Apple needing to realize google doing something's better tha they doing and working with them to giving customer a better phone

That's all nice scuttlebutt, but as a customer that pays top dollar for Apple's products, I don't give a rat's ass about their scobbling with business partners! I expect above standard solutions for the Apple prices I am paying.

What's funny(?) is that if this were any other company/service - the likelihood of "acceptance" would be much lower.

If someone's favorite restaurant swapped out their fantastic steak and replaced it with something of lower quality, smaller size and inconsistent in flavor...

If the local gas station changed the formula for gas and it gave less performance

and other (probably) poor analogies

Some people might not be as affected by the Maps app and Map Kit. That doesn't make it not that big of an issue.

It seems to me that this whole map controversy is a little overblown and while I can appreciate Apple's position it does seem that both map apps could have co-existed for a year, or until Apple's got up to speed. I'm guessing that many of us already have other mapping apps on our devices (Mapquest, Motion-X, GPS Plus, etc.) and use which one we prefer. Eventually, the best one wins! Nonetheless, in my area Apple's version works pretty good.

Hating Apple is a religion for some as well. ;)

i own a macbook pro 13, ipod touch and classic, ipad (even convinced my stubborn mom to buy one for herself) and soon to be an iphone 5 owner soon as my order comes in.

im hardly an apple hater. but if something sucks it sucks. and im not going to defend it.

I may be in the minority, but I actually really like apple maps navigation. It's clean, fast, and has a good UI. It has worked perfectly for me. For being apples first rendition of maps, I think they did a GREAT job. And you know it's going to one of apples main focuses in iOS which means it's going to get better, better, and better.

The app itself is rock solid and slick, no doubt. It's lack of POI's and accurate maps that is the issue and it seems to really depend on the region you're in.

I'm lucky as in my region it's only missing brand new roads not even Google Maps has so I love it. For the missing POI's I'm just using Google Local which is exactly the same database that Google Maps uses.

Replace and not replace ARE NOT the only two options.

Have both installed, and a setting 'MAPS : Google/Apple'.

Gradually as Apple maps becomes superior, more people would be selecting Apple.

Apple could even keep track (after confirming with users) which one they are using and then remove Google after enough people were happy with the Apple one.

Apple needs to think outside the ONE SOLUTION box they are trapped in.

If I paid $300+ dollars for a device that requires a $100+ monthly service fee (more like $80 for me), I sure as hell expect it to work as intended.

Still pretty damn whiny if you ask me. Forget all the other features your smartphone does, your upset over an digital application on a smartphone...WHAT? Come on man.. Again...the fact you pay lots of $$...excuse me $80 HA...for a luxury you should be grateful to even have. Just saying, perhaps take the good with the bad. Stop whining.

I was using Apple Maps today and it worked fine. How many years has Google maps been in development? How many years as Apple been developing theirs? Seems like people just need something to complain about. Not the end of the world here people!

I travel around quite a bit, and relied on maps extensively. It's not like I'm suddenly missing a simple fluff feature I could easily do without. It's more like my phone lost some of it's basic functionality after a supposed OS upgrade.

I'm not happy with it. At all.

As for it being a luxury feature? Yeah, you're right. So's my car. I guess I should be grateful the dealer hasn't decided to upgrade my package by installing a new steering wheel, but taking the tires in the process because they had a little spat with Kumho.

This is the best explanation yet for how Apple got in to this mess. It seems like a good reason for Apple to break ties with Google, and I have faith that very soon... weeks or months, Apple's map app will be very good, even superior to what Google offers. Thanks for the article

You're dreaming if you think Apple can one up what Google has been refining for years, in a matter of weeks.

You just sound like an uninformed consumer then, sorry. And no one is to blame but yourself. Lesson of technology, whether it's new hardware or a new OS.....New problems. Don't reply with some "Oh well Apple shouldn't have put out bad OS updates." Most companies, especially Apple, aim for the best possible release and then fix what issues arise. No one forced you to update. No, you rushed into an OS update without waiting and seeing if it was right for YOU and what YOU DO.

[As for the iOS5-and older-Map app being a "basic functionality" feature is silly..whose ever thought of that as a worthwhile Map app since Google AND Apple couldn't work out a deal. It died a long time ago.]

I mean, would waiting 2 days for an update have been that hard? Then you could have seen that Apple Maps wouldn't work for you and thus you wouldn't have upgrade. Don't be mad cause you made a mistake.

