's not anytime soon.

Credit Card at the ready LOL ;)

Still hoping all the iPad 3 rumours are just deliberate misinformation so no-one steals Apples thunder when they release the iPad2 with double resolution and dual core CPU, but i suspect i may be the only one left lol ;)

Either way, i'll be buying one this time round. I've convinced myself i need one so just been hanging on until the refresh... Keeping fingers crossed for as high as spec as possible... Roll on tomorrow :)

Why can't Apple just upgrade the iPad without changing the name?
Macs don't get a new name every time they get upgraded.

I think they will add a camera, bump the specs a little, and that's it for this year.

The only spec I see Apple having trouble matching from the other tablets is RAM.

I would love to be proven wrong and have them come out with a dual core A5 running 1.5Ghz with 1GB of RAM.

Other than that I just don't see the competition doing anything that would make the iPad 2 seem inferior.

And the App Store really stacks the deck in Apples favor.

A smart move would be to keep the current iPad model with 8GB of storage and release it for $399 or $429 USD. Similar to what they do with the older models of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Apple will be introducing the Apple TV app store tomorrow and new apps that will have subscriptions to live NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB.

Where did you see this? Would this be like MLB.TV where I can then stream games through Apple TV instead of buying the extra innings package?

Ugh. Again with these iPad 3 rumors. Since when did people forget that apple reserves new numbers for completely redesigned products? They didn't throw more memory in the iPhone 3G and call it the iPhone 4, did they? They called it the 3GS. New numbers are reserved for completely redesigned products. They're not going to throw a retina display in the iPad and call it the iPad 3.

Heres how I see it going down: they announce potentially 12 models (I'd say 8 is more likely, as they'll probably just offer 32gb and 64gb models and drop the 16gb). Coming out soon would be the non-retina display model (wifi and 3G models), then later this year, for a heftier price tag (because you're crazy if you think they'll offer a retina display for the same or lower price point than the current iPads), you'll have the option to get the models with retina displays and maybe built in sd card slots. Both will still be considered iPad 2, or simply iPad (2nd gen).

This strategy would make sense as it would let the casual audience that doesn't care about retina, and would rather save some cash, order right away, and it would still keep apple in the tablet race this year because everyone would know a retina display model is in fact coming near the end of the year. Apple wouldn't lose sales, and it keeps them competitive. Makes sense.

^^^ this

I just don't buy it that there will be an iPad 3 later this year. Certainly, Apple can't ANNOUNCE that tomorrow since that would kill iPad 2 sales. And I don't see how they can come in with just a minor spec bump and expect to compete with the high spec tablets coming out now - they would certainly lose market share.

I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Tony

+1

You're not the only one that thinks this way.

Are you crazy?

"Come to see what 2011 will be the year of"

So, tomorrow we discover what the year of 2011 is all about (clearly ipad2),
and yet a way better over the roof improved ipad 3 is announced in SET 2011.

yeah, that makes sense........

oh, wait....

the fact that they are saying that there will be an ipad 3 on september is stupid. even if it is true where does that leave us, everyone will want to wait (at least many here at this site). it wont stop many from buying it but i don't like this at all. at this point i am just exited over ios 5 if that even happens.

Uh, no, the kind of person who holds off on purchasing anything in anticipation of the iPad 3 will either keep waiting until it gets released or else buy an iPad 2 if they are tired of waiting.

If they were the type to go with the competition, they wouldn't be waiting for the iPad 3 in the first place.

Uh, No. If your going to quote me then quote what I said in its entirety. I was making the point that this might be some negative marketing brought on by a competitor. I was simply trying to rationalize this obnoxious rumor.

LOL, I just got the mobile me box from Fry's (electronics store) for 79.00 about 30 minutes ago :(

My free mobile me trial is good till the 14th so I guess I'll just hold of on breaking the seal on the box till then. If it goes free then I'll return it, if not then I'll open and activate it.

I could see them previewing a few things that are relevant to the new iPad and then saying we will be revealing more at an event for developers on x date.

they have previewed many updates in events like this one, just to show that they are working on it. and then after the event the new software is for the devs to download. it might happen it might not but i am crossing my fingers

Why would Apple be so concerned with tablet competitors as to release a "1.5" iPad and an even better "2" six months later?

They do not concern themselves with phone manufacturers rolling out new more power Android phones every other month. Nor do they release desktops or laptops multiple times a year. Apple makes a solid super high quality product that "JUST WORKS" and says to hell with the rest of the industry. We're not following you, you just try and keep up with us.

iPad 3 in the fall is not happening.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; de-de) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Not sure it would even be legal for them to have all your music on the cloud (did you really buy it or copy it) and hard pressed to believe even apple has the resources to put every customers entire collection in cloud. More likely you can stream from a home computer over the web.

