It's funny how I have a more than 5 year old MacBook Pro, which is struggling to do basic "pro" things like video editing and grading, and while I could afford to buy a new Mac, I simply have no options. The new MacBook Pro is not upgradeable, and the hassle Apple has put me through to replace something as mundane as the battery in mind makes me not want to buy an Apple laptop again.

What's left? An iMac Pro, maybe, which everyone keeps saying is a terrible choice due to it not being repairable or upgradeable either (requiring you to remove the single-use adhesive to do anything in the machine), and the story with the Vesa mount and the broken screen sure sound bad.

So... the new Mac Mini, which has increased in price, but is basically a laptop in a box, as it has no GPU. So for video editing, forget it.

Oh wait, external GPUs? Instead of saving you money, they cost more, and there are only like 2 options available. So forget it.

The Mac Pro? It's an obsolete computer for the price of a high-end workstation. At least they could have reduced the price to 50% to continue selling it, or if not, then discontinue it. But don't sell a computer that has lost much of its value over the years for the same price.

I guess I'll just keep my current Mac and continue to edit video at 2 frames per second for another year, yes?

People really need to stop comparing spec for spec with Apple products. It really doesn’t work that way.

Since Apple switched to Intel CPUs, that is exactly how it works...

The only thing differentiating an Apple computer & a Windows computer are the chassis & the OS...

So yes, one can easily hit up Newegg & spec up a dream machine, then take a step back & lament how Apple cannot meet the specs or the price...

I can justify the 'extra' cost of having macOS (which I totally prefer), and I realize there is a certain value in the Apple designed chassis, but at the end of the day, I can build a Hackintosh for cheaper than I can purchase a Mac...

And if I DO compare specs, the HackPro is always going to come in cheaper in cost than the Apple computer...

Yep. Same for the MacBook Pro. There is nobody editing photos and movies or creating websites and apps cordless. The weight and height of my 2012 non-retina MBP is perfect. Yes it’s twice as thick as the current ones and yes it is heavier but that doesn’t matter. It itsn’t too thick or heavy. The only reason I need a laptop is to quickly give a demo in another room or do some small things while abroad. 95% of the time my MBP is just attached to a screen on my desk. For pro work abroad you’ll need a huge battery. If I really would use my work’s 2017 MacBook Pro while abroad the battery is dead within 90 minutes.

I have both the 2015 and 2018 MacbookPro 15" and I just love how much more portable the 2018 one is. I can carry it around with one hand. It feels much more rigid. Love it, best Mac I've used.

I thought it looked cool.

It still does. It's one of the little joys that I have every day when I arrive in my office at work -- the little trash can just looks nice, I enjoy turning it on and I like the fact very much that you just can't hear it when it's working. Yeah, there have ALWAYS been more powerful computers out there, even back in 2013, even for less money.

And that is the only real problem with the Mac Pro: Like everything else from Apple, it's just too expensive for what it actually is. Nowadays this machine would even be too expensive if they sold it at the price of the Mac Mini. And the Mac Mini, is also too expensive for what it is -- it's just another Intel NUC, the only distinguishing factor is its proprietary operating system. And even the original Intel NUCs aren't cheap.

100% correct. And if you put Ubuntu or some other Linux flavor on that PC, you even get a faster, more versatile and more powerful UNIX-like operating system than macOS ever was or ever will be. And unless you're one of those "I use Adobe software for a living (preferably very visibly in a coffee shop all day long)"-types, you're better off with a Linux system anyway...

The way Apple has... is handling this Mac Pro situation is by far the biggest disgrace in post-Sculley Apple history. Massive, dark shame on all upper management responsible for this.

On the plus side, it has saved me from spending $5000+ on a computer.

When the iMac Pro came out, I LOL’d hard and considered suicide.

I have used Windows since v2.0 & Irix while it was relevant, & having used various versions of the Mac OS from the Apple II days thru the current date, I prefer macOS... And I kinda need it to run Final Cut... Plus, I can play WoW in macOS, but I do want to try running Windows in a VM for GTA VI...

It's a crime to continue to sell this garbage. Pull it until the new one is ready.
They're still selling the old non-retina MacBook Air too. Same thing. People might actually buy the thing, and be shocked when they find that their computer is using antique components.

