I can never keep track if 6 is a Samsung or Apple product, Same with 7.

SE or whatever, as long as they dumb down the internals. Some of us want small smart phones that are just, well, phones.
Then why buy an iPhone? There are plenty of phones that fit your needs. Seriously, I don't understand this. Is it just a matter of having an Apple branded phone? o_O

On a side note I guess they could call it the iPhone Air. :D

How did they come up with these absurd names? I almost going to believe first time users or that beginners is going to think the next upcoming generation is iPhone 6-air-macpro-c-plus-regular-abc123.

Well it did not shine through, but of course I know the difference, it is just that since Samsung is copying the numbers its time for Apple to get away from the numbers.

What a ridiculous statement, you're making it sound like Apple or Samsung were the first companies to increment their products with numbers

I will likely replace my iPhone 6 with this. I miss and prefer the 4" form factor. But 2GB RAM, please, and for the love of god, get rid of the protruding camera.

Apple Experience....A complete integrated environment. Change the phone you disrupt the integrated environment.

The line needs simplifying. How about iPad Pro iPad and iPad mini. iPhone plus, iPhone and iPhone mini? That is so much simpler. I think the numbers will stay though because it sells phones when you increase the number. But SE just doesn't fit
I've been thinking this same thing for years.

The fewer of the "new" features they include, the less compelling it is to upgrade from my current 5S. ApplePay? They want people to use it . . . they're getting the value from it, not me.

Apple is the only entity getting value from Pay!? Sorry but I have to completely disagree here. I wanted the Watch specifically to gain access to Pay. That is the ONLY reason I want to upgrade my 5S.

I couldn't care less about 3D Touch. I'm perfectly happy with the way I interface with my iPhone now, I've played around with it at the Store, and it does nothing for me. Developers haven't really embraced it to do anything spectacular in the apps I use yet, though I can certainly see the potential for it down the road. For now, I don't care. But give me Pay, a better camera, and more RAM, and I'm in. Can't happen soon enough!

Besides based on prossesors like G4, I don't recall Apple products that were numbered until the iPhone/iPad except Apple II and other stuff that was before Steve came back.
I agree that numbering can be used to promote newer models, but losing numbering would definitely make model variations and release cycles more flexible.
But I guess it's about naming products that maximize profits, and with iPhone and iPad we've gotten too used to numbering, despite the fact that the iPad line naming is sort of confusing.

"Apple considering dropping the 5"

The 5 that doesn't even exist you mean? The 5 that someone put there in one rumour once and then it was taken as fact ever since?

with iPods or Macs, they used to just add a year alongside. this could work...though the iDevices have using "The New" a lot

I seem to recall when Jobs returned, he was pointing out there were some 30 models of Macs out there, and they cut it down to four. I'm ambivalent to SE. Someone else mentioned Mini, which I like better. I would imagine there's a negative connotation to offering an iPhone 5 when in a few months they'll be pushing an iPhone 7.

The two companies with what 95% of the market using the same numbers for the same products. Come on, surely your thinking is critical enough to see through that, even if you are a Samsung fanboy or fangirl.

iPhone Small Edition - another innovative break-through product from Apple - unter the lead of Tim Cook.

They just keep innovating and innovating... a new different form factor iPad, a new different form factor iPhone...what's next?
Well, maybe an iPod mini and then an iPod nano. Innovative break-through products from Apple - unter the lead of Steve Jobs.

How could it support Live Photos but no include 3D Touch? I haven't used that feature, but I was under the impression that the latter was how you activated the former.

Apple did lose a significant market share when it dropped the 5S size and form - may be Jobs had a point!

Six iPhones at home, only one 6S - the person with very large hands has it. As the oldest one, I prefer a larger screen - but 4" or 6" - the difference is minimal as one ages.

Personally, I don't care is they do or don't make a 4" phone, but I don't think apple lost market shares over not having the 5s.

No, they didn't invent increments, but they are copying the version number, though. And it's understandable ... they don't want their product to seem outdated or inferior to the competition. People really are that clueless.
