Yep, no wonder. Apple hasn't paid much attention to the Mac. Just look at the Buyer's Guide on MR and it's pretty depressing how outdated across the board all Macs are. Pretty embarrassing IMO.

which shows quite clear that they don't care about the mac anomore. An outdated iPhone? No way. Every year there is a new model with a new processor. If they would show that kind of commitment to the mac too it would eayily outsell almost every other vendor.

Sale is falling, what a shocker! Anyone buying any of today's macs unless they are in desperate need of an OS X computer are stupid. Every Mac across the board are overpriced and old, except the MacBook, which is only for casual use. I'm spending this summer contemplating if I should start supporting the pc market again and wave goodbye to Apple. They are too lazy with their updates these days and only Apple themselves consider the current iMac 'new' which they claim on their website. Apple is starting to feel like a big hoax and a rip-off.

Nothing new here. Macs have always been overpriced and out-of-date compared to the PC market. I knew that when I bought my first PowerBook 12 years ago - nothing has changed. No-one honestly buys a Mac because of its performance and if they say otherwise they are either lying or they are deluded.

People buy Macs because they prefer OS X or they are wedded to the programs/workflows/ecosystem offered by the platform.

It hurts us Mac users because deep down we know PC makers are now making great looking hardware for less and Windows and Linux has essentially caught up and in many ways surpassed OS X.

iPhone sales/apps account for over 60% IIRC of Apple's income. Apple can afford to ignore Mac sales and still be one of the most profitable companies. You'd think Apple is trying to lock people into their ecosystem, yet only iTunes ties the iOS devices to a computer. And that can be a Windows.

If the classic non retina macbook pro from 2012! is any indication, Apple can easily sell the current models for half a decade and people would still buy it, just because its Apple.

Maybe they want to get rid of the outdated machines first...

Gary

they want to get rid of units till the end of fiscal quarter to prepare cleaner and easier report. It is always easier to make reports when the stock is empty or near to it.

After that they will start a new fiscal quarter with new sales in it and will show new income state for stockholders.

That's what happens when you have almost 2 year old Hardware at 2 years ago pricing....either you drop the price or drop a new version....

People will move to competitors either for a lower price / same specs or a newer model!

If you have one theres little reason to get a new one - there are few applications out there that need more horse power.. They're also (Whilst lovely) stupidly expensive so you loose massive market share and people wait much longer to "upgrade".

I'm wondering if anyone over at Apple is really surprised by this? No updates on the machines and terrible reviews for El Capitan in the App store don't sound like they've given Macs a lot of love.

I'm also going to go out on a limb here and predict that releasing a new rMBP with only 1 kind of port, (even if there are 4 USB-C) is not going to go over well with the I-hate-dongles crowd. Apple seems to have lost their way as far as making things easy and simple to use. It's one thing to push the next great thing, it's another to make it expensive and inconvenient to use it. One of the only things Windows does right is backward compatibility. If they made a new Mac with USB-C AND USB 3.0 and an SD card slot, I'd probably buy one.

If I have to buy dongles, or throw away all my hard drives and thumb drives, and buy all new backup drives, I'm going to pass. I'm sure I'm not the only one on the planet that feels this way. We'll see if the numbers six months from now back that up.

What, really?
Powerbook G4: They dropped VGA in 2003(!). It didn't go well with I-hate-DVI crowd. Oh wait yes it did. (Mind you, in 2003, DVI was not at all as widespread)
MacBook Pro Unibody: They dropped FW400/DVI in 2008. It didn't go well with I-hate-adapters crowd. Oh wait yes it did.
MacBook Pro UB 2n gen: Dropped Express/34 in 2009. It didn't go well with I-hate-tb-adapters crowd.
MacBook Pro Retina: They dropped Matte/FW/LAN/Optical-drive in 2012. It didn't go well with I-hate-dongles crowd. Oh wait yes it did.

It's a laptop, if you use it as a workstation that's super-fine because you can, but its still a portable computer first.

Also, it would make no sense to drop the Thunderbolt2 port yet, USB 3.0 isn't there yet to replace it.

Apple laptops are/were usually bleeding edge because they were the first to drop the old and introduce new.
None of the changes I outlined were at all convenient for the "I-hate-something" crowd, yet all models so far did fine.

The only thing I agree with you is lack of updates.

As far as my prediction goes, something new should be boiling at Apple because if its not, they're done for.

Desktop computers/Laptops aren't the priority for Apple anymore. In fact, it hasn't been for quite some time. They're spending less and less time on OSX, there's no dedicated team for OSX anymore. iPhones/iPads are what they care about most and sell, so I don't think they even care too much that Mac sales have dropped, probably after 5 years or a decade there will be no OS X.

