At the rate Apple is going with bigger "pads", this will likely be true.

For the $200 added price, the iPad Pro gets…
  • 11” display with thinner bezels
  • Four speaker sound system
  • Ultra Wide rear camera, LiDAR sensor and flash
  • Thunderbolt connectivity
  • 64GB extra base storage (and the Pro line has the ability to go up to 2TB / 16GB RAM)
  • 600 nits brightness
  • ProMotion 120Hz
  • Front Camera with TrueDepth and FaceID
They’re really not that similar. It’s like saying Apple is going to phase out the iPhone 13 Pro because it’s ’so similar’ to the iPhone 13 - not really defendable at all.

It's completely different. Why are Apple supposedly phasing out the iPhone mini? Because the development/production costs aren't worth it given the sales. And iPhone is over half Apples revenue, iPad is now less than 8%.

The iPad has a shrinking market, Apple sells fewer of them every year. Yet it has more iPad lines than ever. Streamlining the lineup would save on development/production costs and be more profitable.

Regardless of what they call them there are currently 3 models in the 11inch (or very near) space. iPad, Air and Pro. I would say that merging the Air and Pro in one, or just ditching the Air altogether, would better focus that product. A clear volume and premium choice.

As it stands there are just too many of them. And you can bet there are many who consider the Pro but go for the Air given how similar they are. Even most reviewers recommend you do.

I genuinely think Apple will drop the Pro line soon with the line up shifting to a more capable 'cheap' iPad and an iPad priced somewhere between the current Air and Pro available in multiple sizes from mini to 14". Or maybe the Air is dropped with just the 'cheap' iPad and a slightly more affordable Pro continuing.

There's just too much duplication in the line up, the 11" Air and Pro in particular.

The reality is Apple is selling less iPads while at the same time making more versions of them than ever. Some streamlining and focus is needed.
I like your points. I'm probably ready to have a larger screen, and have probably said in the past I'd go for a 14" iPad...but I want it to be a Pro. If it isn't I'll probably just add a MacBook and keep my "old" M1 iPad Pro. I do wish MacBook had internal cellular though!

I’m confused because the 1st and 2nd gen ipad pro’s were closer to 14” in length, lolol, what could possibly fill the gap now?

They are slowly phasing it out by not giving it features like miniLED. It's likely that the 11" Pro is no longer in active development, or product roadmap.
Doubtful. I'd like to see complete numbers but by what I have seen the 11" Pro outsells the 12.9" Pro considerably. One of the reasons the 12.9" is getting more features is because it is lower volume and also to try and increase sales. The 11" is selling well even without miniLED. If they added a larger pro it would be more likely the 12.9" would be the one dropped.

Apple's iPad strategy seems to be sorely lacking ... reminds me of when they sat on streaming so long and let Spotify pass them by. Yes, they need a larger version (duh!). Maybe even drop the 'Pro' moniker and create more of a 'Media' consumption-specific device as that's what so many really use them for anyway. If they're smart, the next release would be:
- Widescreen aspect ratio. The current 4x3s are soooo ungodly dated.
- And speaking of dated, lose the bezels already. And I mean completely. Add a quarter-inch area of (active) dead pixels all around to eliminate false-touch positives and you now (finally) can hold a beautiful, seamless piece of edge-to-edge glass as you scroll the web, watch movies, etc.
- With the larger size, I'd also go thinner and lighter, too. But that's less important than the first two points.

Do all this and maybe, just maybe, the iPad won't be looked at as such a tired, legacy device that hasn't seen a true design upgrade in, like, forever.....

Fun fact: a 14.1" 4:3 display is roughly the same size as the common A4 paper size format.

Why should a student who just wants a large tablet for textbooks and taking notes splurge for a Pro iPad with LiDAR, ProMotion, mini-LED, FaceID, etc.?

Bring on the 14.1" iPad Air.
I think you are on to something. As a book, pen and paper replacement, at 14 inch ("cheap") iPad would be excellent for students and others.

Very strange rumour if not an as large or larger M2 iPad Pro is introduced before to show off the Stage Manager. iPad has been introduced in the spring events and there a 14 inch iPad would fit. A 14-15 inch iPad Pro may still be introduced in the autumn.

That’s a great point. For some reason I had thought the 12.9” screen was nearly identical to A4, but maybe it’s actually the total device size because I checked DisplayWars and sure enough you’re right - 14.1” screen would be almost identical to an 8.5” x 11” A4.

Interesting to look at the visual representation of 12.9” vs 14.1”, too.

A device that size with a 4:3 aspect ratio would look weird. 3:2 aspect ratio is the better way to go.

I've always lamented that they just haven't made extra large basic-spec ipad purely for media consumption. I'd love a 16-17" ipad with a mini-LED screen, good speakers, and basic internals. I don't need multicore gpus, video rendering capability, etc. Just a big a$$ iPad to watch movies and browse the web.

The best-selling iPad BY FAR is the $300 model. If Apple introduced a 14" iPad at $900, they'd sell a ton.
I most certainly wouldn’t pay $900 for a base iPad that is 14”. Maybe at $600. Because if it shares the same specs as the 10.2” iPad, then $900 might be pushing it. If it’s based on the iPad Air, it would make more sense, but that’s what the Pro is for.

The iPad Air is in many ways a less-expensive iPad Pro so I could see Apple filling out both product categories a bit more.

iPad Air 10.9"
iPad Air 14.1"

iPad Pro 11"
iPad Pro 12.9"
iPad Pro 15"
The “pros” are expected to buy the Studio Display for Stage Manager, so no iPad Pro 15".
