Kind of sad that everyone depends on Qualcomm so much for their 5G modems. Qualcomm really has a big lead compared to others designing 5G modems.
I guess this basically confirms that we won’t see any Apple designed modems before 2023/2024.

The 12 S will probably be called the 13.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the 2021 models given the 's' naming scheme as next year will more than likely be nothing but spec bump rather than the hardware redesign we had this year.

Then the all-new fully wireless model in 2022 which has been strongly rumoured & discussed.

Well, they are the leaders at what they do. Look how advanced their LTE modems were compared to the Intel junk the iPhone's had. And no one has anything to match their 5G modems for the foreseeable.

I'm delighted to see Qualcomm modems in the 12 series and beyond.

They follow Apple typical of US corporations, bully, use government, sanctions, patent, lawsuits etc to protect their monopolistic practices.

As such 5G is not standard essential for everyone unless someone wants higher speed. LTE & 4G is sufficient.

If Huawei were there this ransom for every bit of improvement from QC would not have happened. Rest of the industry is far behind QC wrt modem tech...

Apple must design it's own Modems if they want to control their prices but of course they need to do it without infringing QC IPs..even then it may not reduce prices of its products but expect their suppliers to give them cutting edge tech at throw away prices is a different matter.

Technology and innovation being throttled by these cartels in mobile tech industry at this point.

Qualcomm holds standards essential patents for LTE as well which applies to the 5G chips.

QC has clever array of patents and license agreements which is not obliged to share its modem tech that too its 5G at throw away prices. Apple, like Samsung, Huawei, MediaTek can design, implement, test its own modems. That requires heavy capital investment, skilled engineering team, very long term & slow testing with hundreds or thousands of providers all over the globe....let's see what Apple can do....no wonder it seeks 30%(double dipping iPhone owners) from everyone while it wants preferred treatment from others...

Same, really tired of beating down apple fanbois Defence of intel’s hot garbage of modem for the last couple of years

After buying Intel's 5G/network chip business and long term contractual agreement to use Qualcomm 5G tech; it is clear that Apple will certainly embeded 5G tech onto it's own SOC for space saving, higher performance and lower power usage.

I just feel like Apple may avoid “S” models in the future so we don’t end up with the iPhone 12 S Pro Max. We don’t want Samsung naming schemes, do we? 🤣

Why is it sad? QC objectively has the best modem on the market available for Apple to use today. Do you not like using the best?

Or is it just your petty dislike for Qualcomm as company? Newsflash: Apple is just as evil of a company with their business practices.

No because even here the 13 superstition is strong enough to prevent a lot of Floor 13s in our american skyscrapers. 13 has somehow bled through many cultures, even a normally non-superstitious one like ours.
The Rio Hotel in Las Vegas is an interesting one. They skipped all of the 40s because of the Chinese superstition but they kept 13. Even more odd is they didn't skip 4, 14, 24, and 34. /shrug

Why do you assume I hate Qualcomm because I think it’s sad that everyone is depending on Qualcomm and why do you assume I don’t want QC models in my phones?
I think everyone is glad that Apple is using Qualcomm models instead of crappy Intel ones.
It’s sad that there’s no other players on the market pushing for innovation, probably because it’s so hard to catch up to QC. Competition pushes all companies to move forward and take bigger leaps. Competition is good for customers.

Qualcomm also owns SEP for Wi-FI.
It's hard to make anything with a wireless technology and not pay Qualcomm.
Even when Apple makes it's own chips it will still be paying Qualcomm.

Right so if Qualcomm is in that position, they should not be able to "double dip" on the fees.

Why do you say there is no competition or Qualcomm is not innovating?

I would argue that Qualcomm does have competition. Huawei, Samsung, and Mediatek are all working on or have made 5G modems that compete with Qualcomm. Even though many of those aren't options for Apple they are still competing on other phones with the Qualcomm modem. That does in fact force Qualcomm to innovate. They have just be then best at it...... so far.
