Apple's Rumored 14-Inch iPad Considered 'Unlikely' to Feature ProMotion

Not an iPad but rather a mobile display for MacBook.

We’ve all seen these from Dell and Lenovo. These things don’t need 120Hz. You want good battery life and light weight.

The best-selling iPad BY FAR is the $300 model. If Apple introduced a 14" iPad at $900, they'd sell a ton.
The $300 iPad you mentioned is the best selling model because it’s $300……… How well does that translate up to a $900 product? I feel like $799 would be a good price point, because at $899/900 it’s considered to be basically a thousand. I have no evidence to support that suspicion, though.

Just checked and the 2015 iPad Pro 12.9” was $799, yet I still doubt they sold nearly as many as the base iPad. Its attractiveness comes primarily from its low price and high value.

Fish out leakers in the supply chain by putting in fake orders that they don’t intend to follow through on? Sounds… complicated.
I don’t think it has to be that complicated. Just because someone is told that orders are placed doesn’t mean they are. Or that the order is real but the intended use is different. You don’t have to change info that much for a source to be distinctly identifiable.

Wouldn't you need 120Hz Pro-Motion for the graphic apps though?
ofc you need.. the difference between static 60hz and promotion 120hz in Maya 3d modelling is huge
And i suspect this 14.2" probably will be almost the same panel from the 14" mbp, so good for Apple in development cost, they just add the usual ipad spec touch

Just a quick note that in 2012 Apple got 25% of it's revenue from iPad, and that's when it just made one model. In 2022 that is now down to just under 8%

I agree, except I think they are going to drop the 11" Pro.
I highly, highly doubt that. The 11” is in a great, highly versatile sweet spot for everyone who doesn’t want to wave around a massive 12” glass slab and still have a personal sized tablet in a better size and including pro upgrades than the mini.

Ultimately we don't know but are lots of people really buying the 11" Pro? It just seems like a niche at this point being so similar to the Air.

They are slowly phasing it out by not giving it features like miniLED. It's likely that the 11" Pro is no longer in active development, or product roadmap.
*sigh* The 11” iPad Pro didn’t get mini-LED because it requires a tradeoff of additional weight, something the customers going for the more compact and portable Pro iPad don’t want. They discussed that decision-making process in an interview referenced here: https://9to5mac.com/2021/05/21/apple-shares-why-11-inch-ipad-pro-no-xdr-display/ It also would’ve likely required a $100 price bump to maintain their margins, so they would’ve had to increase the price barrier of entry to the Pro iPads, something I’m sure they didn’t want to do.

Also, Gurman specifically said just yesterday that there is an update coming for the 11” iPad Pro, so it’s still very clearly in their roadmap and under development. https://www.macrumors.com/2022/06/13/new-ipad-models-launching-sept-oct/

There are still a plethora of differentiating factors between the Air and the 11” Pro to justify that $200 price delta.

Fun fact: a 14.1" 4:3 display is roughly the same size as the common A4 paper size format.

Why should a student who just wants a large tablet for textbooks and taking notes splurge for a Pro iPad with LiDAR, ProMotion, mini-LED, FaceID, etc.?

Bring on the 14.1" iPad Air.
ProMotion makes the experience of using the pencil way better. If you constantly take notes with it, you will notice the difference.

What a muddy product line.

I would argue it is segmenting the product line to meet different market niches that have different priorities.

The iPad Air can do many things the iPad Pro can do, and use many of the same accessories, but the iPad Pro has very specific hardware differences to differentiate it from an Air and those differences have benefits to different types of users who pay the difference to get them.

It's why we're hearing rumors of a 15" MacBook Air. There are likely a fair number of people who want a larger display than 13.6", but do not need the power of a 16" MacBook Pro nor do they want to carry the weight or pay the entry price.

And it is why the iPhone 14 will offer a fairly cheaper Max model in addition to the Max Pro. People want a larger phone display, but they don't necessarily need all the extra bells and whistles the Pro has had and didn't want to pay hundreds more just for that larger display.

Ultimately we don't know but are lots of people really buying the 11" Pro? It just seems like a niche at this point being so similar to the Air.
For the $200 added price, the iPad Pro gets…
  • 11” display with thinner bezels
  • Four speaker sound system
  • Ultra Wide rear camera, LiDAR sensor and flash
  • Thunderbolt connectivity
  • 64GB extra base storage (and the Pro line has the ability to go up to 2TB / 16GB RAM)
  • 600 nits brightness
  • ProMotion 120Hz
  • Front Camera with TrueDepth and FaceID
They’re really not that similar. It’s like saying Apple is going to phase out the iPhone 13 Pro because it’s ’so similar’ to the iPhone 13 - not really defendable at all.

I highly, highly doubt that. The 11” is in a great, highly versatile sweet spot for everyone who doesn’t want to wave around a massive 12” glass slab and still have a personal sized tablet in a better size and including pro upgrades than the mini.
So will this potential new iPad be a huge slab.

Funny I think the opposite. I think Apple will go even more Pro. That's where the margins are. Same thing with the iPhone. Apple is pushing users to buy the Pro model.
FWIW, it's neat that we have iPads as cheap as $300 that are brand new and latest gen. That's what got me into another one at least (wasn't interested in paying $600+ for one). While their hardware always have healthy margins, I hear profits from services are doing well (which cheaper and more affordable devices helps boost users to use services).

It sadness me the no inclusion of mini led for the 11" iPad Pro, that's what I want in order to replace my 2018's iPad Pro that still going strong.
