I have to say that having a big virtual display available to me wherever I go with my laptop is really interesting as a graphic designer. Imagine going to a coffee shop or a coworking space where you don't have your external monitor. The dream is a holographic display of course 😂, but I'm interested to see how Apple will have tackled this headset.
As a graphic designer, lumping on goggles every time I want to do work sounds absolutely awful. Give me glasses (that I wear anyway) that aren't goggles and we'll talk. Even then, Glasses aren't replacing the pencil / drawing on a surface.

Apple is working on VR content with media partners like Disney and Dolby, as well as updating Apple TV+ shows and movies to work with the headset. Apple's aim is to provide viewers with the experience of looking at a giant screen in an environment like a desert or outer space.
I know Apple is going to make the content consumption experience on this ridiculous when paired with Spatial Audio on the AirPods.

Come to think of it, people pay $3K for nice OLED TVs all the time...

I look forward to the day that we don’t have to look at this same mock-up with every Apple VR post.
May have found an article when it was first reported here. Apparently, Apple has been working on this since 2008. That's wild!

I would bet money it won't be more than $2499 - same price as a 16" MacBook Pro but it can emulate a 100+" screen! It's a steal! :) I know you are buying one, you wouldn't dare miss out on this breakthrough experience!
If Apple can pull that off this generation that would make it very compelling for a lot of people. I'm not sure if 4K is quite high enough, but it might be. Certainly by the time they get to 8K per eye it may be a no-brainer to spend big bucks on one of these.

Like most of what Apple makes, there will be fairly large segments wherein this device is a non-starter. I’m sure they’ll find a profitable corner, though. They usually do.

with app icons that can be rearranged
But only into a pre-defined, top-left snapping grid. Even with this headset Apple doesn’t have the advanced technology to place icons in arbitrary locations.

Edit: ok after jumping straight to the comments for some snark, this does actually sound really good after reading the article. Unfortunately it seems it will be a while before I can afford one, but by then maybe it will actually work as well as this description sounds.

Still, for something so expensive it sounds like an accessory to several other expensive Apple devices. The world may be a little different now, but I think it needs to be closer to an iPhone than a Watch in terms of independent capability in order to be a big success. The iPhone was the first Apple product a lot of people owned, because you didn’t need to own any other Apple products to use it.

I’m excited to see what this looks like in ten years.

How do these devices work for people who need reading glasses? I don't think I could focus on anything that close to my eyes.

I am not sure why the article goes on about VR when they don’t have a good enough Mac to create VR on !

This will be pure AR with pass through.

Also I don’t care about the $3k price. It all needs to start somewhere and develop and iterate to the lightweight solutions needed. These things just don’t appear from nowhere.

My curiosity is peaking. How on Earth is Apple going to position these supposed $3k goggles?? Not in the market, but count me as super curious to learn what they have up their sleeves.

Saw a passenger waiting to board a plane at LAX using these:

These also seem kinda interesting:

It’s in the article, there’s an insert for lenses. Probably special Apple lenses, but they did think about it. How well it might actually work for you is probably dependent on the person.

How much Apple Lenses is going to cost us? Apple Lenses, that alone sounds fancy thus it will be expensive as well.

Priced similar to Apple Pro Wheels? Come on!

I think the $3k is going to be the developer / founders edition / etc type model. The exclusivity will be part of the allure, for a little while.

I also think a key factor is that it sounds like you will look a little more like Geordi from Star Trek than like the guy from Lawnmower Man strapped into a bunch of gear while using these.

Can’t wait for the Predator Vision / Star Trek / Bender Goggles etc apps.

I really like the idea of AR/VR but I haven't purchased yet because the other headsets just aren't there yet. The specs on Apple's headset feel like we're getting closer and I would have purchased but for the fact that Apple's ecosystem is a huge detriment here. Socialising online and playing games are two big selling points of VR/AR and Apple's walled garden is just too restricted to make that possible.

Normal AR glasses won't work for this. You might get a 720p image (current prototypes are less than that), but it isn't going to be great. I wouldn't be surprised if they come out in white monochrome graphics to keep the size and complexity down. Some of the prototypes on the market already do this to slim it down. One laser instead of three. They might basically be a black-and-white Kindle on your face. If those ever come out, they will just be for a HUD. Head tracking would also be difficult to fit in a pair of glasses and the sun could overexpose infrared cameras used for tracking.

Crystal clear color XR will only be available in headsets for the foreseeable future. Headsets are likely to replace a pencil for sculpting or modeling. They are a new medium and will obviously be needed to create graphics for this medium. They certainly are not going to replace screens for artists– at least not in the first version.

I could see myself wearing lightweight AR glasses but I don't see myself adopting VR. I don't want to enter a physically isolated "virtual reality" - my current reality, with the people and Earth around me, is perfectly fine as-is.

Right... which is obviously going to be more expensive for some people than for others.

For a Meta Quest 2, the solution is... wear your glasses on your face just like normal. Oh, and add a little plastic spacer in between the forehead padding and the device, that helps to ensure that your glasses lenses don't make contact with the Quest lenses. (If they touch, both sets of lenses can become ruined.)

This looks like it’s only designed for professionals. Not targeted towards a regular consumer market. Thanks for sharing tho! Pretty cool.

Apple is pretty much the leader in casual games. Those might arguably be better for VR/AR.

Yep, they really should supply those for free but that’s not going to happen, and, the article when talking about it also mentions that you should be wearing AirPods…