And your car analogy...I'm lost. So your point again is you have a lot of frivolous luxuries??? I don't know... Maybe you should've bought Nav guide in your car.

Gruber explains why Maps shipped earlier than it should have:
http://daringfireball.net/2012/09/timing_of_apples_map_switch

It sounds like the deal would have expired midway through iOS 6's life cycle, so either Apple would have to put in their Maps version in 6.1 or 6.2, which they don't want to do, or they would have to renegotiate with no leverage and at a huge disadvantage.

I admit I did jump the gun a bit. The curiosity and excitement got the best of me. But what was supposed to be the best prom night ever ended up with yet more tear stains on my hope chest.

Seriously. Having a few bugs here and there in an update is one thing. Knowingly releasing a subpar product, one that completely replaces a product that was completely functional, with the intentions of fixing it later is something else entirely.

Apple and it's fans supposedly prides themselves on releasing the best, most functional, and easiest to use products on the market. What's really funny is that when they fall short of that goal, you see this huge but-but-but parade filled with some of the lamest excuses you've ever seen in your entire life being bandied about.

If you really want to know how bad Apple maps is, do this little thought experiment. Imagine the situation were reversed. Apple had the good maps, with Google's alternative being rather mediocre in comparison. Would you tell all those Android fans to wait a couple of weeks? That'd it be at least as good as what Apple in a short amount of time? Would you make the same excuses for them?

...or would you scoff at the idea and abuse the rolly eye emote? Saying it's stupid for Google to pull such a bone headed move.

Sorry, wasn't implying you were one of them. Guess my wink was misleading.

I actually really appreciate this back and forth. And you're making some absolutely valid arguments, hands down. Hell, I worked at Apple for 2 years. Don't get me started on that bag of mixed emotions. I went from a solid Apple-lover to a having the veiled pulled from my eyes and now I'm just jaded at ALL companies, but that's an entirely different thread.

Why I even registered on here, first time but years of site visiting, is that I don't understand how this has been blown to the point that people are talking about a Map app. Stolen iPhones, Antenna-gate...all of that is great entertainment. But a Map app...Geez, that just gets to me. You (meaning everyone, in HORDES) HAVE spent and continue to spend lots of $$ yet all they can do is bitch. It's just sad, I suppose.

I'll end my rant soon but why people are so damn upset about a FREE map app is just silly. I mean there's GPS systems, other apps on the market, there's still Google Maps, MapQUest, all these websites dedicated to helping you find your way...but no. If it's not there the SECOND someone needs it or it's NOT 100% perfect then it's tears and boo-hoos. Babies if we don't get exactly what WE want.

Damn. This is how far culturally we've fallen. Point made. End rant.

Yeah, it's pretty fun. Don't get me wrong here, I still like Apple stuff. Generally. I'm not, like, in love with them, but they're pretty decent. It's just that...eh...this is easily the worst move they've ever made to me, and they didn't even have any good reasons for doing so. It was a good thing for the company, but not for their customers.

I'm gonna guess you probably don't use maps all that much. I do, which is why I'm being so whiny about it. I don't want to have to send Apple an update because their maps led me somewhere entirely wrong. I just want to get where I want to go. Doing any more. No, being forced to do anymore, is laziness and bad judgement on their part. I've been left hanging, and all I can do is send updates, hoping that sooner or later the problem will be fixed. Or Google releases their map app, which will only solve half the problem, since I can't set a default app in iOS.

And speaking of that, the whole maps debacle really does show the weaknesses in Apple's simple walled garden approach. We're all relying on them to provide us with functional default apps. When they do, it's fine. Everything's hunky dory. When they don't...well...we're all screwed. You're locked in, unable to do anything about it cept hope Apple fixes the problem, or going ahead and jailbreaking.

Anyway...

We're looking at it from different perspectives. You think of it as an issue with a free app. I see it as my expensive computerized smart device not performing one of the functions I initially bought it for. If we were talking about Angry Birds or something, I might concede your point. But we're not. We're talking about a tool used by millions of people that suddenly no longer works.

Anyway, I'd like to go on, but I gotta get up and head out early tomorrow. Gotta allow myself some extra time in case I get lost using Apple's maps. :p

OH! AND HE LEAVES THE RING WITH A CHEAP PUNCH BELOW THE BELT!
