It will not be a small phone. Why?

1.) They would likely have more mid-sized phone components to recycle and re-sell
2.) I want to be proven wrong and delighted if they do announce a small phone

it’s why they jumped from 8 to 10. To leave room for the updated 8, called 9.

It's probably been the internal roadmap for 5+ years

If it turns out like the mockup, which has a stainless steel body on the sides, it’ll look good and up to date enough even though the bezel’s still huge. It will last at least for another 1-2 years before it looks outdated again.

small size, stainless steel band, and frosted back glass. Mmmm yummy. Wish it was smaller than the iphone 8.

I think they’re targeting folks like me who are still using an iPhone 6.
It’s still chugging along albeit very slowly these days and battery life is dwindling as well.

I’m not sure if this is enough to entice me. The price is nice, and in some ways a thick bezel top and bottom feels less offensive than a notch. It unapologetically bezeled. :) An A13 chip will mean it’s speedy. I’d rather it have 4gb instead of 3gb of RAM, but it should suffice.

I’ve held off on the 11 and X because price and frankly they don’t look very nice. Not that my 6 is going to win any beauty prizes either, but back then it was the only game in town. We’ll see...I have high hopes for the iPhone 12 as the one that will really turn heads.

Apple has a history of reusing (New) older iPhone parts/chassis, etc. Being this will be an ‘entry-level’ iPhone, undoubtedly that will probably be their next move. If they want to keep the cost low, they won’t include some of the latest technology in this phone, it really is about keeping the phone ‘affordable’ in a manageable size. I think consumers are more attracted to the price point than they are the latest technology.

I have both the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone SE... I'm constantly switching THE SIM back and forth and I tell ya..I'm hoping they keep it small and light. I don't want bigger and heavier.

It needs to have Qualcom or it's dead to me. iPhone 6s has 3 more bars at all times compared to iPhone 8. If Apple sticks that same **** Intel LTE chip into the iPhone 9.... MAy it REst in peace.

Then you might as well just throw in the towel now for Apple. I suspect that Qualcomm chips will be the one to rest in peace for all iPhones and iPads altogether once Apple ramps up its acquisition of Intel’s model business.

Hey Mark and Debbie, let's get an update on those coming iPad Pros please.

Dunno about the March iPhone SE2/8S/9, but the fall iPhones will likely all be Qualcomm.

Sure, of course. But those days are numbered I suspect. As for the SE, I wonder if Apple could possibly keep costs low by tapping into their acquired Intel assets now.

(Edited in several places.) One possible name for this phone is the "iPhone 8s" or even "iPhone 8se." The number "8" is a lucky number in China. (On edit: I agree with PickUrPoison that a non-generational name like iPhone SR is quite possible.)

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the base price for this model is US$399, but I tend to think Apple will hold the line at US$449, the current price of the iPhone 8. However, it's very possible they could do something like this:

Current Lineup

iPhone 8 (64GB): US$449
iPhone 8 (128GB): US$499
iPhone 8 Plus (64GB): US$549
iPhone 8 Plus (128GB): US$599
Colors: Space Gray, Silver, and Gold

New Early 2020 Lineup

iPhone 8s (32GB): US$399
iPhone 8s (128GB): US$479
iPhone 8 Plus: discontinued
Colors: Space Gray, Silver, and, for the 128GB variant only, (PRODUCT)Red
(Also, Apple might take this opportunity to drop the base price of the iPhone XR from US$599 to US$549 and reduce the color choices from 6 to 4. They might also add a couple iPhone 11 colors, notably blue which is currently missing.)

Storage Bumped Early 2021 Lineup

iPhone 8s (64GB): US$399
iPhone 8s (256GB): US$479
Colors: Space Gray, Silver, and (PRODUCT)Red for all variants

The iPhone 8s -- or whatever it's called -- really needs dual physical SIMs at least for China, Hong Kong, Macau, and India. The lack of dual physical SIMs in India is one of the many reasons Apple is getting clobbered in that country, and a US$399 entry price would help solve one of the other big problems.

This phone will be an A13/3GB RAM device, I agree. Maybe 4GB of RAM, but I don't think so. They'll use the 2019 processor to allow the option of a mid-life storage bump for a long running product, just as with the iPhone SE. The clock speed might be slightly reduced, e.g. from about 2.65 GHz to 2.5 GHz for the fast cores and from about 1.72 GHz to 1.62 GHz for the efficiency cores. Apple might remove wireless charging, will increase battery capacity and life, and probably will uprate the camera's capabilities slightly (e.g. add Portrait Mode like the XR has). Wi-Fi will remain the same, I expect (no Wi-Fi 6). Sadly there won't be a headphone jack ("courage"), but they may include the Lightning to 3.5mm audio adapter in the box in at least some markets. Or, better yet, maybe they'll introduce a US$9 Lightning to 3.5mm adapter that actually works (wired mute/volume up/volume down buttons work, and the adapter exposes a Lightning passthru port for charging). They may be able to uprate the water resistance from IP67 to IP68. But externally it'll be pretty much an iPhone 8, maybe slightly thicker for battery reasons.

I'm sure if they just go with one lens (and they almost certainly will) it would just be a standard 1x zoom wouldn't it, and not a wide angle or telephoto? Or were you referring to something else about the lens rather than its optics?
I agreed it will be a standard 1x zoom. I meant which other iPhone will it take its camera from? If it reuses the iPhone 8 camera, that's DOA for me. If it's the XR, ok... But I hope it's the same camera as the 11. The SE had the same camera as the 6s (flagship at the time), so here's hoping.

I don’t think there’s any chance of Apple calling this iPhone 8 “anything” or even 9. That would make it sound two or three years old already, even older when the iPhone 12 comes out this fall. Who wants to buy a three or four year old phone?

I think it’ll be a non-generational name, like the SE was. Something they can sell for a few years alongside newer, more expensive iPhones and not have it be perceived as older than dirt.

SE, XR and XS are out. My guess is SR, but it could be a lot of things. We’ll know soon 🙂
