Last week, well-connected display industry analyst Ross Young said he confirmed with his supply chain sources that Apple is planning a new 14.1-inch iPad Pro, but he has since revised his prediction and now believes the device may be a standard iPad after all.

In a tweet shared with his Super Followers today, Young said he confirmed that the 14-inch iPad will not have a mini-LED display after all. He also said the 14-inch iPad is unlikely to feature ProMotion, leading him to believe that the device may not be branded as an iPad Pro, given that all iPad Pro models released since 2017 feature ProMotion.

It sounds rather odd that Apple's largest iPad would not be a Pro model, but Young has accurately revealed many details about future Apple products, so we'll have to see how this rumor plays out. Apple will likely release the iPad in the first quarter of 2023, he said.

In another tweet shared with his Super Followers today, Young reiterated that the next 11-inch iPad Pro is not expected to feature mini-LED backlighting, despite the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro adopting the technology in April 2021. Apple is expected to update both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the M2 chip and more later this year.

I genuinely think Apple will drop the Pro line soon with the line up shifting to a more capable 'cheap' iPad and an iPad priced somewhere between the current Air and Pro available in multiple sizes from mini to 14". Or maybe the Air is dropped with just the 'cheap' iPad and a slightly more affordable Pro continuing.

There's just too much duplication in the line up, the 11" Air and Pro in particular.

The reality is Apple is selling less iPads while at the same time making more versions of them than ever. Some streamlining and focus is needed.

Funny I think the opposite. I think Apple will go even more Pro. That's where the margins are. Same thing with the iPhone. Apple is pushing users to buy the Pro model.

A standard 14" iPad... what in the... I fail to see the value of this except be an anchored device.
Initially thought the same thing but I’ve been thinking about it… It could be marketed as a more consumer-oriented hybrid laptop replacement, something that gives students a huge canvas for note-taking but then also turns into a ‘fully’ functioning laptop at a somewhat reasonable price? I’m really intrigued to see how this gets marketed / if it’s real. A 14” Pro + Magic Keyboard would’ve been crazy expensive for the masses.

Pro has often meant ‘biggest’ for Apple, so I would at least have expected them to have a 14” Pro variant and an Air-like variant… Having the largest display size only in the consumer lineup would certainly be an interesting pivot for them.

They'll keep at least one iPad Pro in the lineup for one reason; iPadOS 16 introduces a feature called Reference Mode that allows the 12.9" mini-LED iPad Pro to be used as a reference monitor for high-end color accurate work.

I like this take. Doesn’t really jive with how Apple always pairs Pro or the higher end features with larger displays, but I like it.

You may well be right. I just think something has to give in a shrinking market, maybe it'll be the Air that goes.

As it stands between the current Air and Pro 11" the only differentiator is very slightly thinner bezels, Promotion and an extra camera. Is it really worth the development cost for both models and who's going for the Pro? One that sits in the middle could be a better bet.

This seems like an obviously fake leak to catch leakers. Either that, or Apple has truly just given up on any sort of sanity in their product line-ups.
Fish out leakers in the supply chain by putting in fake orders that they don’t intend to follow through on? Sounds… complicated.

This is absolutely not going to happen. Apple wants the most profit, and they get the most profit by convincing you to buy their most expensive products. They also want volume, which is where the more consumer-oriented products come in, but rest assured they will continue to ’allow’ any and all to spend $2,000+ on the most Pro-est of iPad models. Forevermore.

The best-selling iPad BY FAR is the $300 model. If Apple introduced a 14" iPad at $900, they'd sell a ton.

Seems like the 14" iPad model would be marketed to creative types for graphics apps then.
