Given that no vaccine is available, and at soonest we’re looking at a year and a half, perhaps it’s a bit premature to tell people to get on with their lives.
No it's not. You have to get on with your life.

There is truth to that. However, if the mortality rate of COVID-19 is as high as some experts estimate, it could potentially kill many more people than the flu.

As an example, during the 2009 H1N1 epidemic, about 60 million people were infected in the US according to the CDC. If the number of infected grows to similar numbers for COVID-19 and the mortality rate is 2%, this means 1.2 million people could die in the US. For comparison, the flu kills about 30,000 people per year in the US.
If there are as many carriers as there would have to be to generate these community cases, expect the mortality rate to be far lower than 2%

the flu shot doesn’t protect you from much. I’ve never gotten one. I have many friends and relatives that have and they’re the ones who wind up getting the flu 🤷🏿‍♂️
This is the best argument for including a Covid19 vaccine in the flu shot. Exposes the hypocrisy.

The Flu vaccine is not perfect and varies in effectiveness each year but it saves lives. I highly doubt all your friends and relatives all get the actual flu each year, more likely they get colds and other viruses with just the odd case of flu.

Statistically all your friends and relatives that get the flu shot each year get the flu less than if they didn’t.

Everybody’s arguing about whether COVID-19 is a serious concern (it is), I’m just looking at that picture thinking how on earth are the shiny parts of those iPhones that are facing us... reflecting the bright blue thing THAT’S BEHIND THEM?!?!!!

This is the type of stories that I would be ok with shutting off commenting on.

People, have some common sense - if you believed China locked down 1 billion people for a month for some flu, either the Chinese are stupid of you are an arrogant idiot. Sure, cv19 is a relative to seasonal flu, but they are not the same. Take some time to ask the Chinese you know what really happened.

I'm also on an 5-year old iPhone 6s and was hoping to upgrade it in September or October with the new model. Not sure it's going to hold for the few extra months 😅

I’ve had no problem, because i get the flu shot.

If I couldn’t get flu shots then, yes, I would find that the yearly spread of the flu would be problematic for my family.

I was an example this year of getting the flu in spite of the flu shot. It was actually the first time I ever had the flu test too, so confirmed instead of just treating for the flu.

Though I suspect that the shot reduced the severity. Only bad for 2 1/2 days.

and What’s your point exactly? Just mansplaining? Obviously we CAN get the flu after getting a shot. But that isn’t really the point, is it?

and even if it’s not perfectly effective, I assume you know what herd immunity is?

i mean, really, what is your point here?

Show me the research you've done on this, only peer reviewed literature please. Let me guess...you haven't, but will weigh in anyway.

Really hoping the hysteria blows over soon. We need sensible hygiene and not panic. Once a vaccine is available, people need to take it and get on with their lives!
Vaccine?
Do we even have a vaccine for SARS or MERS yet? (SARS is old enough to sign up to serve the country already)

This is being blown all out of proportion, but maybe that's a good thing. Maybe people will start actually be more hygienic (cover their coughs and wash their hands), stay home when they're sick, and get the flu shot.
Maybe companies will start to think more seriously about allowing people to work from home, and maybe we won't spend so much money and environmental cost on flying people all over the world and find ways to use virtual reality for many of these purposes.

Probably not so much. This will likely blow over sooner than later, especially if this flu acts like other flus and becomes much less contagious with the higher humidity of the summer months.
Well this has highlighted how generally unhygienic people are. Since the outbreak I have seen several people being called out for leaving public bathrooms without washing their hands. I personally have seen this in the past (way too often) but have not said anything. I take my own precautions (don't touch doorknobs etc) but now I have joined the shaming crowd. I think people are under the mistaken impression that most people are hygienic. They are not and that is why this should be of some concern

The “people also get sick from the flu” argument is so tired and lazy. I guess I will expect to find those people running through cancer wards screaming “stop worrying people also die of AIDS!” Or the reverse.

The 5G network isn’t ready and won’t be useful for years at best anyway, unless your speaking about TMobile’s slower 5G lower frequency network. Only a few streets at best literally in Chicago that support fast 5G even now. On a good day your lucky to get a good 4G signal at times even and it travels even better.

Most of us could care less about a 5G iPhone for a while.

Have you had trouble getting on with life despite the flu killing hundreds of thousands of people every year? COVID-19 is shaping up to be a somewhat more severe and contagious flu. It's the unknown that people are afraid of, not a contagious respiratory illness.

There are also promising anti viral drugs. Science is the answer, and it should be prioritized!

I think you need some pare the mortality rates and get back to us. You will surely know 3-10 people that will die from this by end of year if you know 100+ people in your life.

No matter what happens, i walk like a woman, live like a woman, no corona or king kong virus will take away my spirit...so people should live their lives and not panic....if we die, we die like Men/women

People don’t seem to understand it’s not “like the flu, bro.”

This is something that will overwhelm the hospitals, regardless of where you live.

Italy went from “carry on with your daily lives, masks are useless” to “Mama Mia, how did this happen?!” in a matter of weeks.

And as of today closing the entire northern part if Italy, 16 million people are now under quarantine, although the planes and trains are still allowed in and out of the area??..

We saw this coming because if you followed Chinese economics in December you would know this. I bet iPhone 12 comes out November or December time frame.

5G needs a few years of $89.99 a month plans with exceedingly limited data caps while pushing reps to sell it as a replacement for landline internet. Once people realize it’s the same service they always had, and Cricket starts including it in their plans, than will it be sold at today’s prices.

I mean, masks are useless if you’re not regularly and directly exposed to people who are infected, though. And even for those who are — mostly doctors and nurses caring for infected patients — it’s far from a sure bet.

Not to say the present situation in Italy isn’t bad, because it is.

Well for better or worse, I have now fulfilled my bucket list of being an Apple stockholder. Not the way I wanted to of course. A girl who lives with me has a grandmother with the virus in Wuhan and my son's company in South San Francisco just confirmed a case and is closing down for two weeks.
This is the strangest time I can remember.

According to the CDC, 151k - 575k people died worldwide from H1N1 in 2009. I don’t remember having a conversation about this or witnessing the hysteria that I am with this. If people are this worked up after about 3k deaths — what happens if the death rate comes close to H1N1?

Everybody needs to relax and be smart about this. We need effective leaders to help us through this, and you can’t lead with panic.

Panic is a waste of energy — undue stress on yourself and others. Instead, look at the big picture and at previous modern outbreak stats for comparison. Virus outbreaks have become a fact of life. The best thing to do is prepare for them, not react to them with panic.

And for those frightened by quarantine measures — this is not unusual — there were mass quarantines happening in 2009 to control H1N1 as well. I would imagine the current measures being implemented are using those as a benchmark — in other words, the thought process might be to quarantine larger amounts of people to see if it makes a difference. Only time will tell.

As a previous post mentioned — there will be some good that will come out of this. Hopefully people will learn to keep a calm head in times of uncertainty, hygiene habits should improve, and there will be more startups popping up that address this (better masks, sanitizing products, etc.)

Don’t panic. Be safe, and be a good leader.

The vaccine won’t be available for another year or more. The reality is things will probably get worse before they get better. You see what’s happening in Italy with the lockdown situation escalating from a few towns to the entire region including Milan and Venice. I expect more cities/regions of Europe to be locked down and that may begin to happen in the US. France had 19 deaths the last time I checked and the US is up to 21. I hope it doesn’t get so bad, but what we want/hope for and what we ultimately get are often two different things.

It seems to be spreading nicely throughout those hot, humid climates in SE Asia right now.

I mean, is this much of a problem for consumers? Do we really need a new flagship phone released every single year?
