m Iwaiting to see the price of the LG V30 in the UK :) I have had iPhones since 3Gs. Apple is just charging stupid money because they can. OLED has been out on phones for years and so has wireless charging. We shouldn't be paying for that tech to finally come to an iPhone they should be discounting the phone as an apology for being useless.
The V30, unlike the V20, has no user replaceable battery. I bought a V20 a year ago, after Apple ditched the phone jack. It's a nice phone, has great DAC sound over wired headphones or speakers, AND has an easily swappable battery (spares run around $20). For streamlining to my iMac and iPad, I retain my 6S+ (which I'll replace with a new 6S+ if I still want an iPhone over the next year or so).

"failed" because the phone itself seemed to be ready to use after a start up/reboot. More of a demo mistake and not software. You can see the text on the passcode screen. "Your passcode is required to use Face ID" no different when you reboot and need to use your code to use Touch ID.

No, it quickly failed several times, which is why it then asked for the passcode.

As someone pointed out, he wiped both sides of his face, apparently in an attempt to avoid some kind of reflection problem. Stage makeup? Sweat? (sweat would've failed Touch ID as well, though for a different reason)

Nope. After a reboot the device will tell you to put in the code but "restart" is specifically mentioned. The error message during the demo is what you typically see after a few failed attempts.

+1

Ditto for the 48 Hours warning.

Boy I really try to resist being snarky... that said, if a couple hundred bucks is the straw that breaks the camel's back, it might be time to hit your boss up for a 10¢/hr raise so you can cover the step up to the new tier. (I assume making "damn good money" means you could afford the 8, but that you only want the most expensive flagship.)
I could afford the iPhone X price, doesn't mean that I will be buying one, I'm just careful with my money. I knew what it was like to grow up with little. Take for instance the price Apple is charging in Australia, even the TV has mentioned that Apple is charging more here. I don't like the choices that Apple is making in lots of areas and I am still on an iPhone 6. I normally upgrade on a 2 year cycle.

Also Apple has had the same shell for 4 years now 6,6s,7,8 and not much difference between them

Go and restart your phone and see for yourself.

You are absolutely correct.

However, it still doesn't seem to have been a problem with the Face ID system itself. If I try unlocking my phone with an unregistered finger (or if Touch ID fails due to wet fingers etc) it doesn't bring up the message that they got yesterday. It just brings up the number pad and says "Touch ID or Enter Passcode". Carry on with a wrong finger and it says "Try Again". Finally, after a number of attempts you get the message that we saw yesterday.

My guess is that in setting up the demo, someone who isn't registered on that phone tried to swipe up and the phone correctly turned off Face ID. You then have to type in the passcode to turn it back on, just the same as happens with Touch ID.

Sometimes I see that message after my phone has been unused for a while (usually in the morning), without the phone even trying to use Touch ID.

If my guess is correct then actually, Face ID worked exactly as it should.

The other possibility is that it failed multiple times and just brought that message up without the intermediate screens that I see (I'm using a 6, so perhaps things have changed since then anyway). As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem conclusive one way or another as to whether it was a Face ID problem or a setup issue.

Eventually they are going to have to move with the times or pick another phone manufacturer.

I can see how owning lots of adaptors, extra cables and the challenge of keeping as much gear as possible charged up might seem cool to you, but it's not for me. I like my gear simple to use, low maintenance.

Dude, chill. Have ever listen to any event, Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. where they didn’t pitch they were doing something earth shattering? If you don’t believe the hype, good on you. But don’t let it ruin your day.
OK you're right, full disclosure, I live in the UK and on my commute I passed two homeless guys in the street. Puts talking about a phone into perspective. I'm sorry.

What craziness are we living in where you can buy a MacBook Air for the same price as a phone?
Not crazy at all. I can buy a car for $999 as well and it can even take me places and go 120mph. The iPhone X can't do that.

Don't be like any hater who compares apples to bananas.

so you're pretty much in the first category of people buying it :) for posing ..

Wouldn’t consider myself a poser. I would put that sort of a person into the group that wants to publicly show off that they have an X wherein they take selfies and all that other rubbish. I’ll just aniturd my friends into annoyance.

I think a lot of people will default to the iPhone 8 ... because the X is too pricy.

Still at these prices I'm seriously reconsidering an Android phone.

But iPhone 7 at a lower price seems more appealing, unless you really want the wireless charging.
8+ has the new portrait mode so it looks better than 7+, but iPhone X is smaller with a bigger display and is "only" $200 more.

I think I'm going to keep my 6s for another year, then hope for a price drop of iPhone X in September 2018 when they'll introduce X2 or Xs or whatever they'll call it.
In my country iPhone X starts at about $1400 including taxes, way too much for a smartphone, even for the best on the market.

So, I just found out the iPhone X (256GB model), will be just under €1,400. That's just shy of US$1,800!!!!!!! Are you kidding me?!

I'll be taking the 8 Plus purely on that decision...I couldn't care less if the X is leagues above the rest.
  1. Apple you are taking us Europeans up the royal behind with those shoddy exchange rates.
  2. Face ID is clearly experimental. The fact that it didn't work TWICE in your demo tells me this.
  3. How the heck does this work in the dark when I'm lying in bed. That's right. You have a sodding great beam of light that will shine on my face. Imagine it in cinemas! The comedy value of all those flashes of light will quickly wear off. Not to mention it'll be a beacon for thieves on the street. All they have to do to unlock the phone is get you to look at it!
Urghh....what a let-down.

Also Apple has had the same shell for 4 years now 6,6s,7,8 and not much difference between them

Why are people judging everything from the "shell"? Theres not much in common between these models INSIDE of it. if you used an iphone 7 over the last year, go try and use iphone 6 for a week...

The high price of the iPhone X is most likely to limit the demand on it. Not sure they can produce it in huge quantities now.

I think I'd get a 256GB 8 over the X because other than the design I don't see much of a difference.

WOW, iPhone X in Canada is $1,319.00 + 15% HST = $1,517.00 and that does not include AppleCare. I guess at this price I'm out.

especially when you can get a s8+ for half the price , android samsung phones are pretty close to iOS now. No reason to pay this much for a phone ever.

very disappointed. Once again there's no compelling reason to upgrade from my 6s. I'll probably get an 8 just because my 6s has been kind of buggy lately. But where's the innovation? Doesn't seem like much has changed besides the chips and it even has the same camera as the 7. Y

The iPhone X has no new features. At all. Face ID is inferior to fingerprint sensors. They finally have caught up with wireless charging that has been around for years. That's "innovation" at its finest. o_O It looks like trash. and costs well over a grand for a decent amount of a storage. It's a no from me.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is still the clear winner here. or the Note 8.

Over in Brexit britain an iphone X will cost roughly 4 percent of an average persons salary, before tax. While in the USA its around 2 percent.

Mwahahahaha that exchange rate is punishing

on the other hand iPhone X has more power than MacBook Air + it's smaller.

Yes, it's amazing but the iPhone X is an anniversary model, the flagship and will likely only available in limited quantities.

Even then it's a first gen product, I think waiting for a second refined release would make a lot of sense. And sort out that botch of a notch!

On the other hand, lets all take a moment in consideration for the people of Britain, who are currently paying more and more and more for apple tech.

Buying an iPhone in Britain is starting to cost more than your first car lol
