I wonder what that silvery thing is... liquid metal... ?
Looks like the kind of abstract image Apple often uses when they want to direct people's attention to the display in a new model, starting with the first OLED display in an iPhone, the X, and subsequent models, and the first OLEDs for the iPad, starting with the Pro models introduced in May 2024. Since this new iPhone SE 4 will contain an OLED display, instead of the LCD in the iPhone SE 3, maybe that's what the image is hinting at.

But describing it as a new member of the family? Maybe Cook means the OLED family.

The article says "There's quite a bit more space in a 6.1-inch device for a battery than there is in a 4.7-inch device, so it should come as no surprise that there will be a major improvement in overall battery life."

But 4.7 inches refers to the diagonal size of the active display area of the SE models prior to this new SE 4, not to the diagonal dimension of the entire front of the display, bezels included. As the article also points out, the size of the housing will increase only a bit. Removing the TouchID button and doing some other internal stuff are the main reasons the new SE can contain a battery that's a similar size as in an iPhone 14--not the increase in the diagonal dimension of the active display area to 6.1 inches or thereabouts.

Outside of a tiny minority of raucous users here on MacRumors, NOBODY wants a tiny a$$ phone anymore. I have access to both an iPhone 14 and an SE3 and the SE3 is just simply too small. TouchID is a different matter, but I get why Apple so sunsetting it. The fact is technology changed and not everything lasts forever.

You fogot to say "in my opinion". You don't speak for everyone.

Obviously you're not the target demographic then mate, the folk I know that like the small devices have never heard of macrumors nor would visit it if they did, they're just, you know, old folk or folk that don't like Face ID or big phones, or let's just call them normal folk.

Will the SE4 have a Physical SIM Slot ? , if no like the other US marketed Phone models 14 and up , will there be an INTERNATIONAL version of the SE4 ? (just like everywhere other than US 14 and above still maintains a SIM Slot) , is this just a retention thing that US Carriers are forcing Apple to do this , crazy having US Specific models....
iPhone 16 in Canada has a physical sim slot.

Agree. Most users want the biggest display without making the overall phone too big. This is a big reason for face ID instead of touch -- they get more display for the same size phone.
Whereas back in the land of the normal, people often go for the cheapest smallest phone they can buy - one where they can make & receive calls (shock horror) and check the occasional email.

Logical and decent upgrade to the economy iPhone lineage.

Which is fine of course, if you ignore the product fragmentation horror show that’s become synonymous under Cook’s financial ‘leadership’ (aka shareholder profit optimisation programme).

But Tim Apple bigging this up (or is that biggly?) as a major standalone product launch with a teaser like this, is pure cringe. I expect there’ll also be some disingenuous claim that this SE4 or whatever it’ll be branded, will be “Made* in the USA” which will be stamped on the box.

I had the original SE, and currently still using an iPhone 12. While the bigger screen is useful for occasional web browsing, I miss the small form factor of my old SE, as I can no longer reach buttons with just one hand on the bigger 12.

Hopefully there’ll still be previous versions available when I eventually upgrade.

You fogot to say "in my opinion". You don't speak for everyone.
The sentence literally started with "I". The reader would naturally infer that a stated preference or opinion on something is that persons and not everyone.

You must be fun to be around...how often do you say "in my opinion" when stating an opinion? "The pizza is delicious"...are you speaking for everyone?

(since we're nit-picking, it's "forgot"...not "fogot")

I can’t see Tim teasing the newest “budget” iPhone. As others have pointed out, they don’t even do this to the pro iPhones.

As for the newest member of the family, well, he could mean the newest member of the iPhone family. That would be disappointing though.

The top 10 selling phones in the past 3 years have been Samsung. "I guess no one wants iPhones and Apple should stop making phones." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_mobile_phones

View attachment 2482320
That’s wrong, that list only includes Samsung models for the last few years. The best selling phone last year was the iPhone 15, and Apple has 7 spots in the top 10. https://m.gsmarena.com/apple_dominated_the_bestselling_smartphones_list_of_2024-amp-66360.php

The point I was making is the logical fallacy. "No one wants small phones" is faulty. You cannot conclude that no one wants small phones if the market majority supports big phones. Same for Windows 11, just because Windows 10 is no longer (easily) available doesn't mean no one wants it. The market share numbers show otherwise. The only reason Windows 11 is gaining share is because it's the default option if you buy a new computer.

The fact that no major smartphone manufacturer offers a "small" phone these days suggests that there's not enough demand to justify offering one.

Incorrect. The wiki page you referenced is incomplete and doesn't include iPhones newer than 2020.

Was gonna say this, it was the 12 not the 14 that introduced Ceramic Shield.
I was going to say the same thing. 👏

Along with the “6E” reference that other’s already caught in the comment section. 📲

Macrumors should hire you all for proofreading. ✔️

I'm using a 12 mini with mag safe so I guess I got mag safe two years before everyone else according to this article. honestly love the form factor of the mini (so does my wife) but I can't think of a single time in the last 4+ years that I've seen another mini out in the wild. There's never going to be another mini sized phone until they can make it fold in half.

No, it’s for the market. Apple sold small iPhones and apparently it didn’t go well.
It's replacement isn't faring too well either. And by providing a cheap alternative for the pro max, it probably costs them more than the mini did. Which came out during lockdown btw, which everybody seems to forget. I had zero reason to upgrade a piece of hardware (my original SE) I barely used. Small phones are not primary devices. That's where it can go really bad for Apple when the minis start dying, that people will leave the whole ecosystem, no more sweat profits from them from services, no more mac and ipad sales for them. Looking at only the sales figures with small phones is a costly mistake.

To Mac Rumors team:

Many readers here (including myself), as well as some of your journalists, are from outside the US, so I think it would be nice to indicate metric equivalents whenever you mention US measurements (other than screen diagonal). For example in the article here: "the new model will be 5.78 inches (14.7 cm) tall, 2.82 inches (7.2 cm) wide, and a thickness of 7.8mm. Weight will increase just an ounce (28 g)". That way, everyone understands immediately without having to pull out the conversion calculator. Thanks guys.
Is it really that difficult for you to do the conversion in your head? I have to do it the other way around all the time. It is simple math, really.