I can upload any file I want on cloud storage now. I could have shoplifted physical cd's i have in a mini-storage... nothing legally stopping me from storing stolen goods. The crime was stealing the content, not storing it. The only reason Apple wouldn't allow this is retaliation from the media companies they have contracts with. Apple has music by the balls, but not so much with movies and television shows. Every record label is tied to some media company. And to the second part of your comment, that's why there is usually a storage limit. When you hit the limit, you purchase more storage. That's how all those free services make money. And if Apple stays true to form, the free storage (if any) wouldn't be much. Paying users don't get the storage space many "free" options offer.

The real question is: Is it a storage locker, or does it have the ability to stream the content? I don't get the need for streaming content you own. Home networks make it moot at home. Most people might just want a track that hadn't added to their iPod randomly. Even though I could store my 10G iTunes library on my iPhone, I keep the iPod cleaned up to tracks I generally don't want to skip over. If you have a large library, the skip button is used a lot.

Apple will be introducing the Apple TV app store tomorrow and new apps that will have subscriptions to live NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB.

I hope! I recently bought it over the Roku box and am having buyers remorse. I hope they improve the device with a software update. I can rent something on my Mac and it plays in a minute or less. On the Apple TV it usually tells me in 49 minutes I can start to watch my 42 tv episode rental. Appalling. Netflix streams instantly in HD and Apple can't get this to work?

Ugh. Again with these iPad 3 rumors. Since when did people forget that apple reserves new numbers for completely redesigned products? This strategy would make sense

Apple has never been a company to offer a bunch of models of anything! I would see them offering less models before more. Like including 3G in every model and nixing wi-fi only. (The 3G chip doesn't justify the price difference. They're a $20 component now, not a +$100 thing anymore.) I don't think anyone should have hi hopes for the iPad 2. My prediction is we are all going to see how much Apple dropped the ball by sticking to their incremental update cycle. This is a whole new product category, and their competitors are out with guns blazing. After tomorrow, I think we're going to start seeing pricing announcements and release schedules for the dozens of competing tablets. By the time their competitors had a mardis gras and showed their "wares" Apple couldn't have switched gears competitively. Not that they really need to, but I can totally buy into an iPad 3 sooner than later if tomorrows updating is as sad as I'm expecting it to be.

you can stream the content currently. you can play a song 1 song at a time, but not a playlist. i do it every once in awhile from the idisk app on my iphone. There is just not a way to repeat the song or play more in a row as you have to click on each file to play it.

Well the competition has / will have 1 GB RAM and a dual core processor, which is not a small deal. Not to mention 4G support, microSD card storage, HDMI and USB ports, higher resolution, Flash Support, and more modern OS in Honeycomb (this is subjective of course). Probably a better rear facing camera, if anyone cares. That's assuming that the iPad 2 comes in as expected.

So yes, hardware-wise the iPad 2 will be behind. There is a huge advantage with the Apple app-store, but that's just 3rd party developers carrying the load for Apple while Apple continues to diss them with App store policies and us with teaser hardware releases.

Tony

I've waited since the announcement last year and decided not to get the first gen, even if an iPad 3 comes out in September I will be very happy with the iPad 2 because it has everything I want.

Tomorrow I am hoping for an update on MobileMe either free or more options and I'll pay for it (want to move from gmail) and an iOS 5 preview with a free update for iPad2 this summer.

Just my thoughts...

The possibility:

Credit Card at the ready LOL ;)

Still hoping all the iPad 3 rumours are just deliberate misinformation so no-one steals Apples thunder when they release the iPad2 ...

The result:

...if tomorrows updating is as sad as I'm expecting it to be.

So, I was watching "The West Wing" recently, and there was an episode that was all about debate prep and what it would take to "lose" the debate. The entire focus wasn't necessarily how well the candidate answered the questions, but rather how well the candidate answered relative to how well the public expected the candidate to answer. In short, if the expectation was that one candidate was going to be a perfect statesman and the other a bumbling fool, the person who was expected to be a bumbling fool could effectively win the debate if s/he answered one question well and his/her opponent stumbled on one answer.

Now, the relevance here is that Apple has a really high level of expectation going into events like this one, especially given (a) the success of the first iPad, and (b) the degree of anticipation going into the second iPad. Now, if Apple wants to make as big a splash as possible, they have to lower expectations. And all of these rumors are succeeding in doing just that.

Does that mean that I think that the iPad 2 is going to be the dream machine, fulfilling everyone's fondest wishes? Of course not. But I do expect that it will be a good and reasonable update. It might not have a retina display, but I expect that it will have an improved display. And so on. The point is that the rumor mill has gone from everyone thinking that the iPad 2 is going to be amazing to the iPad is going to be terrible. The truth is likely in the middle, and if everyone's thinking that it's going to be terrible, then they'll be pleasantly surprised when it turns out to be pretty good.
