I’d expect that size to be too heavy for “Air” (Macbook Air notwithstanding).

I kind of agree — I just used it more for a way to distinguish it from the Pro when I referred to it in that list. I’m probably in the minority, but I feel like the Air name can go. Keep it a bit simpler - iPad, iPad Pro. MacBook, MacBook Pro.

Fun fact: a 14.1" 4:3 display is roughly the same size as the common A4 paper size format.
A4 is actually halfway between 4:3 and 3:2 (it’s √2:1). It has the property that cutting it in half doesn’t change the aspect ratio, whereas cutting 4:3 in half gives you 3:2 and vice versa. With regard to split screen, the √2:1 ratio would actually have been a smart choice for a tablet.

At this point, the iPads and MacBooks have gotten as thin as the Air did. Indeed it's time to retire the Air branding and simplify the line-up.

Perhaps this is inline with the new iPhone 14 Max: larger screen, no Pro features. They could call it the iPad Max or... the Max iPad... sorry, had to do it.

I genuinely think Apple will drop the Pro line soon with the line up shifting to a more capable 'cheap' iPad and an iPad priced somewhere between the current Air and Pro available in multiple sizes from mini to 14". Or maybe the Air is dropped with just the 'cheap' iPad and a slightly more affordable Pro continuing.

There's just too much duplication in the line up, the 11" Air and Pro in particular.

The reality is Apple is selling less iPads while at the same time making more versions of them than ever. Some streamlining and focus is needed.
They have been selling less iPads because they have elected to cannibalize the components to keep their iPhone production lines moving. They have said as much in earnings calls. Lying there has some serious consequences.

If Apple were going to drop the iPad line, why would the primary feature of iPad OS 16 be Stage Manager; a feature only available for the newest Pro iPads?

Yes, the Air and 11” IPP are a little close. If you spec the Air up to the same level as the IPP, the price is pretty close, so the Air is not a slam dunk. It just has a lower base model. Perhaps they will sweeten the specs of the 11” IPP to separate those a little. Maybe their will drop the 11” IPP, but that would be sad. It is a better portable device than the 12.9” model. We probably won’t know until this coming spring.

A larger iPad Pro makes sense if they are leaning into multi-tasking on it and for graphic artists. Having a 14” basic iPad would just be weird as it’s main feature is the low price.

A 12.9” ipad is big. A 14” one would be pretty unwieldy for a regular consumer. It just seems a size that a professional would be willing to put up with more. This is just a rumor anyway. I just think if you‘re going that big it seems natural to market it to professionals who truly need the extra screen size to work on art or photography. But i dunno. Maybe regular consumers out there just want a HUGE iPad to consume content on? 🤷‍♂️

Just a quick note that in 2012 Apple got 25% of it's revenue from iPad, and that's when it just made one model. In 2022 that is now down to just under 8%
In 2012 there were two iPads, the Regular and the Mini, but even by 2014 the revenue from iPads had dropped a lot to something like 15%. Lots of reasons for the decline including Phones and Services making up a greater percentage of revenue now.

A 12.9” ipad is big. A 14” one would be pretty unwieldy for a regular consumer.

When Apple released the 3rd Generation 12.9 inch model, they shrank the physical size by about 10% so a 14.1" model with similar thin bezels might not be much larger than the original 12.9". Now that was a bit unwieldy, but people did use it for years.

You, downtrodden: lcd 60hz display on a 14” ipad?!

Me, all knowing: OLED 144hz studio motion display incoming

Funny I think the opposite. I think Apple will go even more Pro. That's where the margins are. Same thing with the iPhone. Apple is pushing users to buy the Pro model.
There’s a big difference though… people don’t pay full price for their iPhones (or at all) cos it’s subsidized. Also, iPad competes with MacBooks and loses on the value front… iPad 11” Pro with magic keyboard or 13” MacBook Air for the same price?

Is this really so? I've been paying full price for my iPhones since the iPhone 6S.

Last week, well-connected display industry analyst Ross Young said he confirmed with his supply chain sources that Apple is planning a new 14.1-inch iPad Pro, but he has since revised his prediction and now believes the device may be a standard iPad after all.

In a tweet shared with his Super Followers today, Young said he confirmed that the 14-inch iPad will not have a mini-LED display after all. He also said the 14-inch iPad is unlikely to feature ProMotion, leading him to believe that the device may not be branded as an iPad Pro, given that all iPad Pro models released since 2017 feature ProMotion.

It sounds rather odd that Apple's largest iPad would not be a Pro model, but Young has accurately revealed many details about future Apple products, so we'll have to see how this rumor plays out. Apple will likely release the iPad in the first quarter of 2023, he said.

In another tweet shared with his Super Followers today, Young reiterated that the next 11-inch iPad Pro is not expected to feature mini-LED backlighting, despite the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro adopting the technology in April 2021. Apple is expected to update both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the M2 chip and more later this year.

I think Mini - LED is too bright after all. I usually keep the brightness on my iPad Pro 2021 at less than half level of brightness. It’s just too bright at the full level of brightness. A table sizing 14.1 inch with mini-LED iOS just too much. Mini-LED is all about brightness really, nothing else does to improve the resolution. On the company’s as well as the consumers’ pocket however makes a difference approximately by $150. Instead the company can save that amount to reinvest more useful features.

I want to see the 14.1 inch iPad Pro replacing some of those apple MacBooks. I have the MacBook Pro 2020 version and it’s been a while since the last time I used it.

Heaven’s damned laptop is so inconvenient without the touchscreen. Laptops have to be dumped into the scrap spools.

Apple needs to focus on the iPad Pro improvements and raise them to the real pro as for professional computing with full operating system, not as Pro just for the name and a short extension to it, yet functionality is not greater than an iPhone.

Go iPad ProBook!
