They don't need to pre-annouce a Mini. They just don't need to make the Mini too great an update if there's any danger of the Modular Mac Pro getting in the way. I wonder if the Pro displays will be delayed too. If that's the case then why update any of the Thunderbolt 2 products still on the market?

For people saying it's irrelevant because Mac Pros are out of the price range for most, I can remember when a Power Mac G4 started at $1499. Not sure if that was the lowest price ever for a Mac pro desktop, but it's the lowest I can remember. I think this last Mac Pro was so expensive because of the dual GPU design and because it was more of a niche product. It used to be more common to see Power Macs in every day use. The high school I went to had some Power Mac G3 towers.

After this news, I'm really glad I made additional investments into my 5,1 earlier this year. Will likely be running this machine regularly for another 12-18 months.

I now see no reason the next OS will not support the 2012 MacPro 5,1. And if that is the case 2009 4,1 and 2010 5,1 users should also be supported (maybe with some tricks involved).

I'm guessing this will include the Mac Mini too. It makes sense to create a Mac that if bare boned can be used as a Mini and built up to a Pro.

I wonder if the delay is more than just the Mac Pro itself. A modular Mac Pro tower would be trivial to design and manufacture compared to something like the iMac Pro, with its severe packing and thermal constraints.

If this rumor is true and Apple is looking at workflows, then they might be looking at a complete solution. Meaning not just the Mac Pro, but also servers to store your content, Mac Minis (or similar) for render farms and software to tie it all together.

Seriously, they have been developing desktops computers for years, this should be easier to design than an iMac given its larger footprint. Unreal that people have to dish out almost $10k just to get some decent speed for a Mac. Only downfall of owning a Mac is that they control everything and therefore can take their time. Most importantly it probably won't have the latest chips. This is very disappointing to hear indeed

Whats grilling me though, is that they've only seen fit since last year to look into workflow as a basis to build on top of, and frankly that is something that they should have been doing for many years ago. It also explains why they have their annoying habit of replacing software with new versions that lack the functionality of older ones -- the most obvious example being FCPX, which is fantastic now, but was released way too early to be a workflow replacement for FCP9 and resulted in the response we all know.

Acknowledging this does leave me at least hopeful for the future of their Pro hardware & software. Particularly so since I haven't been super confident about long term, especially with these recent rumours of future ARM Macs in 2020 and beyond.

Yeah, on one hand, it's good that they are thinking about the workflow. On the other hand, knowing how many creative pros helped keep the Mac afloat as a niche platform, this seems like one of the biggest balls they've dropped in the last decade. And one that's taking half that decade to fix. Really, guys?

I'm, uh, fine sticking with my existing hardware (2012 Mac Mini, 2015 iMac) on the Mac side until this stuff sorts out, honestly. I wouldn't mind stepping up to a Mac Pro again like I owned in 2006-2013, but they gotta deliver this time.

I don't understand what the issue is. Go back to a case design similar to the previous Mac Pro. Throw in a 1000w psu with multiple PCIe cables, use a motherboard that has 2 sockets for the latest Xeon chips, has standard PCIe slots and add as many USB-C TB3 compliant ports as possible. If they did that, they can charge me whatever they want.

Oh I know what the issue is. "Modular" means they can make it a proprietary mess where they will license out the "modules" format for other companies to use and build compatible hardware that will wind up always being a generation behind, have poor driver support or simply be abandoned.

Looking forward to this. This timeframe could work well for me as my iMac is getting older. A modular Mac Pro would be perfect for me and for continued upgradability in the future.

Bring it on!

Probably got stuck in Tim’s pipeline. And to all who’s asking for a Mac Mini -> MAC MINI IS DEAD.
There can only be a small amount of stuff in Tim’s pipeline. Which already is constipated with promises.
Don’t get me wrong, am also in the market for a Mac Mini. But it’s obvious that it won’t happen. iPad Mini -> dead. Mac Mini -> dead.  doesn’t like the word Mini in their product line anymote. It’s all about the three letter word Pro. Logical thinking

Hell yeah. But make it smaller...about 1/4 the size of the Cheese Grater.:)

This is all very good news.
1. That they are being open and transparent about their plans and their timeframe. That's all I needed to know. I'm pretty certain I can milk my 5,1 and my MBP 15" along for another year.

2. That they seem serious about listening to professional users about what we want and how we use our machines.

3. That they actually went out of their way to let the media know.

Now, we just have to wait. Let people save their complaints until after they announce it. Anything until then is just hot air. Back to work.

What ............. This really needed to happen like a year ago, not a year from now.

Hopefully they can go ahead and notify us that we can buy the new Mac Mini in 2020. At this point I only have my 2010 Mac Pro online so I can access my old Adium logs. I won't need a Mac by next year.

This article is about the Mac Pro. Why is everyone asking about the Mac Mini?

Because both machines have gotten the same treatment from Apple these past few years.
