According to this report from April, Apple put in an order for 13'' aluminum enclosures. Why would they order them so early if they intended to release in Q3?

The MacBook may very well get updated in June with Montevina, and even a redesign, but remember that Apple tries to differentiate their products as much as possible to maximize profit... So, in June both the MB and MBP may get updated, but the MB will still keep the older CCFL screen... Some people will then buy the MBP just because it has the LED screen.

Later, Apple updates the screen to LED in Q3...

Sounds very Apple to me.....

Or, Apple waits with Montevina and updates both MB and MBP in Q3. Less likely.

all these rumors about the aluminum case coming soon: I will only believe it when it happens because

1. these rumors have been around since at least september of last year when it was said that this update will happen soon
http://news.worldofapple.com/archive...inium-macbook/

2. the so called visual proof ended up being proved to being photoshoped pictures

3. apple will most certainly want to distinguish its laptops visually so i don't see both macbooks and macbook pros having the same cases.

If ... IF it is indeed a Q3 release, I'm guessing it will have to be early Q3 - like July - to snag the college students. Apple will not miss that opportunity.

wtf morrisman, take it easy. that laptop mock-up is awesome. of course it's not practical, it's a fantasy. things off the assembly line will never look quite as beautiful as we dream they'll be. they're never practical enough.

well done deputylove8, good photochop. i like how you used imac elements to make it up. the alu/black look is amazing, i hope to see it incorporated into the macbooks.

What would be awesome is if Apple would have contests for photo shoppers to submitt their dream designs to them. Some of the designs I've seen here are simply amazing! :):apple::)

Mac is more commercial based, where companies like Dell, HP, Lenovo or MPC receive vast majority of sales during the Gov or SLE buying seasons so their new products timing is set to August/September (end of Gov buying season) and May/June (SLE buying season). There are lots of factors which will influence reals schedule....

Actually Apple sells far less computers to companies (EDIT: as a percentage compared to Dell and HP for example), they sell most of their machines to consumers and education who are both seasonal.

It will be July as that is when Montevina will be shippable.

nearly double the performance of the x3100 is still crap

It is perfectly good enough if you aren't playing high end games or doing Pro work on it.

Apple wants you to buy a Macbook Pro for graphics? WHY?!?! :(

So they make a higher profit (which as a company is their main aim) and don't have a confusing line-up so that their customers who generally don't understand technical specifications don't get confused/intimidated.

I have a Macbook to use and an old IBM Thinkpad x41.

The macbook screen is just LOUSY even compared to the ancient Thinkpad one that only does 1024x768. I am not even a "graphics" person, and my very untrained eye finds the Macbook screen terrible -- as much as I try to like it.

I love OS X and hate Mac hardware. It's either too expensive for my needs at the high end (macbook pro and Mac pro while nice are just overkill for me), or overpriced for the quality on the lower end stuff.

Here's hoping the Macbook redo puts in a better quality screen...

Looks like I'm in for an expensive 2008!!¨

First the iPhone is going to be released in Switzerland. I already own an iPhone, but the "version 2", provided it meets some of the speculation around it, will absolutely make it to my pocket...

Second this whole new rumors surrounding Notebooks...

I am a MacBook C2D 2 Ghz owner (MB 2,1) and start feeling the limits of 13.3". Fact is I started working in an architect office and using software on a 13.3" screen... I need more real estate.

Updating a MB is easy for Apple, the basic specs remain the same. Change materials, keep keyboard, change screen and some of the innards and the job is done. I mean, a new MB will not change dramatically (size, weight and keyboard-wise) compared to the actual. New casing and a nice speed bump...

What I am looking for, and awaiting anxiously, is the new MacBook Pro. Specifically: new keyboard, new closing mechanism (magnetic), improved perfromance and a design which is in line with the rest of the current generation Macs (including the possible new MB).

I hope Apple will release the MBP and the MB simultaneously, or close one another, because the computer which needs the most improvement is the MBP (unless of course they give me a 17" MacBook, in which case I wouldn't need a MBP).

I still dream that Jobs will go on stage at WWDC and announce the new iPhone along with the new MacBook Pro (a landmark event in more ways than one)...

But on the other hand leaving me more time to get my finances on track for those two purchases might be a good idea as well.

In september I will fly to NYC and will most certainly pay a visit to an Apple Store there. I hope that, by then, Apple will have released a new, more powerful and "newly designed" 17" notebook on which I can get my work done.

I wonder if it will have a video card in it instead of integrated graphics...

I doubt it. Apple will probably stick with the integrated video card on the MacBook but they could surprise us.

I am always surprised by the speculation that apple would update the MB and MBP at the same time. When has apple ever done something so radical? To me it seems like they usually update 1 product line at a time and it is usually only an incremental update - not the major design changes that frequent these message boards.

Now I agree the MB and MBP are long overdue for some change, but I just don't see apple doing it all at once.

Penryn MacBooks and MacBook Pros came on the same day.

Would definitely like to see a June announcement, July release. Any later seems like it'd be too late for the school season (College starts mid August essentially). I'm just not sure I want a first gen product of a new design. I'd actually rather want a refresh now since I'll be buying one for my sister this summer :)

The other "major" upgrade needs to be the long awaited blu-ray drive, or I think I will wait for the next upgrade.
I do not expect the MacBook to get a Blu-ray drive until it uses the Calpella platform because one of the features listed is:

an Intel Mobile chipset with Intel's graphics technology that will allow for optimized decoding/encoding and editing/playback of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video used in Blu-ray Discs and HD 1080p video, optimized for MPEG-2 (DVD) video playback and editing.

Why is it always the LCD that givers it away? How come it's never "Apple orders 3 million laptop batteries", or "Apple orders 3 million logic boards"?

Anyway, looks like I'll be holding off on a MBP purchase until I see what the "new" Macbook has to offer.

please an update in mid june....
i am in hong kong till the beginning of july...
and here i can get my mbp 30% cheaper than in germany o_O
steve please... dont only focus on the iphone

Hope not

I hope this isn't true. After owning a PowerBook G4 12", a laptop whose wifi range could be measured in inches, I vowed to never buy another metal-encased Mac laptop. The PB couldn't see my house's wifi network in the basement; the new plastic-encased MacBook can see networks halfway across the neighborhood.

I have been using a PowerBook G4 17" for more than 4 years (dying to upgrade but I always need the £ for something else) I have travelled with the thing all over the place, drop it twice, once from more than a meter high against a marble floor. An the things looks like new -- well it does have a dent but that's about it. I am amazed at how bloody rugged the aluminum enclosure is.
I hope all the line gets it -- and I also hope they update the form factor as I'm getting ready to get a new one.

Same here....

A 13.3" MBP?! I would kill for one of those!! Oh my, how I miss my old 12" PB. :(

Oh well, at least I can still dream about a 12" MBP. Are you reading this Apple? People are willing to do anything for a small Pro-line laptop.

Not a day nor business trip goes by that I don't regret selling mine. The air hasn't clicked with me (beautiful but ever so slightly gimmicky), and I seem to find myself gravitating towards ebay at least once a week to browse the current 12" G4 stock.

no aluminum!

the white and black plastic of the macbook makes it stand out in the crowd and is a clear identifier, no aluminum, please!! plus, the aluminum cuts down the reception of wireless networks, so there's a functional reason to just not do it.

but of course it will come out mid-late summer, just in time for those back to school computer shopping sprees
