Like the North Avenue corridor needs more weekend traffic.

+1000

Happy to have an Apple store less than a mile away, but this area is a ****ing nightmare. I hate that I am forced to drive through it so often. Good thing the store is close enough to walk.

Just a hip-hop,skip and jump from luxurious Cabrini Green.....dope.

No, seriously, DOPE.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump (aka two blocks) from the British School Of Chicago and its 650 students, the parents of whom are paying over 20k a year per kid.

And the Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group Pediatrics office. And Borders. And Crate and Barrel. Pottery Barn. And one of the biggest Whole Foods in the world. And Best Buy. And so on.

The building is gorgeous and the CTA stop looks great.

Again, i reiterate, that this area is by nothing close to hood, poor, or rundown. It's one of the busiest shopping areas in all of Chicago, behind Michigan Avenue and State Street.

Oh, and surprise... the Apple store on Michigan Avenue also usually has a couple security guards standing around out front.

Then I suggest you read the local police reports of that area for pickpocketing, mugging and shoplifting. While it may look all nice and polished on the front, "Mich and State" is a con man's happy hunting grounds on crowded weekend afternoons and holiday seasons.

Yeah, considering how I work in a building right on Michigan Ave, I wouldn't have any idea what it's like around there. In any nice area with lots of tourists, there is always going to be some amount of petty crime, where people are preying on said tourists. Further proving that you know nothing, "Mich and State" is not a singular area friend, it's two completely separate streets with separate shopping districts. Nice try though.

Freaking suburbanites and out-of-staters.

Why on earth would you put such a nice store in chicago especally in that neighborhood? That area is pure chicago garbage!! I will probably go to the opening just to support Apple, but they could have found a better location. and wasting money to reuild the cta station.... nice move, but gives the neighborhood degerneates something nice to destroy now. no one should spend any money to clean up chicago, have all the decent people move to suburbs and bring all the crap to chicago, put up electrified fences and there would be no more rampant crime.

Just a thought: Maybe the United States should invest more in their social and educational systems (especially to support socially weak groups) instead of starting a new war every couple of years. Maybe your corporations should outsource less jobs to China and focus more on the happiness of their employees and customer satisfaction than on shareholder value alone. Maybe the American people should learn to define themselves not solely through consumption and spending money. Maybe uncontrolled capitalism is causing more harm than it is doing any good. Maybe your nation would have a more balanced social structure and a better economy with less crime problems then. Maybe.

I mean, how ridiculous - or poor or sad - is it that people get so excited about another store opening from a technology company? It speaks volumes about how degenerated and out-of-focus our society must be. It's a stupid store that sells expensive consumer technology. It's not a cancer hospital. It's not a place that treats children with AIDS. It's not an animal shelter. It's not a forum where philosophers discuss and solve the problems of our planet or where you can find any form of enlightenment. It's just another consumer temple where everybody can buy their membership with a valid credit card or the contents of their wallets. This thing is only there to feed our greed.

Oh... And "it's so sterile." ;)

Have fun. It is nice to see Apple refurbish the old gas station and the subway stop.

The refurbished Best Buy shirts are a nice touch, too. :D

I couldn't help but think,

Giant glass front + intersection + no barriers = going to happen

And lol @g4 powerbookboy

Yes, still is. Just a Toyota dealership (I think it's Toyota) and some restaurants and bars on that street though.

Don't forget about the strip club that's there, too. :D

The area has improved, but is still rough around the edges. The vacant lot where the New City YMCA used to be is kitty-corner across the Cly-Halsted intersection. Last time I was there it was still just a pile of bricks left over from when the YMCA was torn down nearly two years ago (I assume the economy stopped whatever development was planned for the location). Getting there by car is a PIA due to the traffic congestion in the area. There is a parking garage not too far away, but most people don't even know it's there. But being literally steps from the Red Line stop makes it more accessible than the store on Mich Ave. Of course, I know a few people who refuse to ride the Red Line...it's not the cleanest. And the subway platform itself under the building Apple renovated is a disaster.

Still, it's a cool looking store on a prime strip of land. Apple doesn't have to worry about another store being built right next to theirs. My guess is that the area isn't quite up to Apple's standards, but they jumped at the chance to secure that spot knowing that the area would only improve with time.

Oh, and they really, really need to get some bike racks. Didn't Apple hear, Mayor Daley loves biking! But seriously, I hope they eventually add racks, there are a lot of cyclists in Chicago.

Nah, the traffic there is so congested that you'd never get up enough speed to be able to jump the curb. :D

Did anyone who sat there for more than half an hour notice that Apple doesn't even offer *water* at their Genius *Bar*? :apple:

Also when you see someone open the door to the backside rooms and see that this very door is marked as emergency exit, peek through and see if the exit is blocked by boxes and whatnot.

Interesting to see peoples' response to the area. I have many friends who live in the city on the northwest and southwest sides who consider this area to be expensive, trendy, and yuppie. In it's day Cabrini Green was just a few blocks away (to its east) from one of the most desirable and expensive neighborhoods in the city. In a city like Chicago, being a few blocks away makes a huge difference, and being a mile away puts one in a different world. I will definitely visit this store when I am in town next month.

It's a relief. There was only a single store in the City (Michigan ave.)
There just isn't parking. You would pay more for parking than a iPod. :D
I think there's parking at this new one, at least there was before.

In the store now typing from a 13" macbook air (they are gorgeous btw) the store is really cool and while the area may have been rough a while ago the :apple: store definitely fits in with the other stores in the vicinity. Also kudos to :apple: for having hot coffee, water, and umbrella's to borrow on a cold and rainy morning!! I can't think of another company that would think to have hundreds of umbrella's to borrow just in case it rains!

Cool. Thanks for the Live Report.

the funny thing about lincoln park is that its the neighborhood with the most rapes in the city... im not kidding...

Whoa, looks like Apple changed their tables a little. Unless I've never noticed the sides of them looking like that.
