...2019 is looking to be the most meh release in iPhone history if we can believe the rumors. If they're correct, my bet is most 2019 iPhone buyers will be those who have to replace an iPhone that no longer works or is on its last leg

Why is that such a problem though? It’s not like anyone is forcing people to buy a new phone every year.

This isn’t aimed at you necessarily, but I do chuckle at how some folk seem offended that there isn’t a massive quantum leap in iPhone technology every single year, year in year out. People who are happy with their current device can keep it. People who want or need something new can decide for themselves whether or not to buy the latest and greatest. It’s pretty simple. The general entitlement that people feel these days is quite curious.

They are selling more iPhone 8s than XS or XS Max, that shows how much people care about their "innovations". For 90% of the buyers they are simply buying an iPhone. For the most reasonable price they can find.
Of course, it does probably matter that the new models are getting uglier every year ;)
But XR outsells XS, XS Max, 8 and 8 Plus, combined.

I do not know what you mean with "speaking more with their wallets" that seems very cynical and inappropriate, I am a tech fanatic and I understand many people cannot justify paying more than $1100 dollars (after tax) for a phone with few enticing features, there is nothing wrong with that.
Yep you do not know what i mean.

As in instead of bashing the phone, speak with your wallet and DO NOT BUY IT. (let your purchase / money do the talking....to Apple)
I was not judging people (i look at people for what they are no for what they buy), i leave that to others.

I like the new camera design. It’s not amazing but it looks unusual, interesting and kind of elegant. It looks better than if 3 cameras were placed in a row.

This render is more accurate:

35M * 0.6 in the July-Sept Qtr + 55M * 0.6 in the Oct-Dec Qtr = 21M + 33M = 54M 2019 iPhones across the two Intro Qtrs !

The 2nd-Gen XS & XS Max will most-likely both flop.

The 2nd-Gen XR has "potential" ... assumes Apple fixed the A12's Perf Controller bug, & added "at-least" an additional GB of DRAM !

BTW, ~36M iPhones units will be older iPhones across the two Qtrs.

Apple "may" be on-course for ~170M units per year for several years.

They clearly over-played their hand when they released the XS & XS Max.

The 1st-Gen XR does NOT offer very good performance ! ... that's its main weakness ! ... hopefully Apple fixes the problems, but when the top three guys at the company (Cook, Schiller, & Williams) have NO Hardware OR Software Experience, expectations should be tempered (SIGNIFICANTLY) !

5G won’t thrive in 2020. I will wait until 2025 to see how good 5G truly is.
Pretty much the same here, I am most of the time connected to Wireless anyway. For the rare occasions where I am bored for probably 10 minutes, LTE seems to do just fine. I do see a lot of people watching videos on the bus, so, there is a market for the fast Internet and of course reducing congestion. I have been to a few soccer games (packed stadium) and my friend is always Facebook live some of it, but it seems to do just fine on LTE.

Tick-Tock cycle is over folks! We won't be getting a redesigned iPhone this year, unfortunately. More of iPhone X design...Apple is literally "phoning" this one home...

The success of the XR should tell Apple where the sweet spot is. Sales of the XS and XS Max are pretty poor, and the primary reason is price/value. Maybe they will tweak their price structure to something more like $699, $849, and $999 for their new phones.

Apple needs to give average customers incentive to upgrade every 2-3 years. Capability and features have plateaued and are a shrinking reason for an existing iPhone owner to upgrade.

I got an XR this year, so I’m good until at least 2020. Apple’s challenge is to give me a reason to get a new device then rather than hold on to the XR until 2021 or even 2022.

iOS is nowhere near as good as MacOS.

Technology prices should generally always decrease year on year not increase, as production/manufacturing etc gets more efficient. So in theory the iPhones this year should decrease in price since they are more or less identical bar a processor bump and an extra camera.

I really hope sales drop by like 20 million. It’s time they were kicked into touch.

I can see that you have never had to deal with increasing design costs, labor costs, machining costs, raw material costs, overhead costs, marketing costs, distribution costs, legal and regulatory costs, and all the other stuff that goes into making and selling a product.

If you are simply making the identical device every single year, perhaps (big maybe), a price might decrease. "More or less identical" covers an ocean of change, and it doesn't make cars cheaper every year, does it? Why would phones be different?

When you use a phone, everyone else can see the back of your phone. If I spend $1000+ for my phone, I hope my phone looks great in other people's eyes.
You are putting your attention to wrong thing. Maybe your outfit is more important than a phone looks like.

I deal with that on a daily basis but Apple are in a totally different league. If their R&D for each iPhone and material sourcing were to amount to £2b, then they make an enormous profit based off the 60+% markup on each iPhone sold. Apple pass a huge part onto the consumer and its shifted slightly as prices have gone higher. The cheaper models are more popular than the flagships which suggest most people aren’t up for paying a grand for a smartphone. Maybe it is time they looked into this or had a bit of a sharp shock?

I personally still a fan of iPhone 6s Plus ....I can't bear to have these new"ugly" looking phones ... but if Apple wants a 3-camera system, there is nothing more you can do to that..

Apart from not having one. (Suppose that wasn't an option.)

I wanted to upgrade my good old iPhone 7 but I will have to wait another year it seems. I have a strong feeling that someone at the iPhone department is going to get fired this year for struggling to sell at least 60% of the budgeted number of phones...

How much do you pay to keep the antique iPhone 7 cellular plan for another year? I'm guessing $500 - $1200.

iPhone 7 is pretty darn old now. Great phones, but count how many hours you spend using your phone daily - I think our iPhones are essential these days. I think you can get a free iPhone 8 at least or a free iPhone X with a cellular service plan right?

I mean iPhone 5 was a great phone too - but wouldn't it be a waste of money to pay for the cellular service plan on an iPhone 5?

I couldn't care less what other people think of my phone,as long as I like it.Anyway, most other iPhone users will like it.I wouldn't worry what Android users think.

Yes, and all the phones look the same anyways. I think the idea of a status symbol phone is a bit old and boring. Every human being practically on the planet has a phone of some sort.

It's like getting excited about a pair of sunglasses to me.

Yes for sure I want the latest and greatest - but it's mainly because I probably cannot function in the world these days without my iPhone.

That's why Warren Buffet says the iPhone is cheap - even at $1000.00+

Yes, it's not like aestethics and design used to be a main part of the brand, right?

But suddenly it's irrelevant when Apple is falling behind.

As long as the part that you look at is aesthetically pleasing and well designed, then I'm happy. The look of the back of my phone doesn't concern me in the slightest.

Yeah, good luck with that. Would like a phone with USB-C charging but I've got an Xr with the charging cable and Anker charger I got aftermarket.

Ol' Timmy is running that supply chain all right. Direct for an iceberg...

And the squeeze every dime out of 'em attitude is just killing them word of mouth. Friend of mine just bought a blazing fast Dell Windows 10 15" machine for about $360.

That's quite a premium for thinking different and OSX. Especially when I get better customer service at the local Chevrolet dealer's service department. That's not hyperbole either. Guess everyone's gravy train hits the skids sooner or later....

So your car can be a toilet seat with a great cockpit and you could not care because you only look at the gauges, wheel and the road? :p

No, my phone can have whatever design on the back and it won't bother me because I don't look at it.
