They design for pure profit period !! No one makes margins like apple, look at the iphone. I really hope people don't buy these notebooks in order to send a signal to apple about overpricing not to mention they can't even produce a touch based notebook. Microsoft is killing them in innovation and they are ashamed to admit it. Really a 'touch bar' is that really going to make a difference !!!

The fact that they replied is confirming it is a PR concern with the price.

It would of helped if they added a convenient adapter that would had an HDMI, USB 3.0, and HDMI ports to what apple gave us with their dongle and a reverse 3.5 to lightening dongle.

are the two teams even communicating?

The extreme pricing was a bit too much for professional users that need to buy around $200+ in adapters.

I mean regular consumers are gong to be fine, but people who use this for work its going to cost extra. Not to mention using Skylake which was expected to be in older MBP what years ago?

Regular consumers will never use nearly all the ports as much or use 16GB of ram. They should of given us the 32 GB option at the consumers expense. IF battery life is a concern, address that in this version one and have good data to adjust and engineer for version 2.

Honestly, this is just lazy innovation to me, especially with the ports. What were they thinking?

They are just being arrogant. And they are using nothing more then simple marketing and selling tactics. They are in it for the money and nothing else after all.
I think the iPad Pro is their idea of a cheap computer now, not that it isn't.

But their is money to be made in those adapters... I actually had to think for a second what you meant, then remembered their is no lightning to USB C cable.

I agree that it is arrogant of them. I don't think they are only in it for the money. You don't become this successful in the business without having some serious passion for your products. But yeah, whether they perceive it as such or not, this pricing move was arrogant of them.

Im chocked, apple are about killing mac. ipads and iphone are their only legs. They have canceled their car project and they are working hard to kill MAC. Steve must be turning in his grave. I cant understand why the owner let Tim continue with his destroying of this great company.

From a developers perspective, is it really worth the time investment to create custom functions/UI for the TouchBar currently? It is (and will be for many years to come at this rate) a niche of a niche. I think pro apps would benefit from this the most... but then these aren't pro computers (aside from the name).

Hopefully apple realizes this and makes this available in a standalone keyboard (that isn't razor thin and tiny... i don't want a mobile keyboard with itty bitty keys for my desktop!).

IBM reports that Macs cost less over time.

The price of a Mac doesn't really matter to me, if you consider how much you use them and how long can they last.

A 2000 dollar Mac used for 2000 days is 5.5 years. I'm using a 2009 Mac right now.

Personally I wouldn't buy one new as there is no need for me with so many capable used machines out there, but if there were there a need I wouldn't find these computers "not worth it".

Whatever they do to their Mac line of business, they certainly aren't going to "destroy" the company with it.
Macs are rather irrelevant for the success of the company or its bottom line.
(Though there is a point in keeping macOS around as a development platform)

What about the experience of hard powering down your laptop when it freezes? Are we to just wait out the battery now? Sorry to others if I missed this.

I was initially surprised they didn't make a stand alone keyboard with the touch bar. But now that I realize they are milking the pent up demand for new Macs, they are probably gouging the early adopters before moving on to the next layer of customers with more accessible prices. It is how they have always worked, but the jump in prices has made it a slap in the face.

Sold us a bill of goods on the "courage" of removing the 3.5mm jack in the new phone, then left it in the Macbook Pro without giving us a lightning port to use lightning headphones you also sold us on.

That is a jarring inconsistency. Wow... I can see issues with a Lightning port on it though. What if someone plugged a USB charger into the USB-Lightning cable, and jammed it in the port. It would make charging even more interesting if you could use both. They could have just dropped the audio out altogether. I can't remember the last time I've ever used one on a notebook. Like ever...

I would just like to add that many USB hubs now have SD Card ports. Failure to that you can just use USB stick (with an adapter) which IMHO are more common than SD cards. But hopefully they will start making USB type C memory sticks.

You can also buy USB or BT keyboards so why include a keyboard on the MBP. Imagine how much thinner it could be without a physical keyboard!

If this turns real, i don't see it under 200$, taking in mind that the current magic keyboard is already 99$.

Thankfully retailers offer occasional sales on Macs, unlike Apple, so 10% off will take some of the sting out of it for people watching the price.

It also doesn't replace the screen or the RAM. If that's what you wanted it to do, then of course you'll be disappointed, but that was never the intent.

It replaces and enhances the row of function keys.
Ha, you'd have a hard job trying to replace the ram in a MBP

He didn't say they aren't doing this for money. He said they don't design their products with the price in mind and try to make an inexpensive machine. He said they design to make the best experience and that's why they are expensive.
Experience doesn't equal expensive, your logic is flawed

We don't design for price. We design for PROFIT
Just think, I have one more year to my 2012 rMBP which is still going strong before I cannot upgrade the battery. Once it is 5 years old i am out of luck.

Wasn't repair an option? When a graphics card broke on my 17" I got it replaced at a local repair shop for $200.

It's a work machine, so I couldn't live without it for more than a few hours. So coughed up the full price for the fastest replacement I could get. The only hassle was that the new one only has a tiny 1Tb SSD - my 17" had a 2Tb SSD ('cos it's easy to change the disk).

In the end Apple replaced the logic board for free, so result. Except that I'm living up to my handle (Glenny2Lappies).

Now that Apple have exited the professional laptop market -- sorry this latest "Macbook Pro" is a joke -- I guess the next laptop will be from another supplier. Pity, as I can't stand Windos.

For goodness sake, they don't even include the power cable!!!! Let alone all the adapters needed to connect all my peripherals - two Apple Thunderbolt monitors for example, not to mention disc drives, etc., etc.

Apple are like one of those boring movies which is all about the special effects and no plot. They've certainly lost the plot now.

Says it all that MacRumors managed to condense the 90 minute presentation into 4 minutes...

Apple's ancient history had it that when Steve Jobs left, it almost went bust as it was lead by marketeers. History has an amazing habit of repeating itself. The overpriced iPhone 7 with its missing headphone socket, the pointless overpriced watch, the feature-free Sierra with the useless Siri, and now the death of the Macbook Pro.

Ives, Shiller and Cook must be really proud of themselves as they drive the company into a pit of hubris.

I read it as "we don't design products for the middle class", if you aren't upper class then no new Macs for you.

Basically every company is going to go to this as the middle class in America is dying. In the future, there likely will just be a ultra-rich ruling class and peasant serfs.

I was initially surprised they didn't make a stand alone keyboard with the touch bar. I think it would be harder than we think to design a keyboard with the magic strip as it requires the separate SOC. The question is how would they handle the communication between the mac mini/pro/iMac and the keyboard with the integrated SOC. It would be a lot of chatter on the USB-C line; I'm too stupid to understand how they encrypt all that info to prevent other gadgets on the USB-C chain from sniffing passwords, etc. but perhaps some of the smart people here can clarify.

Vote with your wallets, people!
So what alternative laptop should I be looking at? Something with replaceable ram would be nice. Currently have a rMBP 15" and don't play games on it. Would also like a touch screen. Low weight would be good too. Current rMBP is 2 kg and aiming for 1.5kg or less would be great.
