Touch ID is better IMO. I don't want to take my sunglasses off to unlock my phone- that's unnecessary especially when I think of how often I use my phone while walking.

I enjoy picking up my 7+ from my desk with my finger on the home button so it unlocks without a swipe. Having to swipe up while/after picking up seems like another small but unnecessary change made in the name of small bezels.

All of this seems like Apple's main objective was to reduce the bottom bezel at all costs. This was clearly not their plan, as they would not have implemented Touch ID into their MBP only to eventually remove it.

They were upfront with removing the headphone jack because of space and therefore kept it in all their other devices. But Face ID is being sold as "better than Touch ID", so I'd expect them to use it as a replacement for Touch ID and home buttons on other devices.

Some of this just sounds like a sales pitch and doe snot make sense.

So if you have a family member, a twin perhaps then they admit it could be fooled.
but a "Hyper realistic mask" that's copied from YOUR face, nope it won't be fooled by that.

So it's super super critical.
But hey, you can wear hats and sunglasses, perhaps a beard, and that will be fine.

Sorry, I want to see this tested by REAL people.

It can't be sooooo "million to one" secure it's only you and you alone.
And yet be so easy going you can have t all all angles, wear all sort of stuff, makeup etc, and it's fine about that.

Does not add up.

They have made the process of unlocking the phone slower and not to mention apple pay. Scan face and swipe up/ scan face and then double click to confirm payment.

Touch id: put finger on it and it unlocks to homescreen. Apple pay, hold your print on he device and it completes the transaction.

Seems like they should have hold back until there was a way to also implement touch id into it. Talk about a two way authentication. Face and print.

If the implementation is similar to the Lumia, wearing sunglasses will not have an impact its functionality. It uses infrared camera to detect your eyes.

It continually updates the face map so it always recognizes you.

Imagine someone seeing a picture of you with and without a beard. Big difference. But if you take a picture each day or even many times a day as that beard grows, the change is far less drastic and the difference isn't much.

There are a LOT of people crying about this feature without ever using it. People cried about Touch ID too because they had the chance to use it. I recommend trying it before you whine about it.

So what if you shave off your beard, or it it going to keep many many versions of you ?

I'm skeptical, as Apple has not specifically mentioned or shown sunglasses in their documentation or presentation. My other qualms stand tho.

This will all depend on how well they get “attention aware” to work. If they can’t pull it off that’s a big problem.

I and I think many others won’t be comfortable with a phone that can unlock by someone pointing it at you.

Apple have given themselves extra time to figure it out and you can be damn sure the YouTube brigade will be all over it when it launches, exposing any problems, flaws or new “gate”s that they can.

This is a risk for them but they’re obviously confident enough in the tech or they would’ve gone for the rear-side Touch ID option.

Anyone here think Apple "WILL NOT" bring back Touch ID Under the screen, when someone else develops it into a working product they can use?

That’s great but most people prefer will prefer Touch ID.
You know this how? Personally, I hate Touch ID. Depending on what work I'm doing my fingerprints rarely register because of either debris on my hands, or just my fingerprints bring altered. Face ID will work better for me. I know other people who feel the same way. I just want to know what methods you used to come to your arbitrary quantifier of "most"
i don’t hate Touch ID. I like it a lot, in fact. But it doesn’t work all the time for me, either.

At this point, it doesn’t matter what most people prefer. Most people are not going to get the iPhone X. Those who hate the idea of Face ID, and those who won’t pay $1000 or more for an iPhone, and those who don’t want to wait another six weeks to preorder, and those who object to the iPhone X for other reasons will self select out. Even so, Apple will sell more of them than they can make for a while. The ones who end up with an iPhone X in their pocket will be highly incented to make Face ID work for them (us). Unless the feature really doesn’t work for us, we’ll come to see it as the normal, seamless way to unlock an iPhone. We’ll look forward to seeing the feature on other devices, like the iPad, AppleTV, doorbells, automobiles, etc.

Blah blah blah...I remember when Siri first was unveiled. It was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. And yet...even all these years later "it just (sort of) works". I hope there is a way to keep the old way of logging in by simply entering your code. A lot of tech these days is inventing solutions where no problem existed.

I suspect the masks do not work because the do not have real eyes (it was said that the eyes should be open for FaceID to work). But what if someone put a mask on his/her face (thus providing real eyes). Apple did not mention they do iris scans.

No, not like that. I want to use faceId for unblocking but not all the time. I don't feel comfortable with this camera analyzing me all day. It would be great if the camera were hidden behind a bezel that'd slide up and down to reveal/hide the camera when needed.

The iPhone would have been watching and listening the entire time. It would have probably heard that special someone in your life yelling at you that you look like a caveman, it would have noticed a new charge for harrys.com. Maybe it would even notice you shaving. Put it all together - bingo. Face ID is now expecting clean-shaven you. :D:D:D

Machine learning. Yay!

I still can't believe unlocking a phone with your face is seen as this amazing feature. What ever happened to "why fix it if it ain't broke" ? Who cares about face ID when Touch ID was nearly perfect and didn't require you to look at it and Swipe up which is a longer process no matter how you spin it. It seems like Apple focused on this and those Animal Emojis more than anything.

Next years Note 9 will have what's necessary ( a under the screen fingerprint reader).

I never had any doubt that FaceID would blow out of the water anything Samsung came up with. I'm still certain of that. I think it remains to be seen how it works when it comes to things like Apple Pay unlocking, but regardless I'm still pretty happy with TouchID.
