So I have fork out for a brand new car as well now?
They make little transmitters for cars that do Bluetooth. Your other option is to buy another phone. The good news is most phones will not have a headphone jack from the 1900's soon anyway.

Exactly. $20 as seen here last month:

Griffin's New iTrip Clip Adapter Makes Wired Headphones Work Wirelessly

griffin-itrip-clip.jpg

Not the same situation.

When they ditched the disc drive, about 98% of customers were coming from a computer that had one; not too difficult to copy any disc-based files using your old computer and then migrate to the new computer. Music CDs could be ripped into the old computer too before migration. After migration, you could just throw away your old discs, which were no longer convenient or cost-effect as a storage medium when apple got rid of disc drives anyways.

In the current case, you have a product that is in no way obsolete (headphones and earphones) and superior to Apple's proprietary "solution" in most ways : sound quality, universality, price, repairability (a lot easier to fix a broken wire than a broken bluetooth transmitter or battery), usability (the battery time will get lower and lower until you're down to 2-3 hours of playtime per charge after a year or two) and longevity (once the battery life gets crappy enough, you'll have to pay apple $75 to replace the batteries or chuck 'em; meanwhile a good set of wired headphones might last 20-30 years).

Dongles and hubs of any sort are workarounds, and invariably ****** looking and clunky. Making a simple combination of functions like using the phone and charging it at the same time require a dongle is 100%, pure bad design.

Pretending that this is just Apple "pushing innovation forward" is retarded. They could just as easily have released the AirBuds and pushed their wireless Beats products while keeping the headphone jack so as not to **** their audience. Maybe it would have meant no vibrating home button or a phone that was a half mm thicker or something. Big ****ing deal.

It's exactly the same situation. Headphones will come with the connector that is the most popular and what works. There are a lot of Bluetooth options currently, as the last 8 months, everyone knew that Apple was doing this.

Apple making the change is identical to how people got so upset when they changed from that horrible dock connector to lightning...but the change had to happen...they make the change, headphones will follow. And yes...they will be obsolete soon (the headphone adapter).

Omg thank you for finding that and posting for me. I didn't want to look one up...

I'm so annoyed at how some people can be mad that Apple doesn't innovate and yet them, as the consumer, resists change so much!!

The guy said "headunit" twice.

He's saying replace the headunit, not the entire vehicle.

But, go on...

Many automakers took a page from the tech world (see Apple) and won't allow customers to install 3rd party head units without losing major functionality to their entertainment systems. Consumer tech has made almost everything non upgradable.

To go from one paradigm to the next costs. Simple as that. I hope this is good in the long run. I have premium headphones from Beyerdynamc (T70p) which will be dependent on the adapter. No that cumbersome i think. The interesting part will be how apple will solve it with computers and laptops? Will they include lightning port instead?

Well, suggesting people pay $50 to get back what they had before is pretty much asking for that.

I know! Doesn't that suck! I mean when they phased out floppy drives you had to buy an external one if you wanted to stay stuck in the past. Same with DVD and CD-ROM drives which the same stupid people said would be the end of Macs. Now hardly any company's flagship computers come with optical drives.

The same will happen with the audio jack. For crying out loud, the iPhone 7 wasn't even the first phone to drop the headphone jack. I can't believe the same idiots come crawling out of the woodwork every time Apple does anything.

Um, Bluetooth functionality comes from the headunit, not 'the car'.

It's 2016. If your headunit doesn't have Bluetooth, you should probably consider buying a new one. Lots of drivers play music in their car via Bluetooth.

Great solution.

want to listen to audio and charge your iphone in the car?
GET A NEW CAR

Brilliant idea, you are a credit to your species

Yeah, drop $20K so you can use a $600 device.

The stupid, it burns....

Yes the stupid does burn - the stupidity of people can't or wont read the original post.

Replacing the head unit will cost maybe $1000 - but that doesn't just mean you can now stream music to your car and through your car's stereo but you can make call more safely - you can even use CarPlay. Try reading before posting.

Many automakers took a page from the tech world (see Apple) and won't allow customers to install 3rd party head units without losing major functionality to their entertainment systems. Consumer tech has made almost everything non upgradable.

Fair point - do you suspect though that those which have great functionality that wouldn't be replaced by similar functionality in a new unit don't already have bluetooth? I find it hard to imagine that a modern locked down high end entertainment unit wouldnt have Bluetooth.

Way to go Apple. Remove the headphone socket, and then charge people for an accessory to get back what you took away.

They are giving people the adapter for free with the phone. frankly I am a bit pissed off about that - why should I pay for headphones that are crap and a waste of an adapter to be bundled with my phone because some people are stuck in the past?