Hearing from upperclassmen, the curriculum focuses on Linux, so having that is a must. I just really like how simple it is to partition another OS on a Mac. Also as a current Windows user, I'm pretty fed up with updating drives, too many bugs, etc. Overall, I just like how reliable and stable MacBooks are, but I don't know if it's worth taking my chances with another PC.

Don't combine Windows with the hardware you won't be using Windows.

To make your life simple just buy with Intel (processor and NIC's) and nVidia if you want discrete graphics or even better go here https://system76.com/ and pick one

Another part of the problem for me is understanding which mac's to look at? It's fairly obvious that the Air models are end of life and should be avoided which leaves the pro and macbook. The macbook is lovely but way too expensive and it's hard to see where it fits in within the pro range.

Just like all Apple products these days there is no logical range any more. Air this, Pro that, SE, S, not pro or air.. It's a total mess.

But that's the point. In the past, Apple machines have been way better. Now they are not. It is not unreasonable to expect the best and up to date when you pay premium prices.
No, in the past, Apple machines were not really "way" better. That's your value perception. Sure they jump started the ultra book trend, but other companies followed suit very quickly. Sounds like you just want shinier newer stuff, and that's fine. If Apple doesn't give you the value you need, then don't buy Apple. Simple as that. My point is, there's no point in whining and moaning in wanting Apple to be just another racer to the bottom like Asus.

I recently bought a Lenovo miix, a clone of surface pro. Instead of moaning and groaning for Apple to make a hybrid or for Microsoft to include the keyboard with their surface, I simply vote with my wallet and buy the product that I want.

With bash coming to Windows I'm thinking of swapping OS. Apple doesn't care anymore if it's not an iPhone or anorexic thin Mac.

When I switched to OS X originally back in 2004, one of my reasons for doing so was because of Bash/UNIX and the ability to run commercial apps when I needed them. If Microsoft pull off its Linux subsystem in Windows 10, it will negate one of Apple's major trump cards at least among developers and power users.

The latest numbers from market research firm IDC reveal that Mac sales experienced a slight year-over-year decline in the second quarter, dropping to 4.4 million from 4.8 million during the year-ago period.

Apple fell behind ASUS to finish as the fifth-largest PC vendor by shipments worldwide, with 7.1 percent market share through late June. Apple had 7.4 percent share in the second quarter of 2015 comparatively, according to IDC's data.

The decline can as typical be attributed partially to seasonal fluctuations and increased competition, but many prospective buyers are patiently impatiently waiting for Apple to release its next-generation MacBook Pro and other refreshed Macs.

Apple has not updated the MacBook Pro in over 400 days. The hope, supported by multiple rumors, is that it will release a redesigned MacBook Pro with faster Skylake processors and Thunderbolt 3 with USB-C in the second half of 2016. The top-of-the-line model could sport AMD's new 400-series Polaris graphics chip.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple will launch two thinner and lighter 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models in the September-December quarter. The notebooks are expected to feature a new OLED touch bar positioned above the keyboard, Touch ID, and hinges made from metal injection molding.

Overall PC sales totaled an estimated 62.4 million worldwide in the second quarter, a year-over-year decline of 4.5 percent, as the PC market continues to decline. Nevertheless, North American PC shipments increased for the first time in five quarters, reflecting the strength of the U.S. dollar and "relative market stability."

Gartner has also released similar worldwide PC shipment data for the second quarter.

The Apple bubble of arrogance is touching the pin of reality.

I'm down to my last Apple product, my 2009 Mac Pro. iPhone 6 gone, replaced by Nexus 6p, AppleTV gone, replaced by Nvidia Shield TV, MacBook gone, replaced by Chromebook Pixel, Apple 27 inch display - bye bye, replaced with LG Ultra Wide display.

As soon as the desktop dies, that's it - I'm done. And no I'm not paying $3,000 for 2013 tech! What the hell happened to this company?

Okay maybe you should update your signature and then Apple can update their Macs.

Sheesh – these are some exquisitely ugly devices…

Agree, there are much better builders out there, contemplating to get a BeQuiet! Completely silent system :)

http://www.bequiet.com/en/case/546 - I will be able to swap out components that are not soldered onto the motherboard or proprietary instead waiting for Apple to upgrade.

Currently I have an iMac 27inch i7 3,4GHZ, 16GB/2TB - it has its difficulties performance wise - and no, not video/music editing, just SoHo stuff.

Maybe add the LG display

Why has the author of this article used an image of a MacBook instead or a MacBook Pro?