How does it work, then? When the chips and parts inside a Windows PC and a Mac computer are basically the same (except for the fact that Apple solders everything to the system board then glues the chassis shut so you have no way of expanding and upgrading), and the two platforms pretty much run the same software for most people (from browsers to MS Office to Adobe CC, etc.), then why, exactly, is comparing a Windows PC and a Mac, spec-for-spec, not valid?

Who cares? Every "pro" user with half a brain moved to Windows years ago and they're using something that looks exactly like what everyone wants but Apple refuses to make... a tower with a traditional looking motherboard, hard drives and GPUs that you can upgrade, etc. Apple really needs to get their head out of their ass. They really kicked their pro customers in the balls.

I'm a huge fan of their iPads/iPhones/AppleTV/etc but when it comes to their desktop computers, they might as well just give up.

I quite like my 2013 trashcan, works great still with Mojave and huge Logic sessions. It’s portability ended up being a godsend compared to the older cheese-grater, traveling to work in different places I can put it and a HDD enclosure in a carry on bag easily- the cheese-grater has to go in a huge box.

It’s quiet too which is great in the studio.

Laptops don’t have enough power yet afraid.
Out of curiosity, would a new Mac mini be powerful enough for the traveling work?

I may be mistaken, but I have never considered a Mac to be a performance or value proposition. Has that ever been the case, that Apple was the value leader in performance?

The first generation was introduced 12 years ago, then updated 10, 9, 8, and 6 years ago.

No matter how many times Apple upgrades a crappy product, it is STILL a CRAPPY product.
Worse thing. It took them 12 years to realize that?

The 2006-2010 models were fine. 2012 was when the Mac Pro neglect started, with an extremely minor refresh that didn't even bring newer GPUs, built-in SATA III or USB 3.0, and no price drop.

Around that time also, Apple decided to forget everything they learned from the Power Mac G4 Cube 11 years earlier. And unsurprisingly, the 2013 Mac Pro has failed in many of the same ways. Simply inexcusable that it has taken over 5 years for Apple to remedy the situation.

Is this for work or pleasure? Because if it is for work, for goodness sake, build a PC workstation!

Yep. But also, this forthcoming modular Mac Pro will not get any pro users back. Because why would you invest in the new machine? Apple have a proven track record of abandoning an entire userbase for 5+ years. What's to say they won't do it again with this modular concept, which has somehow taken 2-3 years to develop and STILL isn't out.

If you use macOS exclusive software, you can get a Mac Mini and Razer Core X + any GPu you like. (more than 2 options).

If you use Adobe, just get a windows machine, it works better on windows anyway.

2013 Mac Pro was one of the worst investments we ever made. Fortunately we only bought one as a test run. We ended up sticking with 2010-2012 Mac Pros for workstations. Hopefully the workstations next year will be something worth buying for our studio.

Did you know my 2009 Mac Pro when fully upgraded is actually faster than my 2013 Mac Pro fully upgraded in many tasks. Go figure.

Depends on the tasks. Anything that is single-core oriented such as After Effects, Photoshop, etc. will perform better on your older Mac. Multithreaded tasks such as 3D rendering will benefit more on the 2013. Typically. Mileage may vary.

If the 1st gen was crappy, why do so many want Apple to bring it back?
SO MANY??
I do not think anybody that is PRO is interested in bringing back a Trash CAN model. Furthermore, they are actually buying old upgraded cheesgrater models or hackintoshes, since they are tired of waiting for Apple to come up with a decent new Mac Pro computer.

he was talking about the grater.
And I don't think anyone really wants a grater in the 2018 either.
1st gen was the cheesgrater.
2nd gen is the trashcan.

I think the "first gen" comment is about the cheesegrater, not the 2013 version.

This power can be had in a used PC Workstation for $200. No wonder MSFT is ahead.
Last weekend I went out and bought my cousin a "new to her" computer off Craigslist for $80 because her ancient first-gen Core Duo box died. I dropped a few extra hard drives lying around and its a fairly decent machine despite being from 2011. Since all she does is Illustrator and some PS it made sense to go with a Windows box than fork over a nice chunk of change for a over priced Mini.
