It’s the Apple ecosystem. I love being inside the blue bubble.

Also, iPhones are the best smartphone out there in the world. It’s simple as that.
It is the ecosystem attraction, I agree. And Apple knows that and takes advantage of it and can do so because within their ecosystem, they have no competitors. This is, I believe, the reason why they do not have to go out of their way to make their hardware more sustainable, for example install replaceable batteries on their iDevices and AirPods …

I'm not really following you here. An Android iMessage app would just take over all messaging functions, which means you would use the iMessage app on the Android phone to send messages to other Android users. Since it's going through Apple's servers the pictures/videos would have the same quality as they do iPhone to iPhone. That's the beauty of it, iMessage totally bypasses the carriers and their MMS limitations.
Right. But they’d still have to use iMessage and anyone not using it would get them via SMS with its limitations; no different if everyone used Google’s messenger, except now Android users would get compressed files.

In the end you’d have to switch to one app, whether Apple’s or Google’s. The incompatibility would still exist.

Agreed. I live in Japan, where everybody - Apple and Android users - use Line for messaging. Nobody uses Apple Messages here (at least nobody worth messaging!). But my UK friends - Apple and Android users - don’t even know what Line is! Do you?

By the way (or “btw” as the kids say), if I switch away from Line, I’ll lose all my Totoro stickers! And I’m Gen-X !

If you say so dandyryan. Based on your MacRumors join date I can that see you've been an Apple fan for a little over two years.I have owned and loved many apple products but your cheering for a single companys dominance seems super dystopian to me.
im not cheering anyone, just stating facts i'm afraid!

"According to the report, younger consumers are concerned about being socially ostracized for not having an iPhone". What a sad, sad world we live in.

Edit: For all who are about to post "This isn't new..." I never said it was. Please, re-read above.
Sounds like an issue that is very much country or region specific - I'm a bit of an older millennial but I notice that the Gen Z in the office have a variety of different phones with pretty much all of them either using WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger thus making the whole 'blue bubble vs green bubble' to be a USA only phenomenon - well, at lest in my experience.

I thought globally, all using Whatsapp and Telegram? So not using iPhone iMessage isn’t really got any impact

Same ol' story. The market leader has to enjoy it while they can because there is always something else around the corner.
We have been there done that. A better product comes along and everyone will switch. Rather, Apple has to be careful and not fall into the stereotypical snooze mode of ..do as little as possible to maximize profits while someone else steals it's lunch.

These reporters sound like terminally online people. No one is depressed because of a green bubble in the SMS. No one is "ostracized" because of something so insignificant. This is the issue with social media, there is an entire cohort of journalists who grew up and graduated from college believing social media is real life.

Gen X dumped windows for doing Microsoft things. I doubt gen Z will do the same when apple's time comes, there are easily manipulated by youtubers, influencers, etc.
easily? sure it is easy? other companies can just pay influencers for their products right?

Considering we had that one quarter where Windows Phone gained some notable traction, anything is possible. The main thing that held it back was that it didn't have Snapchat and Instagram when both were at the start of their height.

Exactly, Google is not doing any charity here, they want money and iPhone users data.
Right now people are using What's App and other messaging apps, Google is missing out.
If Apple uses RCS then android users will start using google messaging app to send/receive messages from iPhones.

I don’t think it’s about the data. Rather, google realises that more people (in the US at least) are choosing iPhones over android phones and recognise that as more people in your social circle use iOS (and iMessage), the case for getting an iPhone over an android phone gets even stronger (even if it’s just for iMessage).

A stronger iOS user base, amongst other things, means that google has to pay more money to apple to keep search on safari as default, and it gives apple even more bargaining power over them.

Maybe they are hoping that Apple adopting RCS will slow down the rate of android users defecting to iOS. I doubt it will, but I think it in part shows that google is getting desperate.

And Apple knows it.

I personally like competition. But unlike AT&T prior to the breakup, when one got very little choice in long distance carriers, or local carriers or what telephones to buy, Apple is popular because people are buying their products and services. Unlike AT&T of the day, Apple isn't the only cell phone company out there and people can buy non Apple phones, tablets and computers.

Apple has caught on with the "younger" set. No doubt it's a blessing and a curse. The curse is the regulators breathing down Apples' neck wanting to disassemble apple.

Apple doesn't design new iPhone expecting that people will upgrade every year. they are expecting people to use iPhone for at least 3 years.

Actually no, they do want everyone to upgrade every year. They haven’t reached that goal, of course, because it’s very hard to reach, but clearly that’s what they want and they make every effort to get it. That’s why every year they come up with new features exclusive to the new iphones and soon only to the pro models: they want to make people want the new iphone every year. That’s also why there are rumors of an apple hardware subscription service coming up in the future: so a lot more people who otherwise couldn’t afford it can change iphones every year. Everything Apple does is aimed at getting as close as possible to everyone upgrading iphone every year because they have an overdependence on iphone sales (they’re more than 50% of their income).

They are not though, feature for feature they are near identical. Some features Android does better, other Apple does better.

However the "blue bubble" is literally a company socially controlling/shaming people into getting an Apple product.

There isn't a technical reason Apple doesn't play nice with Android, they intentionally make it worse so people don't like Android.

It's literally manipulation and anti-consumer behavior.

With Apple's new strategy, there's a tighter bond between their young user base and the computing equipment they use, so they will be far less compliant with prospective employers, and insist on using Macs, iPads, and iPhones even after entering the workforce. I am sure there are metrics that already solidify this.
That does explain why I use the Mac. Although it's also because my family handed down an old 2011 iMac when they upgraded, and I played Minecraft on it so much.

I had an engineering class where everyone in my group, except me, used a Windows PC. But every single member had an iPhone. They were also happy that our groupchat, which was used quite frequently for that class, had proper functionality like high-res images and blue bubbles.

It's a shame Apple are dragging their heels with updating to using current standards around rich messaging.
The problem is it’s not an industry standard but Google’s version of a protocol. An industry standard would be one developed by all the interested parties. Of course, that would be a LCD with many ways to customize it, much like USB-C.

Imagine blaming Apple for green bubble "shaming" when Google is the only one to blame for flop after flop... after flop. terrible product after terrible product and now they want Apple to bail them out and adjust for the competitor 🤣