Welcome to the club!!! People saying Bluetooth audio has lower quality because the specs says so, but their ears are not so sensible to feel difference and they listening to crappie 48bit mp3 :) No seriously I have the Sony MR1BT and puuurfeect, no cable tangles, no issue, I can let,you phone on my desk while going to pee with headphone, just FREEDOM... Only side effect.... 30hours autonomy...(Single charge) Mou hahaha

48bit audio? That doesn't exist.

To the average consumer, yes, it makes no difference. I listen to BT buds for exercise and cycling. Any other environment, I use my studio reference monitors.

However, if you think Bluetooth audio is as good as it gets, you're certainly... The average consumer. Have fun with that 48bit audio.

Huh? That accessory is in the box with the phone and is FREE.
So, the accessory that is in the box allows you to charge the phone and listen to music through the headphone socket at the same time? That's a big part of the functionality Apple took away.

High end Bluetooth headphones sound very good.

Do you know where to get the Bluetooth version of the Etymotic ER4B?

Nah I think I will stick with 3.5mm jack. There are good reasons as to why high-end audiophile manufacturers haven't released bluetooth headsets.

Oh, Beats and Bose doesn't count in case you were wondering and got fooled by their marketing ploys.

Pretty sure being vocal online about it won't change anything either. The way to get change in this situation is to vote with the only thing Apple cares about. Money. So, you know. Buy a different phone. Don't buy the iPhone 7. When asked why, say it's because there wasn't a headphone jack. Then move on with your life. That's the only voice Apple is going to hear.

You are right, though being vocal online makes a huge difference , antenna gate, bend gate etc all originated from users being vocal online. Users who work for media visit sites to get scoops on stories.

Rules? Bluetooth's permitted on a plane. Heck, all the planes have wi-fi internet now.

It's just your cellphone radio that has to be off in flight (not that having it on would do you any good anyway)
Actually I thought that too but research shows it varies from airline to airline regardless of FAA guidelines. United considers BT to be 'radio transmitter and receiver' and technically prohibits it though people say enforcement is erratic.

Honestly I was not using this port only for in fligth movies. The earplugs are taking less space than a BT HEADSET.

But in the car (2009 model) I have Audi mmi -> ligthning interface with an ligthning extension cable and this does charging and music, the phone calls are handled by Bluetooth...
So no need of carplay or changing a car...

It was same whining mode when iphone 6 changed from factor, same when moving to ligthning port, Mac dropping cd-dvd player, ethernet port, no support flash...

People like to complain. You don't want to change, OK take the 6S... Go back to your cave, you just missed the train to the future...

I recognize that the courage is the thing that Apple had to get to take such decision, for me working in IT the move was already done and perfectly makes sense to remove one type usage port by a multi usage smaller port...

The only complains I would have are :
- make autonomy a priority or fast / wireless charging a reality
- why there no simple dual ligthning port to make people able to charge and listen... Like a Y shape, Apple made big thing that on ligthnboth bus you can do both but it's not available? Shame
- The DAS, I don't know why our brains will be warmer by the model 7 but compared to other models the 7 series are really cooking our brain, just because redesigned antenna? Less efficient? So increase the power?

That's it folks, maybe the next version will have two ports

Hey, the other guy was talking like his usage was the norm, I was repeating his own wording back to him.

I would bet that the numbers would by far support my position. I wouldn't be surprised if there were 1000x more 3.5mm headphones in the world compared to bluetooth. So yes, i'm comfortable talking about my situation as if it is the norm.

Man, they (Apple) don't stop at nothing, do they...? A penny's a penny, my dear...

When some Windows Phone (Acer comes to mind) mobile manufacturers add their own dock to the retail package, if only for the user to make a better use of the Continuum functionality, Apple has the cheek to reply to a customer that, oh, would they be so kind as to shell out an extra 50 bucks for it, on top of the 800+ they've already disbursed...?

After the iPhone 7 launch, Twitter has abounded with tons of funny tweets about how much Apple will charge for "invisible" earphones five years from now, and although those tweets do offer a good laugh, they might well be a premonition...

Removing a headphone jack is not "innovation".

I know! Doesn't that suck! I mean when they phased out floppy drives you had to buy an external one if you wanted to stay stuck in the past.

So exactly how are wired headphones obsolete? They don't need to be charged after 8 hours, they sound better, are cheaper and less likely to be damaged.

By the time Apple removed floppy drives and optical drives from Macs they were well and truly obsolete with superior alternatives available.

You're new to this whole analogy thing aren't you?

Can't people just not listen to music during the duration of the time it takes to charge their iPhone 7!?

Also, let's bring back the floppy disk. I miss spanning(split) a file over 4 disks or more and bring the floppies over to a friend and then use the other tool to join the files together again using concat(possibly just the command 'join'). And then have the third floppy have a read&write error. Yeah, LET'S DO THAT. I CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE HAS THOUGHT OF THAT.
