Okay... looking forward... think it would be sad if they are cancelling the 12" PB

As the owner of a Rev.A Powerbook 12"...I don't think I'd mind if it was replaced with a thinner widescreen version, but it's too cool a form factor to drop. That said, roll on the HD 15"!!!

I don't think this Photo Pro is in any way a Photoshop competitor. I think it's a pro-style photo management app. Powerful cataloguing capabilities (when you back up it will tell you where a certain photo is, keeping track of it wherever you move it), a digital light-box thingy offering greater performance and visual capabilities than iPhoto. More RAW focussed editing abilities (similar to the Camera Raw part of Photoshop and Elements) and better colour/light/exposure etc editing capabilities.

Something akin to iPhoto, Elements and Extensis Portfolio combined.

Cataloging features that let Pro users keep track of large slide inventories would be well appreciated. I know more than a few professional photographers that have libraries of tens of thousands of slides taken over their careers. If there would be a way to tag each image with "storage location" and be able to sort by that feature, that would be nice. You can probably do that now with Keywords, but having a real feature (with more specific design) would be nice. Since professionals also might have several slides "checked out" of their collection at any given time (such as being sent to a magazine for use in an issue) getting the PhotoPro to keep track of this (either by putting a little flag on the photos that are out or by making them fade out a bit) would be nice. PhotoPro could integrate with Address Book and iCal sort of like how Delicious Library does.

These features would appeal to the hardcore photographer with massive numbers of photos. Actually getting all those images into the computer and into PhotoPro would still be a major task, but one the professional could pawn off on a summer intern. :D

I just looked - the event doesn't happen until 2am tomorrow morning here (GMT+10). Great, another "crucial assignment due on Friday but must spend Thursday researching new Apple announcements" situation, much like the last two announcements  :p :(

Yeah I know - the last one was especially tough. But it meant I could zap off a Christmas list to my folks long before they could even wake up (it just had a picture of the new iPod and the words "I want this for Christmas pleeeeaseee....." on it. Yeah, I'm too old for big XMas gifts from the folks but it's the only way I'll ever be able to afford one and I even offered to subsidise some of the cost with my student discount and meagre savings.

But now, the black rings under my eyes are just getting ridiculous.

At least this one's at 2am and not 3am....

If they are canceling the 12", it will only be temporary. There is simply no reason for Apple not to have a product in the ultraportable category. Maybe they're working on that one, but it will be among the first Intel-based Macs using some new ultralow-voltage Intel mobile CPU.

Agreed - except that he's running the Amiga that would be out today if Commodore hadn't crashed and burned! (interjecting a different "religious" argument there!)

You made me laugh, thanx :D

The Apple Store backend is down for maintenance right now.. c'mon updates!!
It's up for me. I doubt they'd pull it down 2-3 hours before the announcement. My guess it'll go down about 11:30-11:45 EDT.

Edit: Oh, I guess you mean the order processing side. I could see that happening. C'mon updates! :)

Yeah, I think so too. Something akin to bringing in a massive portfolio into your PowerMac and then backing up to multiple DVD's or external drives etc but when you delete the main file from the computer it leaves behind a small thumbnail that allows you to see where you've put that photo (which disk, which folder, maybe combined with EXIF data) but it would have to be quite small, just a visual indicator. Apple could also build in some sort of automated backup system for the Photo Pro library.

I don't know if these are feasible, just tossing ideas into the ring (hang on, that sounds a bit suss) just giving my opinions on a few things.

Apple will be hosting another media event on Wednesday, October 19th, 2005. The event takes place in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center at 12:00 Noon Eastern time.

...and this and you can probably figure out when it is for you, in your time zone.

(Sorry, Jacobhase, just getting sleepy and trying to figure out if I should stay up until...just a sec...ONE AM my time zone.)

<edit> I guess a half dozen people already commented on this. Well, the link I posted is a good one to bookmark. It comes in handy for these events. ;)

Ibook?

Ibook 14" shipping times are up. They couldn't have cameras on powerbooks without one ibook model having them too,no? But then it was just upgraded and that's not a PRO model?

I agree with Chundles and physics_gopher (hey, I'm married to a theoretical physicist --and I just got him switched to Mac this past week).

Some of the most contentious and frankly, confusing threads on any photography forum centers around image management, raw processing and workflow. For example, my D2x generates 20Meg RAW+jpeg files and I still depend on bracketing my exposures ("grew up" using film). I use 3 independent programs in my workflow (Photo Mechanic - Nikon Capture - PSCS2), for me, this optimizes quality, but boy, it is not very efficient and I am still very unhappy with my management options. Not to mention my near-constant paranoia (and 3 independent hot-swap 400GB HDD backup array) over losing my work.

I would be thrilled if Apple could make a positive contribution to this situation.
