It’s the same thing as Spotlight using Google search for looking for things off-device. Given the oncoming bubble pop because no pure AI company turns a profit it makes perfect sense to go with a safer bet like Google. I’d quite like it as an option in VI too.

Great, we will change from "I found this for you on the web" to "Based on what I can see on your phone I hallucinated this for you".

Some people love AI and I am happy they have a technology they find handy and more productive, I fall into the other camp and can't trust the made-up outputs; preferring real human experts.

I also seriously desire trust and privacy on my devices and anything that has access to that private data and relays the info willy-nilly back to any homebase as Siri's slated context awareness will absolutely violates my comfort.

Even with claims of "pinkie promise we won't train on your data or allow government pre-crime scanning" we know it's too juicy a target for them not to.

Apple flushing themselves over AI is peak irony for a company that once touted "Think Different".
"Once" is the point.

Tim Cook's Apple is simply unable to hire skilled software engineers. Not only that, but under him, Apple has been unable to keep software engineers. A multi-trillion dollar company can't pay to keep engineers around?

The stupidity by Apple's engineers is seen everyday -- mostly by people that work with phones:

- Every time I help someone complete a phone to phone transfer, it gets stuck at the iCloud "login" screen and spins and spins. You have to restart both phones to get it to work properly. Only been an issue for over a year now -- still not fixed.

- Siri has been around since 2011. You're telling me an entire team of engineers were incapable of programming AI machine learning into the software after all this time? How did Siri not learn to be better on its own. How do you not continue to build a smarter assistant based on year to year coding improvements?

We should be able to choose which AI model we want associated with Siri. I'm not a fan of Gemini. I find it highly censorious compared to ChatGPT/Perplexity etc.

Only 1.2 billion per year and no access to data to further monetize.

Hmm.. 🤨
Tell me we are in a bubble without telling me we are in a bubble. These companies are spending $100's of billions to build out data centers and when one of the largest users available comes to use their AI, it only costs $1B? I'm terrible at math but that math doesn't seem to math.

Perplexity is an AI wrapper. Buying Anthropic makes more sense from a technological perspective, but it’s likely too expensive.
Copy, didn't realize. If they did buy Anthropic, I'd argue a "buy once cry once" mentality, especially given how much cash Apple has on hand. They are falling behind fast and it's unfortunate how much turnover they have had, mostly thanks to all the poaching. I know Apple is never first to the party but at this point their AI footprint is almost non-existent and I'd like to hope they catch up.

Gurman and MR need to do some digging on this story.

Do they actually believe Google is giving up half the phone market (closer to 60% actually) in the US for the paltry sum of $1 B a year, when they are spending 90$ B on AI infrastructure this year? If true, that will cause a crash in AI stocks,

There must be a quiet deal, for a lot more than $1 billion a year, to use the Google Cloud to host this. Don't tell me Apple. with their relatively tiny investment in datacenter, has this capacity.

This is a joke. I try to use as little services from Google as possible.

I would not trust anything that's being transmitted from Apple products to Siri from now on.

I share your sentiments. The only Google service I use is YouTube Premium, which is in desperate need of competition. That being said, I do not trust Google, and now Apple is giving me even more reason not to trust them. They did not have to go with Gemini.

How much will Apple charge for this? No way it will be free. If the main LLMs cost $20 or more a month, I would expect the same from Apple. And for a lot of that money to flow to Google cloud, who will no doubt be much of the hardware running Apple's 'private cloud'.

The number of people commenting on this thread who are hard of understanding, or unable/unwilling to read very clear information is actually quite frightening.
Many folks commenting here don't even realize that Apple isn't sharing the data, yet, sit here and comment about how their data is about to be stolen. It shows you how many people either can't or don't read the article.
