I agree. But it does highlight two points. 1) Apple has only now pulled such a high profile hire to the Siri team, realizing now (years later since Siri was unveiled) the service isn't good enough 2) It had to hire from outside, no one inside Apple was good enough to fill the role required.

AI experts, and the hire isn’t just for Siri (Siri is under Craig Federighi and this guy reports right to Tim Cook), are pretty specialized group. It makes sense that they snatched up a Guru even if they had a good team.

If I had my way I’d put the Siri team in charge of the South Korean Killer Robot program, thus ensuring they never get developed.

Mock Siri if you must....

But... until I asked Siri, I didn’t know you could convert Liters to kilobytes or gigabytes.

So I must admit, her conversion skills are impressive.

Now... if only she could play the song I asked for...

There’s a lot of things to fix about Siri making her learn new jokes should be last on the agenda

One problem apple has, compared the competition, is that they cannot make Siri smarter by using private data of the users. Apple’s privacy rules are. Incredibly potent.

Personally, I use Siri a lot and it works fine for me. In the light of Cambridge analytics / Facebook: I don’t think apple’s stance on privacy is bad at all.

Why do people call these smart assistants? They respond to voice commands but they’re not smart. People seem to confuse those categories. Smart would be if Siri knew something before I did or reminded me about something I forgot.

The only smart feature that is currently available I can think of is travel time alerts for appointments, as they take traffic conditions into account. Otherwise she’s dumb as f...

One small example: I ask her directions to a store. Siri, in all her wisdom, suggests a store on the other side of the world. So I lookup the store by typing the name. Two minutes later I ask Siri again and she again points me to the other side of the world. She’s not learning anything and remains as frustrating to deal with.

I don’t know about Alexa or google Home as I don’t use those but Siri is not “behind” in terms of capabilities, she’s just not smart. By a long stretch.

6 iterations of iPhone after Siri was introduced with the iPhone 4S and the headline is that Siri's learned new jokes. Meanwhile Alexa and Google Assistant rocketed leap years ahead. Speaking of jokes...

Apple appears to have recently updated Siri on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and HomePod with a slew of new jokes to tell. Based on reports on Twitter and from MacRumors readers, the new jokes started rolling out earlier this month.

When you ask Siri a question like "tell me a joke" on an iOS device, Mac, or the HomePod, Siri has dozens of fresh responses to share with you.

[*]"What's the difference between roast beef and pea soup? Anyone can roast beef."
[*]"One night, I paid $20 to see Prince. But I partied like it was $19.99."
[*]"I taught a wolf to meditate. Now he's Aware Wolf."
[*]"What do you call a labrador that becomes a magician? A labracadabrador."
[*]"What do you call a talking dinosaur? Thesaurus."
[*]"What do cats like to eat for breakfast? Mice Krispies."

With the humorous new additions, Siri's joke repertoire has expanded significantly, and you need to ask for jokes several times before hearing a repeat. Siri also appears to have new knock knock jokes, accessible by asking Siri "knock knock."

Apple updates Siri on a regular basis with new content in an effort to instill the personal assistant with personality and expanded capabilities. In February of 2017, for example, Siri promoted the LEGO Batman Movie with a series of funny responses to the query "Hey Computer," and when Pokémon Go was released, Siri was updated with several Pokémon-related responses.

Siri is often criticized for shortcomings in comparison to AI-based offerings from competing companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, which is said to be due to Apple's heavy focus on protecting user privacy.

Apple is aiming to make major improvements to Siri, however, and has recently hired former Google AI chief John Giannandrea and the team from Init.ai, a customer service startup focused on creating AI with natural language processing.

it would be nice if siri allowed a bit of swearing.... homepod... "hey siri, shut the f**k up" doesn't turn off the music. lol.

So a bit off-topic, but does anyone find the iOS 11 Siri voice far worse and robotic-sounding than the previous version? The actual voice is better but the way she pauses and adds emphasis is horrible and annoying...
Just wait until they add ‘vocal fry’! Or they make its delivery sound like the guy who narrates all the stupid macrumors videos ... then you’ll truly know horrible and annoying.

You’re right - the ‘smartness’ of Siri at present is pitiable. I don’t think Apple is keeping up with the general pace of improvements in AI, broadly speaking. Maybe in a couple years they’ll acquire another company that gives them a boost there. They need it...

All I use Siri for lately is ‘switch off Bluetooth’. And then ‘switch off wifi’, because obviously it can’t manage both together.

Mac mini hasn't been updated in 3 years, no more routers, monitors, Siri is lagging, macbook air is old, facetime needs improving, etc etc etc and they spend resources on adding jokes, emojis, watch bands, different colour cases and coloured phones. What is Tim doing to Apple these days.

I asked Siri to say hello to my baby daughter...

Me: Say Hello Ivy
Siri : Hello
Me: Say HEL-LO I-VEE
Siri : Hello
Me : Say Ivy
Siri: I'm sorry, I can't do that. Here are some web results.

Siri is an utter joke. Sort it out Apple, you've had long enough.
