I'm not a conspiracy type of person, but boy, millions fingerprints and millions ultimate detailed and very accurate scans of people's their faces...

I know, I know, pple keep stating that every data will be stored on the device only and that Apple doesn't do anything with this information.... but this should be every CIA agent's dream, or in fact for any secret agent around the world IF that what Apple is stating would not be true....

.... I believe Apple, I think it would be suicide for the company, well let's state very damaging, if they where not tellen the truth...

Face ID Special Features

With the "attention aware" feature, the iPhone X knows when you're looking at it. Face ID will display notifications and messages on the Lock screen when you look at the iPhone X, it will keep the screen lit, and it will automatically lower the volume of an alarm or ringer when it knows your attention is on the iPhone X's display.

This is actually pretty cool. I don't understand why they had to spend so much time showcasing animoji while completely ignoring this usecase. I wonder if they'll go further with the technology and make it possible to control the device with facial gestures. Could be huge for people with disabilities if you think of it.

The perfect world would be BOTH why NOT have touchID AND FaceID... seems like the future is both.

I agree. I won't lie, I was upset that there is no touch ID on the X. I'm not a big fan of the entire idea of facial recognition. As an option between passcode, fingerprint, and facial recognition, I prefer the first two. If I decide to go with the X, I think I will end up using passcode a lot and I think that will be the case for a lot of people.

Hopefully next year when they update the phone, it will include a fingerprint scanner as well.

This seems less secure in the context of a police search than TouchID. Forcing me to touch the phone with my finger is a lot more of an active process than having me cuffed to a chair and pointing my phone at me. Boom- unlocked without touching me or my consent.

Yes and a mugger could force you to unlock your phone. So what? I never heard of it happening with Touch ID and I doubt I will with Face ID either.

You guys try so hard.
The difference is, the thief doesn't have to force you to do anything. Just grab your phone, flash it in your face for a fraction of a second, and run.

I doubt this is a big issue, but in some of the demo videos after the show, they showed someone pointing the phone at the face of the owner and unlocking the phone. I guess a thief could steal your phone, point it at your face for a fraction of a second and take off with your unlocked phone.
Hardly an issue - you would then go to your computer and lock the phone remotely with find my iphone - yea, you lost the phone but they will end up with brick.

The only thing I'm not comfortable with is having this very advanced camera stare at me all day. It would be great for users privacy to have the phone hide or block the cameras while they're not being used.

1 face is stupid. My wife and I will use each other's phones all the time and having to put in a passcode is really dumb. I already thought faceID was dumb and all the info that's now coming out about it confirms it.

Face ID When Unconscious or Sleeping

If someone knocks you unconscious or attempts to unlock your iPhone X with your face while you're sleeping, it's not going to work.

As mentioned above, you need to look at your iPhone for Face ID to grant access to your device.

What about if “attention aware” is turned off?

It says elsewhere in the article you don’t need to look at the phone when this feature is turned off??

Not sure if has been addressed yet in this thread but as someone with an eye affliction that causes intermittent and involuntary eye movements, how would this affect the accuracy of Face ID? Not that I'm in the market for a new phone yet, having just gotten one after the iPhone 7 refresh.

It's not staring at you all day, it turns on when you need to unlock your phone, otherwise it works just like any other camera phone. If you're not worried about your current phone camera I don't see why you should worry about this.

It's un upgrade from having your finger chopped off and used against you!

Some people reported eye discomfort when using the facial recognition feature of the Galaxy S8. Did Apple implement it differently than Samsung to reduce the chances of that happening with the X or is it basically the same setup?

Does MR get paid by Apple to write articles? This one seemed like an Apple press release rebuttal against those denying Face ID. I do agree with the last bit though... looks like apple is going to get rid of Touch ID and use Face ID for future phones, unless they do an "SE" version with Touch ID in the future.
