Because the first wave of M1 devices - the Air, 13" MBP and Mini - are now 18 months old and ripe for an update. OTOH, if it follows the M1 pattern, the M2 Pro/Max/Ultra won't follow for some time yet, and the MP will need at least an Ultra.

I really need to replace my personal 2013 rMBP because of excessive battery swelling. I'm not sure, but I imagine it's starting to become a safety hazard and I don't really want to accidentally set my house on fire.

The MacBook Air is more than enough for my needs but I just wouldn't buy it at this point. As you say it's 18 months old and it either requires an update or a lower price, both of which would work for me.

I'm hoping for an announcement today because then I can at least plan what to do next. It's not a machine I really need on a daily basis, so I can wait, but it's getting tiresome.

I could use some AirPods Pro 2 if they don’t have the new MacBook Air ready yet :) I’ll even settle for a new HomePod
Eh, I wouldn't hold your breath... AirPods Pro 2 will likely be its own event due to WWDC mostly being about software. I bet that it'll be only smaller things like new watch bands maybe.

Like the good ol' days... :D

I haven't read all the replies in this thread...

Has anyone made the comment "Amazon doesn't have to shutdown their website to add new products" yet?

🤣
In case anyone has made that comment... Amazon has a ton of placeholder listings. It gets really annoying. I'll relate a semi-personal story about this.

One of my colleagues is a well-known academic in the field I work in. I was at a dinner with this guy, and another colleague sitting at the table congratulated him on his new book. That was met with a blank look.

Colleague 2: "Hey, congrats on getting that new book published!"
Colleague 1: "What new book?"
C2: "Your new textbook."
C1: "Huh?!?"
C2: "Your new edition for your XYZ textbook."
C1: "What are you talking about? It's not out yet, and won't be out for quite some time."
C2: "Well, it's already listed on Amazon."
C1" "That's news to me, since we haven't even finished writing it yet."

So Amazon had a placeholder for this book before it was even completed, and it was several YEARS later before it was actually sold at Amazon.

M2 Mac Mini and Macbook Air is what I'm expecting.

M2 Macbook Pro 13" (in a chassis the size of the old 12-inch Macbook) would be awesome.

Mac Mini with an M2 Pro would be even more awesome, but I highly doubt that, maybe later this year.

I understand back in the day they took the store down because that was how they actually updated it. But they do it now because it's free advertising. MacRumors and every other Mac blog will write about it and it gets fans hyped. But that's all it is: marketing. They don't actually need to take it down to update anymore, lol.

IMO- the odd thing about this kind of thinking is that the fans are already as hyped up as they can possibly be around all events where new stuff could be announced... so they seem to need a "store is down" gimmick (to them) the least. Does the store being down add anything more to fan wants to buy or not buy new stuff from Apple today? At least I would doubt it. Fans are easiest to sell because they are ready to buy at any time. They don't need marketing gimmicks because they are already so plugged in they likely know if they are buying or not buying... and even mostly WHAT they are buying (details) before whatever it is is actually revealed.

Does the store going down inspire the non-fan masses? Is there enough agile press about it publishing that news to reach those masses in these few hours it is down? Is there enough time for many of the masses to notice that press, become interested/curious, and then dig in a little harder to whatever is going to be announced later? I don't know.

IMO- this store down thing is marketing tradition. I fully suspect Apple has something measured that says this particular action drives more new revenue than the revenue lost by turning off the ability to buy direct from Apple during these hours.

I have to think that the vast majority of buyers of whatever Apple is about to announce have no clue the store is down this morning... nor any sense of whatever is coming... and will come to discover the new goodies AFTER the big reveal and/or in the days or months ahead. Perhaps this tradition is especially of "us"- the most rabid fans who likely least need it because we would be just as ready to "buy now" whether the store is down for a few hours or is instantly updated with the new stuff announced at any given event.

"We" used to sling around some rationale for Apple going Silicon so that they could step up the pace of Mac upgrades vs. being stuck on Intel's "slow" once-a-year upgrade cycles at best. Other than witnessing M1 ruling the roost for upwards of 2 years soon, it seems unlikely that (that same) "we" could get behind a 3-4 year cycle... especially while watching the old choice of tech brains getting updated with new generations several times over each of those 3-4 year periods.

My own guess is that M-whatever is supposed to be on an upgrade cycle in lockstep with A-series increments but covid-related events threw initial delays into that plan. As soon as the productive world gets fully back on its feet, I fully assume M-next chips every year if A-next chips hit every year.

That offered though: Apple does have very obvious examples of rolling out Intel Macs and then selling them "as is" for many years. Just look at that Intel Mac Mini in the store right now. I'll simply hope that there is zero planning to get on a 3-4 year cycle in general. In exchange for getting to feel like we have "latest & greatest" for longer than a few months typical of this industry, it would seem that things would seem pretty boring rolling into years 2-3-4... and some envy of the former rolling out several generations of new tech during the time might press the defenders to have to work too many volunteer hours and come up with all kinds of creative spin why 3-or-4-year-old tech is better than new.
A series is supporting essentially one device - iPnone / iPad.

M1 is doing it all in various formations. I sense we are going to see M1 xxxx depending on the device it’s supporting - ie M1 vs M1 Ultra.

Imagine if Amazon went down for hours every time they needed to add a new product.

Stores goes down because
-M2 mcbook air
-M2 mac mini
-M2 macbook pros
-Mac Pro
-Pro Studio display
-iMac Pro

wow so many...come on guys
As long as everyone realizes that the “M2” is not going to be 3 nm and is basically going to be a rejiggered M1 with extra GPU cores on 5nm+. And you’re not getting more than the MacBook Air and possibly a revised iMac to take Apple into BTS season with refreshed products. The rest of that list is going to be untouched today. Maybe a Mac Pro preview, but won’t be out until November.

It’s a Marketing/PR/generate buzz/capture eyeballs thing now…we all know there isn’t really a technical reason that makes this necessary in this day and age.

The number of people in this thread setting themselves up for disappointment later today is high. Temper your expectations, there’s really very little being introduced today.

Quit being a buzz kill man ;) Lots of us like the excitement. Plus, bringing the store down before events has been tradition for Apple.

if we get an M2 Mac Mini i'll be buying that but not getting my hopes up.

even if there is a new Air i won't bother with it if it's still only 13". going to need a 14" minimum. ideally 15 or 16"
Yeah, I'm waiting on the M2 Mac Mini as well. Instabuy if it makes an appearance.

New hardware is always exciting, don’t get me wrong, but some people think apple is going to parade out multiple products and they are going to be VERY disappointed. I expect 2022 MacBook Air and a Mac Pro preview and that’s it. I’m merely trying to preempt the wailing and gnashing of teeth by those who expect too much from Apple. Always happy to be pleasantly surprised.
