Hey, I feel totally the same way, but I'm a realist. Apple is a company just like any other, so they're gonna try to produce their low end machines with as few options and the least expensive standard parts that they can get away with. That means the less expensive glossy screens are probably gonna be the only choice on Apple's low end machines from now on.

The problem with this line of reasoning is that Apple's prices don't put them anywhere near "low end" as far as the computer market goes. I understand that we're paying a little more for OS X and Apple's attention to detail and their design savvy, but even Apple's so-called low-end machines carry mid- to high-range price tags compared to the rest of the PC world. My question is how much longer will Apple continue to charge those prices when they don't beat the options available to buyers of PCs.

I have bought Apple products for years and years, but if Apple cuts back the options for its buyers, they need to bring their prices down. One or the other, but it's completely unreasonable of Apple to cut options and quality and continue charging the higher prices.

remember the old days when the notebooks would get a 267 mhz upgrade and maybe a longer battery life and we would be super thrilled. Now it's like every six months we have a whole new toy to buy. I love it.

nearly double the performance of the x3100 is still crap

interestingly some results are out using centrino2 on X4500 chipset

Centrino 2 features faster processors up to 3.06GHz with a higher FSB (now 1066MHz from 800MHz in the current Santa Rosa platform). It also features newer integrated graphics, the GMA X4500.

In performance tests, the X4500 nearly doubled the performance of the X3100 in the current Santa Rosa platform. Processor performance benchmarks were less impressive, providing only small improvements in performance.

i know it might make good business sense to pay a lot of attention to their fastest selling computer and update it more often, but i wish Apple would fix the budget-PC type screens on the iMacs instead of updating the macbook every 5 minutes...

Refering to the buyer's guide, the latest release dates were:

05/06
11/06
05/07
11/07
02/08

Is it possible that Apple will clean it's stock with the back to school program and then release the new MacBook afterwards?

The MacBook is Apple's best selling computer by far, thats why its updated so much.

wtf morrisman, take it easy. that laptop mock-up is awesome. of course it's not practical, it's a fantasy. things off the assembly line will never look quite as beautiful as we dream they'll be. they're never practical enough.

well done deputylove8, good photochop. i like how you used imac elements to make it up. the alu/black look is amazing, i hope to see it incorporated into the macbooks.

Thanks a lot Commander Venus for the vote of confidence!:D
I have to admit, mock ups are just ...lets put it...our fantasies..haha..

I cant wait though for the release of the new macbook! hehehe. I've been waiting and saving since late last year!

:D:D:D

This is what I don't get.

Crap crap crap crap.

Apple wants you to buy a Macbook Pro for graphics? WHY?!?! :(

I mean, I have one (MBP) but what the heck are they afraid of?? The majority of apple users are now clueless mac users that want iPhoto and cracked chinese iPhones not PRO users so why do they insist that the small fractional PRO user might buy a cheap machine for motion (note that apple crippled first and 2nd gen macbooks from 171% OPENGL Macbook Leopard to a crappy 71% with the X300.

I mean really, the PRO user is such a small base and if they had any sense they would release a mini and MB with a good graphic card and go after some gamers while the PROS would throw the MB's in their backpacks in addition to a MBP. The gaming community is huge and they would do well.

The on board GMA stuff is garbage and it drives me nuts that Apple is so paranoid that a few pros might buy them and not the PRO, again, apple, are you listening? The stock and market goes up because of your iphones, ipods and imacs.

I am sick of Apple screwing with the pros.

iMacs=Glossy, no MATTE thus no color
MB/MINI no graphics = no games or motion
iMACS crappy firewire (not texas instruments like MBP and MAC PRO) = bad audio recording.

Time for apple to grow up and release what the market demands, then release a 4 core MAC BOOK PRO and that way the pro's will have a rendering system with desktop performance. Heck, add a 10,000 RPM hard drive. Make the MBP a PRO DESKTOP replacement and the mini and MB a gaming and temporary texas instrument audio, video, gaming machine.

For once, build the best computers and let the cards fall as they may.

Which is the cart and which is the horse? Maybe it sells so well because Apple updates it so frequently.

I maintain that desktop sales are lagging partly because of Apple's lethargic update schedule on the Mini and the iMac.

I just hope the damn thing is going to be able to stand up to physical abuse

I've always wondered why Apple doesn't target releases for the back-to-school and December holiday seasons. Releases in January certainly don't fit either of those. My guess is that Apple releases products when they are ready (or the next Tuesday after they are ready) and don't fret which month it is.

If this rumor is true, they might hit the school season this time.

they do it with the ipods, don't they?

yes.
just like iPod classic turns silver:(
if I still want a white MB should I buy it now?

ya.. even i prefer white. Apple should offer white atleast for the macbooks. i do not see it happening though, in any future physical update. they're moving away from the white.
i don't think anything is available in white except for the macbooks anymore.
maybe the airport express.. and the chargers.
:rolleyes::(

AU Optronics

My wife works for AU Optronics and handles customer service for one of their major European clients (bigger than Apple).

I hope to God Apple doesn't use too many displays from AUO. They have got some of the ********* production facilities in all of China. One product for the aforementioned Client was supposed to have an acceptable defect rate of 0.01%. Once the display went into production, however, they discovered that the defect rate was actually somewhere around 15%.

To make matters worse, AUO is a subsidiary of BenQ, and that company has got some of the worst customer support on earth. If a bunch of Macbook Pros get bad displays, and we customers return them to Apple, Apple will then have to go to AUO to get them replaced or fixed and AUO, being the offspring of BenQ, will resist with all they have got. It'll get expensive for Apple, which in turn will probably mean we end users get the shaft.

Or not. I'm obviously biased :D

Hmm. I really think that these kinds of features are best left in the desktops for now. Give it a little bit more time.

Reason A: The price would be horrendous.
Reason B: The machine would cook - they are already hot enough.
Reason C: It would possibly be heavier and thicker.
Reason D: Is this really why people buy laptops?

I think they should pack in integrated in the low end model, and in the midrange model offer an nVidia GeForce 8400GT dedicated card with 256MB of RAM.

And for the lowend make that a BTO option.

That way people who want the smaller formfactor arent completely stuck with integrated craptastic graphics for when they would like to game.

The 8400GT seems to be a popular graphics choice in Dell, HP, and Sony laptops, as it packs quite a decent graphics punch, and runs circles around all integrated solutions.

AMD is starting to have very decent ATI integrated graphics, but thats only on AMD platforms, not Intel, as AMD doesnt really develop Intel chipsets anymore.

new design for mbp in feb/march?
we have may dude ... in which timezone do u live ;)?

My personal suspicion is that Apple release new computers at times of low demand, to make it easier to get the stock out, sort out early bugs, apply revisions, etc etc. There's a gigantic amount of work associated with a new release, and it's difficult to do it at the same time as a period of high sales.

If a new macbook was released just in time for a major buying season, and it turned out to have a major problem, Apple would be severely affected. Release at a low buying season, and not too many machines have to be recalled or fixed.

Also psychologically, release just *after* a major buying season means that buyers of the old machine will be already thinking of their next purchase / upgrade.

Steve is a master of psychology and of creating a sense of 'I want' in the buying public.

Please just give it a 15 inch screen and SOME SORT OF VIDEO CARD...

We should not have to pay $1800 for a decent screen and graphics processing.

Im afraid that yes you should. We're talking Apple here. They dont want or need to be just another low buck computer manufacturer. Im pretty sure they arent interested in that.

According to this report from April, Apple put in an order for 13'' aluminum enclosures. Why would they order them so early if they intended to release in Q3?
