I’m in the U.S. and all my cards have chips and are tap to pay, so not sure what your on about.

That compared to Europe a massive amount of shops still demand you to swipe the card, In Europe I haven't had to swipe any of my cards for at least the last decade and I probably haven't used the chip in almost a year now.

The only reason there's still a magnetic strip on any creditcard is because of the US.

As is this isn't for me. First I don't need fast charging. I charge my phone overnight and when I plug it in to go to bed my phone is at 75% or so. I have an 11 Pro which came with Lightning to USB-C and the wall plug for faster charging - never even taken cable and plug out of box. I also think 1 m cable is too short for many uses.
What I could see is that this is first step for Apple to go no ports on phone and a MagSafe type connector providing power and connectivity for Apple Play - yes the MagSafe 2 would plug into car but then just stick your phone on it for connectivity for both. Since most cars (and everywhere else) have USB-A connections the MagSafe 2 would have to have either C or A connection.

And what transparent material that is magnetic (besides magnets themselves) could the magnets in the phone latch onto?

i thought the magnet is inside the phone and then you just slap on a case as you always did. and the magnet is strong enough to get through that case

There's definitely a magnet in the new Mag-safe cases from the videos that have been posted.

to be more accurate

  • slightly quicker charging - hardly what I would call fast. Phones today are being shipped with 45 & 65w chargers and Oppo have a 125w one. I wouldn't describe it as wireless or even tetherless?
  • has anyone ever really had a problem with not finding the charging spot?
  • I would rather cases were wrap-around so the protect the screen edge?
  • Why would you want a wallet that sticks to your phone? Credit cards are not needed if you are using any of NFC payments methods that Apple promote constantly? I can see that being a right pain in time pushing and pulling from your pocket.
  • There have been magnetic phone holders for all eternity
  • There may be one day a portless iPhone, but err, this isn't one, so not a benefit, unless you feel the need to practice for a couple of years?

A little bit of unnecessary aggression in your comment but whatever.

There’s a reason I put wireless in italics. And in terms of speed - maybe check what the iPhone can currently do on a non MagSafe Qi charger, you’ll understand why I said “faster”. 7.5w is in your future.

Regarding dropping it on the charging pad - so you’ve never had an issue where it needs to be repositioned? I doubt it.
Not every store accepts Apple Pay. Contactless, yes most stores do but here in the UK the wallet will be useful when spending over £45 (current contactless limit) in a store that doesn’t have Apple Pay. Also driving licence.

We’ll have to wait and see if there is a lip to protect the screen.

And portless - I’m not even go To entertain this facetious comment.

The new silicone cases cover the bottom of the phone? That's bad news -- I greatly prefer having this uncovered for swipe-up gestures.

You appear to be missing that the magnet(s) in the phone attract the magnets in the case in order to hold the case in place.

A MagSafe case doesn't need to hold onto the phone by other means such as the elasticity of silicone.

A non-MagSafe case can still be used. And then the fact that the magnetic field can get through such a case might be important.

No, the case is held in place at least partially via magnetic forces. Meaning there are either magnets themselves in the case or ferromagnetic materials (essentially iron, cobalt, or nickel or more generally metal alloys containing them, the most common one being steel). Putting in magnets themselves provides the largest magnetic force per weight and volume.

Does a regular USB-C to Lightning cable connect to this MagSafe Duo or is there an attached cord? Thanks

It has what appears to be a Lightning port.

That's beyond stupid. Seriously. WiFi works without cables. There's no cable from my WiFi router to any devices in my home. This "wireless" charger requires me to attach my phone with two cables to the wall.
Yet your WiFi router needs a cable to get power, just like wireless chargers. The only difference is range. WiFi can work over several metres whereas, currently, wireless charging needs a much shorted range...millimetres...

What massive amount of shops? Everything in the U.S. is chip.

No. There are magnets in the phone and in the case.

Protected by the pouch lining, although you Americans really should stop with the magnet strip every other country have been using the chip for the last 10 years and are now paying wireless through rfid, so you're using a 2 generation old technique of paying.
Umm the US has chip readers.

I use Apple Pay 90% of the time and chip 10% of the time. Magstrip literally 0% of the time.

What's the point of magsafe when you could just use non-magsafe chargers, at least you can just lift the phone up and the charger doesn't get stuck to the back with it forcing you to remove it manually.
Magsafe lets you fast charge at 15W vs 7.5 with non-apple puck

Hope 3rd party manufacturers come out MagSafe(magnet + charging) car adapters. Many types of car adapters available but the easy viewing clip-on to air vent Magsafe can become popular alternative to those without CarPlay feature in car as Phone used extensively for navigation tool. Moreover, wireless charging in car is not a standard feature.

Now that’s a stupid comment!

And it’s clear you have never owned Apple Watch, which use the same concept of charging.

Maurice Lacroix. I prefer it to my Rado, actually, which works better with a dinner suit. Runtime on one battery charge? 13 years. You can keep your Apple Watch. Seriously, if you can't explain the supposed benefits of MagSafe to someone who doesn't have an Apple Watch, then there are no benefits.

I wish I understood the point of the standalone MagSafe charging cable. Lightning is a nice tiny little jack, whereas this thing is a giant puck. I’m genuinely interested in hearing from people who prefer this specific cable option to lightning.

I completely understand the rationale for charging mats / docks where you just drop the phone onto them, and Apple has announced one of those that will also charge the Watch, but that’s not what the $39 MagSafe product is.

Please someone who wants this help me understand why you’re going to buy this and use it instead of the Lightning cable they include in the box.

It's new shiny and has magnets ! ;)

Ah.. the dwindling population of “I love my traditional watch and don’t care about smart watch”. Do you all have a group meeting every Friday night? 🙂

It‘s like your phone is connected to the electricity all of the time. Only Apple could make “wireless” less wireless and sell it!!

I use the more traditional mini ”grab safe” method where I connect my phone by inserting a cable into a little port. It’s just like MagSafe, only much cheaper, much quicker and much lighter :D
Good luck doing that next year when there is no port.

Because starting with the X-series models, accessing the Home Screen required a swipe gesture from the bottom edge of the screen, which was difficult to do with a fully enclosing case. Which leads to my current concern that these new cases will make it harder to perform that gesture.
Literally never had that problem.
