sharp edges

I've been to the Apple Store and felt this mouse. I was anticipating it for a long time (since first rumours of the touch sensitive surface) and I am VERY disappointed. The edges are sharp, not unlike the edges of a MacBook. They are uncomfortable to hold, even for a few minutes. Daily use will likely be quite irritating.

Great idea, beautiful looking but it's like no one at Apple ever picked one up and felt it. This is not a computer, this is the thing your hand sits on for hours. What it feels like matters.

Terrible execution.

Im thinking exactly the opposite, the reason they've released a seperate update is because 10.6.2 isnt coming anytime soon.

If true than some where they found a issue with the seed and they have to work on it again or they want to fix more problems and add it to 10.6.2. Like someone said before on another thread here, even if this update fixes most of the issues there will still be some sort of hole they missed and no one here wants a Microsoft Windows style of non stop updates. I should post my Microsoft Windows update history one day here I think it goes it least 2 through 3 pages long and most of the updates are all security than comes the Service Pack updates OH BOY!

My in laws got one with the new iMac and it was a great mouse. I really like it over the past mouse Apple came out with.

Exactly my thought; tried it out, couldn't stand the sharp edges. So uncomfortable. Tracking was slow, even at max. Not something I could use regularly, but YMMV. So many people purchasing sight unseen, so there will either be a lot of complaints, or a lot of cognitive dissonance kicking in.

I used it today at the Apple store and it really is the best mouse they've designed. If you want a three button mouse you can forget this one but if you want one that works just like the iPhone's multitouch but also having the added benefits of a mouse you'll love it. Right clicking seems to finally work as intended. Personally I think it's darn near perfect for most (casual) users.

Edit:
Sharp edges hurting your hands!? You must grip the thing to hard then. I had no such problems with it, but then again I use mice with a lose touch.

Also, tracking is slow on all mice on OS X unless they use their own drivers because Apple limits how fast it can go. That's why you install the MouseZoom preference pane. Been using that for ages.

Yup. about time. was gonna call up Apple, but it finally said Prepared for Shipping. Can't wait!
By the way, who votes negative so many times? I mean, there will be a post about Apple profit is up and there's like 4 negs.
Is there someone going, "Apple made profit? No, no, I don't like that." "New product? no, no, this won't do." Unless it's competitor companies doing it.

Doesn't hurt, just uncomfortable and unnatural-feeling. Very surprising to me for an Apple product to be designed this way, but it might have something to do with the cap-sense technology underneath.

Did Apple really ditch the customisable Squeeze and the Middle Click for un-customisable two-finger Swipe? I mean I still think that the touch-scroll is amazing and it's worth every compromise, but the mouse shouldn't be less handy than the trackpad! I mean on the trackpad you can scroll, zoom, swipe back and forth, and activate Exposé All Windows and Exposé Show Desktop, I'm sure there could be a way to do at least Exposé with the Magic Mouse, for example, Swipe Two Fingers Up or Down?

Try using ANY apple mouse with Maya (or other 3d apps) and you'll instantly hate it. you gotta have all three buttons to make it efficient IMO. Middle button = pan, Left = rotate/orbit camera, and right=zoom. The Mighty Mouse was instantly nicknamed the Mighty Turd in the agency I worked at.

I hope the Magic Mouse is different but I'm expecting a Magic Turd. :p

Have you tried using a Spacepilot?

I do CAD work and using any kind of mouse for 3d design sucks period

This evening a local Apple Store drone told me "definitely come back tomorrow" which i took to mean "we have deliveries but we havn't put them on the system yet" or something similar. Either way, i expect a working scrolling mouse again tomorrow evening! It also occurs that i will have bought every bluetooth apple mouse and keyboard and this will push my spend up to ... £235? damn!

Prepared for shipment

is what my status is. :)

Frankly I can't wait, I have been needing a new mouse for quite a while (my kensington is taped together) and have been waiting for this.:D

So get the proper tool for your trade.
Again... expecting a mouse that ships with a consumer device to be adequate for high end design work is not realistic.
I've worked with Maya and it requires not just a multibutton mouse but a bull whip and a cattle prod. Apple's goal is to make its devices simple. I think the new mouse addresses the needs of the VAST majority if its customers properly.

BTW, this is the same arguement that hard core chicklet keyboard fans make against the iPhone, and the answer is the same. Its only limited by its software, which will advance as needed.

I think Apple designs a mouse to be used as an everyday mouse, knowing that there are 3D navigation devices (like the Spacepilot). I use Photoshop a lot and noticed that the old Mighty Mouse is too clumsy to do precise selections compared to other mice, but then I realised that I should be using a graphics tablet anyway, and that seriously makes every mouse seem useless for Photoshop.

I think that if you're really a professional, you have to invest in specialised devices for what you do. Just like if you're a gamer, you want a mouse with a cord and with lots of customisable buttons, not an everyday mouse like the Magic Mouse.

Bundled with new iMac

The Magic Mouse is the best mouse I've ever used. I love being able to scroll, without a stupid scroll wheel. I thought it looked very short (a low profile) at first, but I find my hand just hovers above it very easily. If you're finding it has hard edges, maybe there's a better way to hold it?

If I were left handed, I would like the fact that it works on either side of the keyboard. As it is, I find it works perfectly for my kids' small hands. They can grip it easily and click the one huge button without trouble. If I could only teach them to stop touching the glossy screen with their greasy hands...

How about retail availability? Anyone know if the SoHo store has them yet?
You barely beat me to the same question. lol. I'm wondering the same thing.
Just called the other two Apple Stores in NYC. Both said no Magic Mouse in stock yet. Didn't try the SoHo store since I had 3 long callers ahead of me but I think I'll get the same answer. I think I'll just get the mouse on Sunday or Monday just to be sure...

I think I'll stick to logitech's ergonomics even though they don't match the aluminuim look as nicely.
