Fast Company's source says that Apple has "been unhappy" with Intel as of late
Gee man, if you are unhappy with intel, you should vote with your wallet and stop buying from them.
That is the advice that all the Apple pundits in this forum give me when ever I am unhappy with a supplier. :D
Rumors late last year suggested Intel and Apple were already working on 5G chip technology for future iPhone devices. Intel is said to have thousands of people working on 5G tech to catch up with Qualcomm and win Apple's 5G modem contract.
Wait, Apple makes chips that blow the competition out of the water, they should keep the competition at 'arms' length and create their own custom silicon because they can optimise for their hardware. So it will obviously be much better and run much cooler. Apples own chip would actually cool the device so much that they could use the modem chip as the heatsink for their own CPU. :D:D
The first 5G smartphones are expected to start debuting early in 2019, with the first to be Android devices using Qualcomm 5G chips.
Of course Apple are never first to the party, they wait until everyone else has done it so they can do the research of what mistakes they make and they can fix it to come up with their fastest chip yet. Its gorgeous and beautiful (have I left out any adjectives here? Let me know in the comments) :D
5G technology is expected to deliver speeds that are 10 to 100 times faster than the average 4G connection, at a gigabit per second or higher, along with lower latency and other benefits.
Not to be outdone Apples will be even faster, 'lightning' fast, oh wait, its intel that is making the chip, I forgot. Apple only has enough resources to make the CPU, so don't be daft, the modem that Apple make will be in the 2030 iPhone.

"Our fastest iPhone EVER! You can do AMAZING THINGS with 5G!! Prices start at $1699." - Tim Cook at iPhone Dog-and-Pony show.
You've made a mistake in the above, it should have said Prices start at $2699. :D
Because Apple don't have a crystal ball and will blame it on currency fluctuations, because everyone totally buys that one.

I really can’t imagine what they’re gonna do with next year’s iPhones. Like, what else is there to do? Lol. Especially in terms of design.

We already have glass backs as a standard, stainless steel frame as a standard, Face ID... very curious what next year will hold. iPhone XI with mostly mostly the same design and then an iPhone 2020 (XX) with no notch?

What I suspect will happen is, Apple will use the 2018 iPad Pro's launched this week to influence some of the design in the next major redesign of the iPhone. Just don't expect it in next years iPhone, which I think will look just like the iPhone X/XS series.

The 2020 iPhone will feature that iPhone 5s look, but with a glass back, stainless steel frame. Jony's design dream though is to have a single slab glass, but the released products have not given any such indication.

Strange world we live in when a $50 Huawei has Qualcomm radio but a future $1K iPhone might have a Mediatek radio.

Last time I heard Qualcomm had a preference of charging Apple higher fees (hmm, seems like Apple is not the only one who likes money) I say f these bastards. Teach them e-lesson, they are not the only one in town. And all you guys acting as you know ****, why don't you wait first and see how the device performs before starting your "superbrain" lecture on what tech giants should or should not use on their new products? i I get the feeling that at the end, no one will force you to buy a product with "inferior" modem! Just like you have the choice to chose, believe it or not, cooperations have a choice to choose also what tech to use.

Given Apple's success with other silicon I do wonder if they've had a go at doing their own modems since they've already entered wireless with the "W" series chips.
Yes, yes, I'm aware of the monumentally greater complexities but still, this is a company with the deepest pockets who loves to control "end to end".

Apple has been rumored to be designing their own baseband chip for years. It wouldn’t necessarily surprise me, but is it the type of product where Apple could bring something extra to it? It’s standards-based tech; as long as they have reasonably priced, competent suppliers it seems like it would make more sense to just buy it.

Say what you will about Qualcomm, but they're still #1 when it comes to modem technology. And to me, it's a loss that Apple doesn't have them in their iPhones anymore. Perfect example of a battle between two big companies where the loser is the consumer.

The consumer loses due to lack of competition. Apple is being snotty because they know the consumer has no options, the only other option is Android. This kind of thing wouldn't happen when they were going after Microsoft for cash in 1998.

