Didn‘t they originally say not before 2019?
Yes, in stages though you might say. In April 2017 Schiller said “you won’t see any of those products this year”, referring to the Mac Pro itself and the new pro display. He specifically did not say 2018 either, and that was well-noted at the time, with many assuming that if he meant 2018 he would have said so (e.g. something like “you won’t see it this year, but it’ll be here next year”).

Then in April 2018 they said “the Mac Pro is a 2019 product. It’s not something for this year”, which many took to mean December 2019, like the iMac Pro in 2017 and the 2013 Mac Pro before it.

At WWDC this year, they gave another schedule update, saying it would launch this fall—which again many assumed would be December. Reportedly we’ll have another update soon confirming the launch for next month.

It’s been a long time in the making, that’s for sure. Just a horrendous job overall of product management of the Mac Pro. Customers deserved better, and I’m hopeful we’ll get it going forward.

So much for “coming this fall”

The first day of winter this year is Saturday, December 21st. So until December 20th, it is fall.

Edit: I was WAY later than everyone else to post this. I guess you can't just delete post entirely if you boff it up?

they’ve called it a modular mac since the very first rumors came out that Apple was ditching the trashcan. So the term stuck, but yeah, it’s just an upgradable tower like any other.
Schiller said in 2017 they were working on something "more modular."

People decided to run with the word "modular" ever since.

The YouTube concept videos were nuts. It was all pretty ridiculous.

Bloomberg?
They have any credibility left?
Gurman sure does. He's right more often than not.

Don't tar that guy because of the bogus story.

Is it seriously that difficult for a trillion-dollar+ computer company to come out with a new computer?

How do you know it's a redesign and not just an update?

It’s time. In 2017 or 2018 Phil / Craig said there was a roadmap for Mac Mini, iMac and Mac Pro.

2018 - Mac Mini redesign
20Mac Pro redesign
2020 - iMac redesign

It just makes sense. Maybe it’ll take cues from the Pro Display XDR. Maybe it’ll take cues from the iMac Pro. Next year will be 3 years since the iMac Pro came out.

They’ll get rid of the non-Retina 21.5” and have a nice up to date lineup.

I’d be shocked if all they do is a refresh.

Taking design cues from the Pro XDR display would be cool. Make it a thicker, get rid of chin, beefier cooling, FaceID and good to go. In 27" & 32" sizes

Let’s not forget that the Thunderbolt Display is still some of the best products produced by Apple and costs 5x less expensive than the upcoming model.

It will be fun to see how good the new design is and how it all pans out. My maxed-out iMac Pro is doing the job very nicely for me and will probably last another 3 years or so...but then I will likely switch over to the Mac Pro once the beast I have now can now longer keep up with what I need.
I was out on location filming - and a guy was carrying his iMac Pro with him - ready to hook up! I couldn't believe it! I asked why he wasn't using a MacBook and he said the doesn't care if he has to lug it around. The iMac Pro is a perfect machine fit for him. He takes it everywhere! Just wow!

It’s not a great term I don’t think, but Schiller called it modular mainly to contrast it with the tightly integrated, proprietary, internally non-expandable 2013 Mac Pro. (Many Mac Pro fans hung their hats on that term as strong evidence that Apple intended to offer a box with slots, but that interpretation was debated.)

But it’s a little different from standard PC towers in that there are two MPX bays, which are basically a superset of standard PCIe slots. Each bay occupies two PCIe slots, and can supply up to 500W and additional PCIe lanes, as well as internal routing for DisplayPort video (so no loop back cables necessary), to what Apple calls an MPX module. Those modules at present include: both single and dual Vega II GPUs, which offer x16 bandwidth to the GPU plus x8 bandwidth to four Thunderbolt 3 ports (the cards also include an HDMI 2.0 port); and a 32TB RAID array using 4x 8GB 7200 rpm HDDs from Promise Technologies.

If only one (or zero) MPX modules are in use, the user can instead use that space for two (or four) standard, full-length, double-wide PCIe cards. MPX bay 1 has one x16 and one x8 slot, while bay 2 has two x16 slots. Up to 300 Watts of power are provided to each pair of slots via a pair of 8-pin Molex connectors.

Anyway, any other tower computer can also be described as modular, so it’s not a term that is exclusive to Apple. Like other workstations, memory and CPU are also replaceable, but the internal SSD, while socketed, is a proprietary module. Presumably, they will be available from Apple.

That's impressive! I travel extensively and have considered getting a foam-filled Pelican case for my iMac Pro for some of the longer projects I work on, but I tend to spend very long days in the field and if I have any time at all after downloading footage, backing up, and preparing for the next day....about all I can do is organize, categorize, label, and keyword. The heavy lifting takes place back at home station. If I had addiotnal time on my hands while traveling, I would consider lugging the iMac Pro too. Thanks for sharing your story...I'm glad to see someone out there is actually doing it! Cheers...

Nah. Apple website still stated fall.
Yes, it’s launching this fall. Not sure what your point is or why you’re confused, but maybe I can help! :)

The Mac Pro is coming this fall, as advertised, but not over the next 18 days that remain of November. Instead, it is launching in December. Sometime before December 20th, when Apple and maybe 90% of non-retail businesses in Silicon Valley will close (until January 2nd, or maybe the 6th)

To be clear, Apple reportedly held a press briefing today and told the attendees the Mac Pro would launch in December. That’s the article we’re here commenting on. Mac Pro, launching this fall, which means before December 21. Your claim of “False advertising” is not correct.

Yikes. I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you. I think I’ve done (more than) my part. The rest is up to you. Good luck! :)

how can the biggest computer company in the world be so incapable to make a normal computer with standard parts for more than 80 months?

As a hard news outlet? Not to me. Not until they retract and apologize for their at worst, fabricated and at best, insufficiently researched/sourced clickbait hit piece. Add at least 5-10 years after that to regain my trust (which they will never succeed at doing 100%, but they can probably get above 95% given enough time).

However, Gurman has a few sources within the Apple-sphere and shares info that often turns out to be true. I’ll check out his Twitter feed occasionally, but like Fortune, BGR etc. I refuse to reward Bloomberg with any clicks whatsoever.

A long-lived reputation, absolutely destroyed with a single article. How they’ve handled the situation post-publication did most of the damage. Doubling/tripling down on a false story while unable to prove it (apparently just hoping the controversy will somehow disappear) has shattered a once-fine reputation. I hope those clicks were worth it.

Waiting on Intel making the CPU available, waiting on AMD making the GPU, trying to organise manufacturing with a lunatic trying to start a new world war.
