So, apples reasoning of ditching Google Maps was becase they wouldn't include "Turn-by-Turn navigation"?

Is that all? You gotta be joking?

Apple must REALLY want Turn-Turn

I think map data is much more important than a simple Siri response...

People actually want to know where their going...thats more important.

Otherwise, people woud just use altenatives... I could really never understandcall that fuss anyway

People demanded turn by turn. Also Android keeps using lack of feature to poke fun of Apple.
Finally Apple said F u. We don't need you and will build our own.

that saw Apple replace its Google-powered Maps app for iOS with its own solution

It isn't much of a "solution" if you can't rely on the crappy thing.

so sum it up what Apple wanted was navigation but was not willing to give anything in return. Sorry Apple you want stuff you have to pay for it.

And who can blame Google for not wanting greater control. The map app sucked plane and simple and it was Apple job to updated. Something they failed to do.

Perhaps the issue here is that Google wanted too much in return? Apple is willing to invest in a mapping company and risk all this backlash just to create their own maps. That speaks volumes about the stakes in this battle.

I think that Apple is becoming too big, and that is just Creating too much concern in its competitors. Who knows if they may just cut Apple off in the future? Apple is just being preemptive here.

I ultimately believe that Apple still made the right choice.

Great reasoning. In the long run, I am confident the world's most valuable company will hammer out a solid map App. People need to give the same time they did to Google with its map development. I remember plenty of errors in their maps. I would rather suffer the growing pains than suffer Google branding all over my maps. Apple has demonstrated software competence in its OS and many a software application. It will happen.

Just saying: The app is fine. The map data is probably not perfect (I haven't found any bummers personally, but surely there will be some), and some of the satellite data is rubbish.

In my case, I can see my car and my neighbour's car parked on the satellite photo. My iPad, relying on WiFi, gets its location within about 10 meters. Then I checked driving instructions to my previous home. The driving instructions are perfect. The satellite image in the area of my previous home have about one pixel covering my old home and my previous neighbour's home

Google Branding

Does anyone recall the shirts of the future in Idiocracy with advertising completely covering them? I believe this is our Google-inspired ad-driven future. Get used to it!

I'm only partially kidding ;)

Easy solution:

Use TomTom navigation. Works flawlessly. Turn by turn, up to date maps.

Apple need to work more on the important things like battery life, and proper mail client operation. Discovered another problem where I get failed send operations in nn Exchange Server account. This never happened before upgrade to iOS6.

Forget maps. Get the other stuff working.

.

Competition is good and this is only the beginning.

Yes, taking a leaf out of apple's playbook, I'm going into direct competition with Starbucks.

We'll just serve hot water in a really nifty cup and tell people we've planted some coffee beans.

That should keep customers coming back for more. I'm going to make a fortune...

3 Word's Iphone Car Integration.

Apple has some major auto dealers lining up for this feature and they probably need turn by turn now since they said within a year this option would be in a lot of great brands ?

Ok... I agree here, but arn't map data more important? Second would be Turn-By-Turn

Its great to have siri, but don't u think reliable maps to back me up

Besides, people can just you TomTom with Turn-by-Turn... I see no dig del.

I thought Apple was all about "making the best products",, why should Apple give a hoot about what Android phones are doing?

I don't want my phone slowly turning into an Android. Thank god that Apple pulled away to do things their way. Apple map looks a lot sexier and cleaner than google maps. Give it time and I am sure it will be a lot better. Turn by turn navigation works really well for me and the way apple implemented into iOS is drop dead gorgeous. Doesn't feel cheap and bloated like other other phones.

Yeah, you are right, apple did the right thing. The new maps app is a lot sexier and cleaner. By the way, so sexier and cleaner that we don't have any street in our town, and the McDonald's is under the water.

As has become the new normal when it comes to Apple, the knee jerk ranting and raving gets up a head of steam only to be followed by more rational thinking and reporting. The fact that MacRumors is completely infested with Apple hating trolls and bullheaded nerds who think they know everything just adds to the hysteria.

Same thing with "scuff gate" an everyone who's now an expert on manufacturing and anodized aluminum, and all their easy fixes that guys whi make millions ad who've been doing this for years apparently are too stupid to think of.

Oh dam... How can i order that cheeseburger...

Well now is the time for Google to create a kick-ass Map app w/voice navigation for the iPhone. It should let users download map data. They should charge customers for this.

This isn't a religion. There are real people working to deliver you the best product they can on both sides.

Don't you know apple is a religion for some? I'm surprised they don't have churches.

We just got to have faith that apple will fix the crappy maps whether it takes 2 months or 2 years. Don't go astray and become a infidel like those android users.

All kidding aside people really need to stop this brand loyalty. If something is crappy admit it. Dont defend it. You are getting nothing out of defending them while they are getting your monies.

Google Maps have errors too

Nobody seems to say or know that Google Maps have a lot of mistakes as well
I used last summer in Europe and we got lost few times: small town don't even exist and /or are confused with others.
I guess is a common problem.. and BTW I love the turn by turn, it even works off line if you load the map before using it on the road.
Probably the errors for small places are a common issue for every similar app.

Doesn't that statement say that people were actually happy with the Google maps, if they never would have tried Apple's maps? Forcing us to use something crappier so they can get user data in the form of complaints doesn't seem very "user friendly" to me!

As stated in other threads, this is the direction apple is going. You, I, all of us had a choice. I'm comfortable with where apple and the iPhone are going so far. So you may not like it but you do have other options that you can exercise. I'm staying put.

Where do you live? Maybe you could provide more information like the actual address of the McDonald's that is under water. Maybe someone in your area could verify the information.

The reason I ask is that I had a couple problems that appeared to be map data errors but they were not. After having the problem I called my son and ask that he do the same thing and he did not have the problem. I later check my phone again and it was fine. This has happened to me twice. Not absolutely sure why it failed the first time but I do not believe it was bad map data or it would fail every time. I would just like to review some of the actual complaints first hand. Maybe they are errors not related to map data but with the software. Which could be easy to fix.

I will be interested to see how many people post the actual addresses for verification or simply like to just make noise.....

It isn't much of a "solution" if you can't rely on the crappy thing.

But unfortunately without a new maps app, iOS6 brings nothing new to the table barring Siri being slightly less horrible and passbook, which has all of 4 apps available in the UK app store.

At least before this whole debacle, at least iPhone users knew that if they wanted turn-by-turn, they needed an app for that. Now Apple tells them that they already have an app for that, but neglect for most of the world, it's unfit for purpose.

I'm all for companies, making mistakes like Google too.

But you 'use the tool thats right for the job'...

And if Apple maps don't cut it, because Siri was a priority, then i'm going elsewhere.

Even though people may rely on Siri, question is, why are those people Still growning over lack of map data then, when there are other choices available?

Apple lovers.... "I'll use Apple, even if i must suffer"

Or what....

So now we have turn by turn... except the data is innacurate. What good is navigation if the maps its navigating can't get you anywhere ? ;)

----------

OK now this is getting ridiculous. Headline on ZDNet:

How long will it be before iOS 6 Maps kills someone?

That's going a bit far. I'm pretty sure anyone sane would simply not follow turn-by-turn directions if they were leading him off a cliff... He'll just be pissed his new phone's navigation is borked.

I think it will boil down to the point when Google offers its Maps on AppStore, with turn by turn voice navigation.
You know ... Just for the lulz. In :apple: face !! [You need us anyway]

Because Apple is many things, but they just can't build Maps just as well as Google. Not even a decent Youtube app before Google did.