I'm not a big "all EMF is harmful" guy but reading about the coming 5G rollout does give me pause. As one scientist explained "if you don't like the radiation from cell towers you can make sure you don't live next to one". With 5G, you won't be able to avoid them as there will need to be literally hundreds of thousands of "mini cell towers" because the ultra high 5G frequencies do not travel very far. Here's one website that talks about the potential problems. https://ehtrust.org/key-issues/cell...s-iot-scientific-overview-human-health-risks/

Hopefully it will be called iPhone 5G. Time to get out of the messy names like iPhone XR, XS and XS Max...

Agree. It’s probably the worst naming convention of iPhones to date , it’s like they are cars . After the the x they should have gone with 11 or just iPhone

Latency matters a lot for webpages, especially newer ones with lots of resources coming from different places. HTTP sucks. Each HTTP request takes 2 round trips, not counting the DNS lookups. With 250ms ping, that's 500ms total. A request for a 5mbit file at 10mbit/s takes just as long queuing the data as it does waiting for latency. Most things get requested in parallel, but not all.

You can look at the timeline in the web inspector in Safari to get a good visualization of this. MacRumors front page takes almost 5 seconds to load fully for me, with strings of requests.

Realistically 5G should also offer more bandwidth than 4G. More towers, less travel distance. Could help with streaming videos. LTE can stream a video fine on a perfect connection, but it's usually not perfect.
Don’t notice a difference between LTE and WiFi when I switch off WiFi in my apartment / on the road. Both technologies work fine for my usage. Poor coverage is my only hinderance. If I were to benchmark the difference, it would be very slight in real world scenarios. Streaming is perfect for me on a standard LTE connection, guess I don’t share any of the deficiencies you listed (I stream video at full resolution, not 480p).

MediaTek is a huge company in Taiwan. It’s not amateur hour.

Are you from MediaTek? Because no one in their right minds would choose MT chips over any other established competitor on their mainboards. I used to build my own PCs in my childhood and whenever I had a cheap mainboard in use, MediaTek was common as an onboard audio chip supplier and even with cheap stereo speakers, you could hear the difference to other relatively cheap audio chips.
Most things haven‘t changed and I hate to buy a premium for a relatively good* phone which uses cheap internal 3rd party components and push the prices at the same time. I’m not buying stupid iPhones anymore and reward that level of customer exploitation. iPhones used to keep the same high pricing while adding newer and better hardware. Now they‘re increasing prices while adding inferior hardware. It‘s all very nice and impressive that you can get higher speeds than the competitors second-last year‘s LTE modem, but what does it get you if you trade it for worse reception?

*The best is not always good and good is not always the best.

Exactly, for me, I don’t spend my money purchasing consumer grade electronics products I don’t like. Additionally, I don’t go for “best of the worst” philosophy either. Don’t know why people do. Oh well!

That doesn't make any sense, why on earth would people by products they don't like?
I think you are conflating ones appreciation of a product with appreciation of the company.

MediaTek? Seriously?

Give up Apple, just pay Qualcomm. You're not hurting for cash.

MediaTek makes the $6 SOC behind Amazon's FireTV. A Heavily cut down competitor for Apple TV.

Only thermal energy - how about radiation?

You should try to understand the difference between ionizing radiation (used in nuclear power, xrays, etc) and the type of harmless radiation that is all around us.

Any radio waves are by definition radiation. You’re not being killed by tv and radio station broadcasts. The Sun emits millions of times more non-ionizing radiation than your cell phone.

The type of radiation emitted by your cell phone is not the same kind you’d think of being emitted by a nuclear disaster or by xrays. Non-ionizing radiation is all around us, most of it a part of nature that we’ve lived with for millions of years.

Maybe he is referring to the 5G towers,..which emit far more radiation than 4G. Multiple towers are required, where usually a single tower with 4G is necessary.

In fact, how you can make those observations, when research into 5G is ongoing, I have no idea. We have had TV and radio station broadcasts for far longer, clearly.

I hope whatever Apple decides to do with 5G technology that they test test test so we don’t have another reception mess on our hands.

You forgot how apple works?

- first they release 5g
- we pay 1000$ for it
- we test it, resport bugs, issues...
- they fix it all

--> and release a S version with faster cpu and all bugs fixed

and we BUY again

rinse repeat
