Another parts bin phone from the 2014 iPhone 6 mould. They could have redefined what a small factor phone could be like, but no, that's too much of an investment for Tim.

The SE is not a good phone by today's stantards. I like it, I got it just for the looks and decent specs and for a good price (around 100$) but the screen is too small and I have to charge it like twice a day. Like many others I thought the smaller form factor would be great and it is, until you have to use it for stuff. Comparing it to my 6, the SE's screen felt like a downgrade out of the box. I like it, I'm glad to have bought it, but there's no case for this small form factor anymore.

I used someone's SE the other day... and my two thumbs basically covered the entire keyboard. I had such difficulty typing on it. And my thumbs aren't fat!

I know people love the tiny form-factor... but it's certainly not for me anymore.

I owned an iPhone 5S... then I jumped directly to a 6S Plus. I'll never go back! :p

History is going to repeat itself. In 2016, the 6S was introduced. The 5S (two generations old at this point) drops to ~$450. Then six months later the SE, a 5S with 6S internals, was introduced at $399 and the 5S discontinued.

...fast forward 4 years

11 is introduced, iPhone 8 (also two generations old) price drops to $449. Come March, I see this new "SE", a iPhone 8 with iPhone 11 internals (downsized to 3GB ram most likely), undoubtably at $399 price point with 64GB. Already too much pressure from competitors with better specs even at $399 so any higher will not make sense. As someone just mentioned, OLED screens are already quite prevalent in this price range.
Well, I don’t see how an improved 8—2GB increasing to 3GB, A11 replaced with A13, likely better cameras, etc.—is guaranteed a price cut.

Sure, I don’t think it’ll increase to $499, but I don’t think it undoubtedly gets introduced at $399. We’ll soon see 🙂

The iPhones are not expensive as it is, we don't need a cheeper one. I really hope this is a smaller and lighter phone for people that aren't 6 foot tall men.

I'm not sure about this.

Nobody wants a cheaper, smaller, less-capable iPhone. People want the best of Apple, and those iPhones are already on the market.

"Nobody" is a lot of people, many don't buy the latest and greatest because of the price, others it's because of the size (and then some more because of both). I don't need, nor will I ever buy, an 11 Pro no matter how nice it is - it's more expensive than my rent. I do want an iPhone tho, I prefer them over Android, so a cheap iPhone with a smaller LCD screen, less RAM, just TouchID and no FaceID, is fine by me.

It will probably be sold at 499 not 399
The A11 iPhone 8 currently cost $449. Updating the processor by two generations to an A13 and lowering the price at same time feels odd. It might replace the 8 at same price and then the price gets lowered 6 to 12 months in.

Still no news about the camera, but that’s to be expected. All rumors come from chinese blue-collar supply chain and there’s no way for them to know the software side of things. I guess dimensions and design is all we’ll know for sure right until the launch day. Which isn’t far at this point.

As for me, I will be very surprised if while having A13 it won’t support all the iPhone 11’s main camera capabilities. Would certainly be a deal breaker in that case.

That's right but even a $400 Android smartphones use an OLED screen with a higher amount of RAM THAN the least expensive iPhone.
Those that want that should buy it. Those who want iOS will buy Apple 🤷‍♂️

It’s rumored to be a single camera, so there is a hardware limitation. But yes, it will be interesting to see how good it will be.

The SE did not sell great. So few, it was cancelled.

In March 2016, the iPhone market was still in hype for larger screens.
The hype is over, and many are reminded that not everything big fits in your pocket.

Apple also needs the low-cost business in India and corresponding groups of buyers in China.

And soon Apple will need a low-cost transmitter for the upcoming AppleGlasses, to offer an attractive price for switchers. With Glasses you have an infinitely large display on your nose, so you don't need another huge display.

Please keep in mind: In 2016 the SE received top marks from the users...

Have to post again.

No idea why some people who prefer bigger phones don't want to allow a smaller phone for those who prefer smaller. It's not like it will mean the end of the bigger phones. Both lines can exist together side by side.

So much discussion and time spent on arguing what makes sense for Apple as a company. They don't actually listen to anyone, even their customers. Apple follows the "People don't know what they want unless you give it to them"

Let us all just rest our keyboards and wait for Apple to announce what they have decided humanity should have an option for.

This is going to be my dad's next iPhone in a couple of years when he'll upgrade his 6s. He still prefer TouchID and the home button, so I'm glad they'll make another phone with that form factor and a new SoC.

“People don't know what they want until you give it to them” applies when Apple enters a new product category. The first iPhone, for example. For updates to existing products, Apple does a ton of market research with both current and potential customers. They have a very good handle on what people want and how to improve their products.

re: smaller displays, it’s not Apple forcing customers into larger screens, it’s customers wanting larger screens, and Apple giving them what they want. Some people understand this, and some don’t.

You can’t get a 3.5” iPhone anymore, and not for many years. 4.0 discontinued since 2018. You can’t get an 11 or 12 inch laptop anymore, 13” is the smallest. 15 is discontinued for 16”. You can’t get a 9.7” budget iPad, or a 9.7 (or even 10.5”) iPad Pro anymore; those are 10.2” and 11.0” now. You can’t get a 38 or 42mm Watch anymore; they’re 40 and 44mm now. And there’s no 17” iMac; 21.5” is the smallest available.

Time and time again, Apple hears, well we like it a lot, but what we really want is a bigger screen. That’s the reality.

When products don’t sell very well, Apple discontinues them. When what you want becomes unpopular, watch out. Because it’s only a matter of time before it goes away.

That’s just business. You can’t expect Apple to keep a loser product around, devoting resources to it that could be better used elsewhere. 3.5” iPhones are gone, so are 4”. Someday maybe small might come back and Apple will be building 3” iPhones, who knows? 🤷‍♂️

Sure, but Android is Android, I've owned many different Android devices over the years, and I still prefer iOS - even if it's coupled with my lowly SE that's almost 4 years old.

The next cheapo iPhone model will be just right for me, without tons of RAM, without a fancy OLED screen, without blazing fast FaceID.

I know I can get "better" hardware with a ~$300 Samsung Asomething plastic phone, but I'm not interested personally.

It's the move they needed to make, the focus on services is only going to work if they can increase the market share of device owners to buy the services. But, it needs to be a device that people want to buy, not an over-priced, neutered device.

Apple sells the products that make them the most $. They make more $ selling larger more expensive phones than they do selling less expensive smaller phones. It has also been shown that people with larger phones spend more at the App Store. That doesn't mean that there isn't a demand for smaller phones or more people wouldn't chose smaller phones if given a viable choice. They also know that a large percentage of those people who would prefer a smaller phone will just give in and buy the larger model anyway. Apple also has a history of letting products stagnate, then claiming they are discontinued because people aren't buying them.

If the rumors of price and specs holds true, this is good starter phones for teens, older folks and those who don't need the bells and whistles. I'm waiting to see if Apple increased the base storage but I know it will most likely start at 64GB.

I’m not sure this new iPhone SE warrants a full event on its own given that there’s not a single new thing on it. It’s an old body with current (but not new) internals. So with that in mind I’m hoping this means that a March event will bring additional new hardware. Obvious guess goes to a 13 or 14 inch MBP but I’m really hoping that the iMac gets updated because that’s what I’m waiting to buy. The fact that I can spec a 16 inch laptop higher than a desktop is crazy. Surely it’s only a matter of time now with a new iMac with hopefully a new design as well. Thin bezels and no chin please apple.
I don't think Apple will have an event at all to announce, after all, Tim won't be able to say "This is the best iPhone EVER!". We can expect an announcement at the website and email of the new low-cost iPhone.
