I've updated every iPhone since it came out pretty much right away. Majority of the time I enjoyed the battery life update and the faster processor.

But, for the first time since 2011 I think I will be holding off. My main reason is 100% Touch ID. I love that I can unlock my phone from any angle. My biggest gripe with FaceID is the need to face the phone (more time there already) AND I have to swipe up. Sounds whiney? It sure is whiney, I recognize that, but if I'm paying top dollar for my smartphone (which let's be real, iPhones are at the top of that list) then I want the most convenience possible.

For those of you saying "You should try it before you knock it." I'm with you, and I WANT it to better than Touch ID but I have a seriously hard time believing it's more convenient than placing my finger on it at ANY angle.

If FaceID is organically better than TouchID, then I am sold, but I have some serious doubts.

In the meantime, I will happily hold on to my 7 with a slightly smaller display but includes TouchID. Heck, I might even "upgrade" to a 6s to keep touch ID and regain a headphone jack.

Thoughts?

Crazy levels of fragmentation

I follow apple news fairly closely and even I can't get my head around all the different options and price points. How is Joe public off the street going into an Apple store going to choose amongst all those mid tier options?

Please tell me you are joking. They are just keeping old models in stock and selling them at lower prices. In what way is that "confusing" in the least? Anyone who finds that confusing won't be able to operate a modern smart phone anyway.

I will never understand that logic. "This business is giving me too many options! I'm so confused!" If I go to a car dealership, I'm not confused if they offer a 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015 model of the same car. I don't ask the dealership to stop selling the 2015 model because it confuses me.

We are past the point where smart phones become outdated in 2 years, so there's no reason to discontinue phones so quickly. It's a good thing Apple still offers the older phones for people who don't need the latest and greatest. No need to overpay for the 8 when you can use a 6s and be just as happy.

I upgrade every other year and $1000 for the low storage model is still absurd.
If it is absurd, don't get it.

I think a lot of people here are upset because they can't get their status symbol right away anymore. Not getting the latest and greatest tech day one or even 3 months later is not the end of the world, albeit with many here, it sure seems that way.

iPhone SE looks cheaper...:) and the iPhone X looks snazzy.

Its probably difficult to get a low cost for a high-end product.... but those who would want it, and can afford it, will get it. Btw. starting price $1,500 in Australia.

Apple is too boring and pretty much redundant. I come here coz my wife prefers ios. But iphone x is lame, told her to stick with the 7plus. As this is a waste of money for very little to offer in return.

The only way I'm in for an iPhone X is if the carriers offer some sort of deal again. Like last year, if you traded in a 6 or 6S, you got a 7 for free with bill credits. I just happened to have a spare 6 in a drawer I wasn't using, so it was a no brainer. Otherwise, I wouldn't have even upgraded to the 7 without the deal.

Same thing here will need to apply to justify an upgrade. Price is just ridiculous for an X. Sorry, Apple. Your greed is starting to show.

If there wasn't an 8/8s, the X may have been successful. But since there is the 8/8s, most people that want to stay with the Apple ecosystem and don't have unlimited cash will stick with one of those, depending on what they are coming from.

If I had to buy a phone today, I would get the 8. But I'll stick with my SE till it's too slow (probably when iOS 12 is out) or breaks.

Considering FaceID failed twice on stage today, I'm thinking I have serious doubts too.

For those complaining about price, how about keeping your phone for more than a year, and saving up for the next phone you want / need?

iPhones are not obsolete in a year.

No kidding. I was excited about a bunch of stuff today but what feature was going to make a huge difference in the way I use my phone over the 6S? (And I'd still be on my 5S if my mom didn't need a phone.) Better cameras are always welcome since I take a lot of pictures but the quality on this phone is good enough for my purposes. And I'm still running a 16GB model!

For all the "planned obsolesce" talk related to Apple, it comes from people who never owned the Galaxy Nexus. "Right, it's a Google phone but we just don't want to upgrade it anymore. Yes, we realize it's only been 18 months."

Apple does a good job at keeping their devices kicking for a while.

I feel like the iPhone X is going to go through some growing pains and it's still something of a work in progress. I find FaceID super appealing though. Not a grand appealing, but appealing nonetheless!

MBA ($800 on sale) + iPhone SE ($350) = $1,150. About the price of the new iPhone X.

Perfect for future College student and High School Grad.......just tell them that the iPhone SE is Apple's latest hybrid device: iPhone X + Series 3 LTE Watch combined into one compact easy to carry device. Without the $120 per year additional carrier connect fee for the Watch.

This guy probably has some invested interest in Apple. Just read his recent posts.

Apple is jist getting too damn greedy. They going to price themselves out of the market. You know its bad when almost everyone on a fan site like Macrumors is complaining.

It's not so much as price themselves out of the market... they do have cheaper options... the difference now is that they have so much fragmentation they are diluting the Apple experience. What I mean is that a few years ago, you basically made choices related to price on storage...now it's different hardware. They are pricing people out of feeling that special kick of buying the best/only new model. It's basically forcing a choice to feel like you have less of an iPhone because you can't or won't pony up 1k. I honestly think enough people will buy it that the folks in the middle won't matter. Now, we'll just have to wait a year or two to have the cool stuff, which will be outdated by then. I'm already thinking Android. But, it's not really Apples fault that cell companies are no longer subsidizing our phones like they used to...

Hm, iPhone X A11 page mentions the neural net, iPhone 8 A11 page does not. Slightly different chips?

I hear what you are saying but the storage as diff price points is def becoming more absurd.

Let's not forget that a this point they are essentially still selling a 4 year old iPhone 5s for a near premium price.

I agree with most of what you said, but that is definitely not true. The SE is literally twice as powerful as the 5s, has double the ram, twice as much storage for the base model, way better camera, etc. And $349 is nowhere near premium price.

I probably won't. It's not a matter of affordability either, as if you look at my sig you'll see I bought a 2016 MBP for over $3k. It's simply looking like there's not enough value associated with the cost of entry. And I think you're way off base with the status symbol comment. The iPhone hasn't been a status symbol in years. Maybe for high schoolers it still is.

But the thing is if people will pay it why not charge it? The model that probably makes the least sense right now is the 8 Plus. If you're paying that much you might as well throw another $200 down and get the X. I think they probably could have streamlined this line-up a bit. The SE design is getting old. If they want to offer a small phone probably time for something new. The 6s and 6s Plus could have been eliminated and they could have lowered the price on the 7 a bit. A new SE, 7, 8 and X is probably enough phones to be trying to market. The line-up is getting a bit messy.

I want to agree with you but everything Apple has a luxury price tag and that includes the SE.

You can easily meet/beat all of the specs of an SE on an Android device that costs $200.
