How was Google being "evil" ?

Did you not read the article? Google has been abducting puppies from iPhone owners, which it finds when the user used the Maps app to go to any pet-related store. It's like you're not even paying attention!

My bad. I never did well with MacRumor Article subtext ;)

Don't be evil... right...

Google will give away anything for free (including other peoples intellectual property) as long it drives their ad sales (which turn-by-turn navigation on iOS don't).

I don't mind companies making profits, but please don't think Google is somehow better than all the other companies out there.

And Apple is not better either.

Just for completeness sake.

The whole maps situation is purely idiotic, and their customers are suffering because of their stupidity.

People are suffering? ... over two companies fighting over taking your money ... through a maps app .... on $300+ devices ... with $100+ monthy service contracts.

That's pathetic as hell then if you care THAT much. Brainwashing goes both ways.

OTK

The problem is the end user, the consumer could give a %^* less about the politics of it all. They just want a map app that doesn't suck. And right now for many users the new map app is worse than what it replaced. All the behind the scenes BS between Apple and Google means nothing to them. I think Jean Louis Gassee had it right when he said Apple should have under promised and over delivered and they did the opposite. I'm not one who believes in the "Steve would never have..." nonsense but I do think he might have introduced maps differently and not oversold it.

That's right. Steve wasn't one to use words like "magical" unless there was real magic involved. I heard the devil wanted Steve's soul in return for inventing the iPhone, but Steve managed to negotiate him down to just a liver. True story.

How was Google being "evil" ?

Google was seeking more ways to turn iOS users into a product to be sold to the highest bidder.

iOS users want great products. They don't want to be products. Might work great for cattle, but people, not so much.

You think you aren't a product with Apple? Good luck with that. And they weren't LOOKING for anything. Apple was looking for turn by turn functionality. And if they wanted it - they had to agree to Google's terms.

It's not evil. It's called business. Just like Apple negotiates with other parties when they want patents, etc.

You still didn't explain how Google was evil in this scenario. Unless you only deal in hyperbole.

Yet your usage data, placement and what you do is what will make Apple Maps happen - IOS users should get out more...

Exactly.

Crappy unchecked map data = crappy maps

Well that makes me feel a little bit better about the crappy map data. I'd rather have turn-by-turn.

The data can be swapped out and fixed fairly quick. If they have the will to do so.

It totally amazes me that they used the unchecked geo-coded Yelp data. Somebody geo-coded that data to some really bad street center-line address files. Points are on the wrong side of the street which means street arc directions were not fixed. They probably used Tiger data... LOL

And it totally blows me away that Google and Apple hire slaves in India to do the map edit work, when we have a zillion gis mapping professionals out of work here. They HATE U.S. workers and are VERY happy with crappy data and a horrid product and a small bill. We did full QA checks at the digital map company I used to work at. This is what happens when you outsource the data to a company that outsources it's creation. You get crap! I can smell outsourced map data before I see it and this stuff smells of India.

It is easy to fix if you actually check it before dumping the layers in your map database. I just love Apples mañana attitude. We will have the users fix it with their corrections. WTF??? Not me. You guys got billions, you fix it. The good map data only cost a couple million. How cheap are you? And everyone will run back to Google Maps ASAP if you guys slack on the fixes. It only is lost map look-up ad revenue in the billions right? Nothing to cry about.

Steve Jobs is spinning right now, but he was also a cheap and greedy outsourcing clown.

iOS users are products. Apple products.

This is pretty much what I figured-- Apple got tired of Google dragging their feet and bumped them. Good for Apple. Now we'll suddenly get a Google Maps app with turn by turn, 3D imagery and all the other features we should have had at least a year ago.

Explain how Google was dragging its feet?

Did you read the article? Google offered the latest and greatest features but Apple was unwilling to accept their terms. How does that equate to Google dragging its feet?

Apple doesn't like it when they can't call all the shots. They like to be the bully and not compromise. So now the loyalists are stuck with an inferior map app. But at least they can brag about Apple not caving to Google. And to many, that is what is most important.

Destroying the entire Maps app to add turn by turn ... also known as 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'.

And that makes me angrier that major markets in which people don't care for turn-by-turn directions (such as Japan) have lost the best mapping service out there and ended up with the sh*tiest maps ever because of a "feature" they don't need.

Indeed. How "insane" for Google not to bend over and just let Apple dictate all the terms in their favor. You know - in exchange for services THEY needed.

Map companies

+1

Apple had a year to go on contract with Google anyway, why realease their own at such an early stage?

During "this one year left", Apple can be doing what they need to do, "behind closed doors"... Perfecting their own maps app and other Siri-related stuff. While, Google's maps data still worked on IOS

Then when the ne year is up, tmee to update and bring Apples Maps to everyone.. Im not saying hold off on IO 6 by any means... But Apple's Map app should of been a seperate udate. Not ready for 'prime time'

Less fuss.... And Apple knew it

Early stage?

They bought the three map companies years ago... C3, Poly9, and Placebase.

If this is the case why -at least in some major markets- are iOS 6 users stuck with one the worse maps I've ever seen in the last 15 years?

It's Apple problem, not the customers to suffer an substandard product

That's all nice scuttlebutt, but as a customer that pays top dollar for Apple's products, I don't give a rat's ass about their scobbling with business partners! I expect above standard solutions for the Apple prices I am paying.

Yeesh, if Apple would make a search engine, these forums would be full to the brim of people claiming that they're 'so happy' to use Apple's new (and buggy and bad) search engine... and in only a few months it will be better than Google!

Reality check people.

Apple is good at many things, this just isn't one of them. Even though Google may or may not have held back on the turn-by-turn, Apple let the maps app linger, did not add features other than turn-by-turn, did not make better use of the data already provided.

It became stale and boring because of Apple.
