I bet the reason apple updated the cube is to use their iPhone glass technology.

Where's the bathroom?

Is there a spot in that cube where one might pee, or have a private conference? Pics of employees scratching, or picking their noses please!

This renovation is 0.0075% of Apple's 80 billion in the bank.

Apple could renovate this cube 10,000 more times (with the same procedure) and they'd still have 20 billion in the bank.

Looking at the comparisons, I think I'd prefer the old version... the different pieces of glass add detail I think.

Yes, but it's not technologically superior. Apple probably wants to show that they're on the cutting edges, even if it may reduce the richness of the look.

I like the old one better.

Me too, but I like how Apple keeps up with new [glass] technology. It's very cool to see that they made this upgrade like it was nothing just to keep up with tech "as usual".

This was probably something on Steve's todo list. He was probably unhappy with the appearance of the multiple panes and told someone exactly how he wanted it to look. Boom. Done.

That is not a window you want to accidentally hit with a baseball...

Not accidentally, no...

No it doesn't--which was the whole point of the renovations: to replace many smaller panes with fewer larger ones--for heightened aesthetics, greater structural integrity, and enhanced viability.

It's arguable that any aesthetics have been heightened here. The new design is blander and self-effacing. The next improvement is probably to remove it from the landscape entirely.

When I hear "greater structural integrity" it reminds me of the genius idea of placing all the ports right next to each other in a row on a Macbook. It weakens the ability of the metal to withstand pressure or shock. Is that what is meant here?

As for "enhanced viability" - what the hell does this marketingspeak gibberish even mean? Glass is inert. How are you going to measure its viability?

I don't think one is better than the other, I think they are just different. The old one has a cool industrial look with all the visible connections and shiny hardware... the new one has an austere simplicity that allows the material to fully express itself... it's less about the engineering and more about the glass itself. I have a feeling that in person... those huge swaths of uninterrupted glass and their reflections would be pretty awesome in their own way.

The white balance and lighting situation between the two photos is very different, as well. I think if you tweaked the newer photo toward blue and took a photo at night with more reflections about, it would be more impressive.

Was the effect they wanted to make it disappear? Its nice if you you want one big ass fish tank because you have something to view inside all you see now is the ugly building at the back!

I think the seams highlighted complexity of the construction now they removed that it looks like a boring old fish tank you see at sealife centres with no fish!

This is textbook psychology pioneered by the Catholic Church over hundreds of years. Build an impressive and futuristic building (Cathedrals with stained glass windows were awe-inspiring in the middle ages) then the peasants will believe you have either supernatural powers or something worth having and paying money for (religious belief...or an iPhone). The bottom line is that both institutions (the church and Apple) want your money.......and your soul !!

The same except for the torture stuff in the dungeons.

Those who "don't see the difference" here clearly have no appreciation for the architectural technology that went into making this structure happen.

I haven't read the whole thread so please excuse me if this has already been said....

I wonder why they removed the metal bollards that circled the old glass cube. That was no doubt to prevent cars etc crashing into it in an act of violence/vandalism. So I wonder what made them decide to ditch those....

Really? A "waste of money?"

Maybe you think this renovation was a waste of money. Personally, I think it looks great and would love to see it in person, but back to the point about the proper use of money. From an outsider's view, Apple has always been over-the-top in regard to their image, and it's a big part of what has made them so successful. I hope they continue their manic obsession with perfectionism. So, if this cube helps further solidify the Apple image in our minds and fits with their, apparently successful, business model, then great. Also, and most importantly, I suspect a few people were employed by someone other than the government as Apple profits were reinvested on this project. Is it really so bad for the private sector to help create jobs? It seems like a win-win to me.

I Need more lemon pledge!

+ 1

Is it nicer? Yes but it was nice enough as it was. 6 Million could go to so much better causes especially during these times.

So what you're saying is that a successful business should not invest in their own business? This thing is a tourist attraction and I bet they sell stuff to people who come to see it.

What do you think they should do with the money? Bail people/businesses out of the recession? Yeah, that helped all those banks! I don't think 6 million would solve recession problems.

With the new panels being so huge the glass is presumably much thicker. Maybe it's actually thick enough to stop a car all on it's own?

I find it funny how some people are criticizing Apple for wasting their money on a project like this! I wonder if these people would criticize me for spending my money on things they don't like!

Oh please don't play the "but there are starving children in Africa" card. This isn't your money, or my money; its Apple's money.

Apple isn't a private company. As a shareholder it is MY money. :p
That being said, I like the new design a little better - but don't think it was worth the cost and didn't think the original one was either.

You could say that about anything.
