That’s ambitious, given the non-updates, pricing and general expectation ramping up for the 2020 iPhone.

The market is so saturated and I am sure there is a surplus stock of existing models that haven’t been sold going into the new production. With 5G version coming next year, unless your phone is too old, lost, broken, I hardly see any reason to upgrade unless you are YouTuber, OCD about collecting all versions of the iPhone to add to your collection.

If it’s a great upgrade and if you can afford it, why not?

Don’t really care that much about 5g, at least this year. Maybe 5g will get better next year, or most likely the year after that.

If prices stay the same as last year or go up this will be the first iPhone ever that I won’t be purchasing.

Price has to come down to a normal level. The fact the iPhone price is the same as a laptop is ridiculous.

Kinda of hope sales plummet drastically to show Tim Cook we aren’t going to be mugs anymore.

I'm not defending Apple's high iPhone pricing, but when it comes right down to it, an iPhone can do easily do more than a laptop can in terms of versatility, so Apple can claim an iPhone should cost as much as an (Apple) laptop. I doubt iPhone prices are going to come down very much so it will be all Android smartphones grabbing increasing market share.

I wanted to upgrade my good old iPhone 7 but I will have to wait another year it seems. I have a strong feeling that someone at the iPhone department is going to get fired this year for struggling to sell at least 60% of the budgeted number of phones...

Reckon I’ll be sticking with my 8 Plus for the time being, but I’m still excited for the reveal of the new phones. I think most folk will quickly become accustomed to the square camera array. In fact most probably won’t even care in the first place.

Tech forum types just enjoy having something to froth about :D

People react like that every year, and still the sales grows (unless they rise the price).

Complaints, complaints, complaints then buy... if only people spoke less with theyr mouth / keyboard and more with their wallet....

I purchased the new iPhone every year until last year when I purchased it and then returned it. It just isn't worth Apple's sky high prices. Now I plan to stick with my iPhone X until it dies.

Apple could change my mind by lowering their prices, or by offering features that make their new phones fundamentally more useful, but it doesn't sound like either will happen this year.

These are the next generation?!!! Well iPhone, it was a good relationship but, as any other relationship ours has come to an end.

For the first time in many years, unless they really impress me, think I may skip this one and wait for the 2020 model.

But who looks at the back of their phone all the time? You spend 99.9% of the time looking at the front. No doubt it will be an excellent quality camera.

When you use a phone, everyone else can see the back of your phone. If I spend $1000+ for my phone, I hope my phone looks great in other people's eyes.

Would you be saying the same if it wasn't an Apple phone?

Are we expectinng less because it has an Apple on the back?

In a car you basically only see the interior (who looks the exterior all the time!!), you still pick the one you like outside don't you?

Valid argument. I was mentioning before in another thread, you only have those who focus on every aesthetic design cue on the iPhone on sites like this, consumers buy phones with what they need in mind, not based on that ‘camera looks ugly’. If the iPhone tri-Lens camera delivers beyond most expectations in terms of results, that’s what sells a phone, not the shape of a design with a camera that’s covered by a case by 99% of consumers.

For me 5G will be the next major upgrade. I'm on a 7 plus right now and I wouldn't upgrade if the next phone doesn't have 5G (especially since they've been saying that the next iOS upgrade will make the phone faster). If they don't release 5G in 2019, it wouldn't make sense to upgrade only to have the very next release make your existing phone obsolete.

Sounds a bit optimistic but we will see. This time you actually get a newish phone - compared to the X to XS transistion. This might help Apple a bit.

Total crap. Apple will never sell more than about 40M iPhones per quarter in this saturated smartphone market and with such outrageous iPhone prices. The only consumers buying smartphones in quantity will be in India and Africa but they'll be paying around $100 to $200 which leaves the iPhone out in the cold. Apple could have killed the competition but chose high profits instead of growing a bit more market share percentage. Apple has pretty much surrendered the iPhone business to Android smartphone manufacturers.
You forgot that there are still plenty of iPhone 5s, 6, SE, and 6s users who are probably looking for an upgrade this year.

And don't underestimate emerging markets. Sure, majority of the population will opt for $100 phones as that's the genera purchasing power, but there are plenty of rich people in those markets as well who want iPhones. What Apple imo need to work harder is to support in those region. I mean heck, the News app itself is not available in many markets, which is hurting Apple's aim to provide services to their customers. Take SE Asia. Apple was late and Samsung has taken over the general brand mindset, but Apple is trying now with more stores and app support.

You don't see louis vuitton or Hermes trying to gain marketshare nor selling cheap stuff. Yet they have outlets in the emerging markets as well.

Apple is not targeting Xs users. Apple is targeting the 5s/6/6s/7 users. This is why we have yearly incremental upgrades. Apple is not looking at those who just purchased their phones last year. Those people will be served by the 2020 iPhones. It's been like this since the 3GS.

They are selling more iPhone 8s than XS or XS Max, that shows how much people care about their "innovations".
For 90% of the buyers they are simply buying an iPhone. For the most reasonable price they can find.
Of course, it does probably matter that the new models are getting uglier every year ;)

Although I agree with you assessment (of people and their buying habits), you have no way of substantiating your clam of "selling more iPhone 8s than XS or XS Max" since Apple isn't providing unit numbers anymore.

So glad they canceled VR headset for.....this.

They canceled the VR headset because it was ruining people's vision.

Yeah and I’m excited to see if they base a new SE of the iPhone 6/ 8 design! That will sell better for its looks let alone price!

I couldn't care less what other people think of my phone,as long as I like it.Anyway, most other iPhone users will like it.I wouldn't worry what Android users think.
