Lucky me I can't imagine an scenario where I would need to charge the phone and listen to music with headphones at the same time.

Was this sarcasm? At an airport/on a long flight? On a long drive if your vehicle lacks bluetooth or you want better sound quality? In my case, there are many scenarios.

You sure the adapter contains a DAC ? ... my assumption would be the lightning port provides an analogue signal once the adapters plugged in ... i'll have to look at the tear down of a 6/6s to see the specs of the amplifier used there.

*** guess i'm wrong, digital only :) ***

Any DAC costing more than $1 is a good DAC !!!

Yeah.

If I have time, Ill dig through the actual MFI dev doco

And miss out selling you a $50 adapter........

no...they gave us the absolute minimum , and would like us to purchase a $50 adapter, for home, work etc so they get further cuts from the sale.

Tim has no idea about user experience, he only cares about $$$$$$ so will sign up to anything hat brings in additional profits. The trend seems to be adapters. Looks like the new Macbook pros will follow... they already did it with the macbook, now iPhone.....ipad will be next.
What adapter? The point is that they don't have one.

Upselling at its best - Phil for President.

It's a work-around NOT a solution.

What the hell?

If your *really* getting an iPhone 7 and you get a brand new set of Earbuds and a adapter -- I seriously don't see the beef at all.

Personally as a bodybuilder, runner and biker I've been CRAVING wireless.

90% of this so called bitching is so overblown.

Apple is no longer the innovative tech company it was under Steve Jobs. Apple is no longer forced to innovate to compete with the likes of Samsung, Motorola, and Sony as it had in the past. Now its about how to maximize profits with the least innovative devices on the market. The Iphone jack is a clear example of it. Consumers are now being forced to buy and carry around more adatpors and more accessories to be able to use the new iphones. RIP Apple.

Apple Fan, for decades, here. Apple is currently in profit mode. They don't care about us. They care about total global sales. We were their rock. Now we are their lacky. I might buy. I will give them that. The competition isn't so much better. But I know from experience they can do so much better. I think Apple is holding back. They want profit not customers who care. This is all now a game of the market. In the past we mattered. We don't matter anymore. I am so torn these days. New is only a feature for satisfying growing the global market. Old is only a comfort for keeping the old market engaged. Just enough and their future for products is all that matters. If google had a soul, I would jump.

Its like saying all intel CPUs are not expansive. You pay for what you get, and Audiophiles don't pay top dollar for average DACs in a premium package. As in anything, the more you pay the better it is, DACs included. Ive got a number of DABs, and you can clearly tell the difference between each DAC, and you pay for the R&D costs of that DAC, not how much it costs to produce it.

Top end of audiophile is now moving to FPGA anyway.

No, you don't necessarily pay for what you get. "Audiophiles" buy "DACs" that are a packaged product - with power supply, other circuitry such as a digital interface, connectors, and amplifiers - all in a box.

Ultimately there's a semiconductor DAC inside. There are not that many vendors of semiconductor DAC chips. AT THE CHIP LEVEL there's no reason a good DAC costs more than one that's mediocre. It's what the engineer puts around it at the product (i.e. box) level that differentiates one packaged DAC product over another. That's where the cost comes in. Along with enormous margins.

Again, at the chip level, DACs are not expensive. DAC dies are tiny, the semiconductor process is extremely mature, clock rates are relatively low for audio, and yields are very high. That's what drives the cost of DACs at the chip level - die size and yield, leading to how many good die you get per semiconductor wafer. Speaking as a design engineer for a company that made DAC chips.

I've never tried to listen to music while my iPhone is charging, never thought that was so common up until now of course.

Honestly, I personally prefer to keep my iPhone out of hands and out of use while it's charging.
Thought that was the best way to keep the wires from breaking and prevent overheating.

Edit - I cannot think of the restrictiveness knowing that the iPhone is connected to the charger on a wall/port somewhere and having earphones on, it'd require one to just sit around relentlessly and not even move the head too much.

But everyone certainly does have their own preferences so perhaps the future iPhones aren't for those? I mean if it ain't working for you, its best to switch to another no? If not then the alternatives are adapters or embracing the wireless sets and not just the AirPods but others too.

At your desk working, you want to listen to music so you can concentrate and drown out the office chit-chat, but your phone is out of battery. Loads of people with office jobs do this.

It just makes no sense whatsoever. Some kind of really weird corporate disfunction. And courage is right. They must be brave now when the pink slips come

The answer is simple people: If you are in a car, learn to whistle. And for those who complain that now you need one set of lightning headphones for your iPhone and another headphone set with a 3.5 audio plug for your Macbook, there's good news! Buy the female Lightning to male 3.5 mm audio adapter! Probably coming soon! Or just buy an iPhone 6s and hope they change their mind about being courageous with the iPhone 8. But don't bet on it.

Just like the external CD/DVD drive everyone uses on their new MacBook/MacBook pros

Not quite. It would be more akin to forcing the user to use a usb external dvd drive when they are charging their laptop using a lightning charge port adapter, and then force them to use the lightning external dvd drive when they are not charging their laptop - or to continue to use the lightning charge port adapter.

For the proposed "solution" to even be feasible, the lightning dock MUST contain the same headphone connectivity as used on the phone - that is, I have lightning headphones, I need a lightning port available to plug the damn headphones in when charging the damn phone.

A less insane solution would have been to say: you need to buy the Apple "Why?" lightning adapter - which will allow two lightning devices to use the phone's lightning port.

No matter if Phil is up selling or not, it's respectable he replied to a customer. I appreciate that. I know a lot of members are bitter and it's understandable, hopefully technology advances enough where it meets a median ground for everyone, including myself.
